DLF’s 2017 IDP Predictions: Fantasy MVP

Eric Olinger

At this time of year there is absolutely no shortage of fantasy football articles, information, metrics and ADP but it always comes back to one question: “who are you drafting/avoiding?” We get a lot of those kinds of tweets and questions. A lot!  Making those predictions are my favorite part of the preseason. If you have as many hits as you did misses, you did great, but nobody remembers the hits. Instead, you’ll be crucified for that one miss…and I love it. With all that in mind, I asked my DLF brethren to go out on a limb and give me their IDP predictions for 2017. We’ll undoubtedly have some of those hits and misses, so let’s get right to them. Today we’re focusing on the IDP Fantasy MVP.

Landon Collins, S NYG

He’s so far above the rest of the defensive backs it’s not really fair. He’s a game changer in the same way JJ Watt is among defensive ends. – Doug Green

Khalil Mack, EDGE OAK

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year will put up a career year in 2017. As an edge, he gets the tackles as he’s solid against the run, but anything less than 20 sacks this year would be a disappointment. Yes, that’s right. 20 sacks.– Brandon “Bee” Salamat

DeForest Buckner, DT SF

You’re aware by now that I value IDP-balanced scoring systems. DT1 is tops right now during the JJ Watt recovery period (weighted scoring). DeForest Buckner is that guy. –Bob Brannon

Landon Collins, S NYG

The easy choice is Watt, so let’s be slightly different and go with Collins. The Giant strong safety should see an incredibly similar year to his monster 2016. They’ve added nothing at all in front of him, and even lost some run stopping ability on the defensive line. –Adam Tzikas

JJ Watt, DE HOU

Jeremy Funk tells me he’s going to be fully fit again.  Even if he’s not, 80% of Watt is probably still the best edge rusher in football.  Any other player getting 20 sacks would be a huge, newsworthy year.  For Watt it would simply be business as usual. –Tom Kislingbury

JJ Watt, DE HOU

In his last two full seasons, Watt posted 154 tackles, 37.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and had 18 passes defended. There are legitimate concerns about his back and it’s hard to say just how he’ll hold up. However, I always love a good story and Watt returning to form after raising millions of dollars for his adopted hometown of Houston just seems too good to not happen. There may be a few players moving ahead of him in the dynasty rankings due to his injury concerns but his short-term production could be dominant and worthy of MVP status this season. Simply put, Watt is a man among boys. Blake Bortles may not be too thrilled he was anointed the Jacksonville starter after week one. – Ken Kelly

Danielle Hunter, DE MIN

I loves me the Danielle Hunter, or as I like to call him Danielle “The Bounty” Hunter. A lot of people were high on Hunter going into last year as their sleeper IDP pick, and boy did it pay off. He ended the year with 12.5 sacks as a rotational end in Mike Zimmer’s defense for the Vikings. He’ll now slide into the starting role opposite Everson Griffen with Brian Robison coming off the bench. Everyone is focusing their attention on JJ Watt and Joey Bosa, who surprisingly got zero votes for IDP MVP, but you can wait a round or two later and grab someone with somewhat similar upside. – Eric Olinger

There are a wide variety of players who could be considered for this award. JJ Watt is an obvious choice because of the dominance he’s showed in IDP leagues before. Landon Collins could provide a point differential at his position similar to what a healthy Rob Gronkowski can do for tight ends. Khalil Mack could be poised for a career year as he begins to put together a Hall of Fame-like resume early with the Raiders. DeForest Buckner could be the choice in a balanced IDP format. Danielle Hunter could give you Watt-like production at a fraction of the cost. Joey Bosa was a surprise omission but anyone in an IDP league could see him posting a monster, MVP-like season as well. In short, there are a variety of different choices for this award for just as many reasons and no runaway favorite.
