All About the Solo: Week Three
One of the most frustrating things in IDP leagues is seeing your stud linebacker fly all over the field on game days only to see the home score keeper dilute his performance by divvying up his tackles as assists. On the flip side, if your league doesn’t score solos and assists too differently, you’ll have a better idea of which teams hand out assists like candy. Not everyone knows this, but the NFL does not recognize a tackle as an official statistic. Tackles are scored by the home team’s official score keeper and those are the stats you see on the news and websites. The league made an effort to standardize what is and isn’t a solo tackle back in 2007 when they sent a video to all NFL teams, but it is still the discretion of the home score keeper. Even after this effort there is a still a large discrepancy from team to team and week-to-week. I will be tracking this throughout the season to give you a better idea of what to expect when choosing your IDPs each week.

Benardrick McKinney lands at the top of this week’s list thanks to the large double helping of LeGarrette Blount the Patriots decided to force down the Houston Texans’ throats. The big fella toted the rock 24 times for 105 yards and a couple of scores in clock killing mode which seemed to start before halftime. That game still amazes me and I don’t think anyone expected it to end so lopsided but it’s a reminder not to overlook the Patriots defense, led by Jamie Collins. In his own right, he was pretty amazing as well, racking up 14 total tackles and never letting Lamar Miller and the Texans get their ground game going. Bill Belicheck took away the ground game and forced Brock Osweiler to shoulder the load and it ended up a 27-0 shutout.
Paul Posluszny now has double digit tackles in back to back weeks and is playing all the defensive snaps. For the time being, Myles Jack appears to be no threat to Posluszny’s playing time as he has played 16 defensive snaps total this season, all in week two. Of course this could change as soon as the Jaguars’ season is officially in the tank and they move toward the future, something which could happen as soon as this week being 0-3. Zach Brown only played 60% of the snaps for Buffalo this week but maximized his opportunities by finishing with a team leading 12 tackles. On the flip side, Preston Brown played all 82 defensive snaps and finished with just five total tackles. Expect Preston Brown’s numbers to bounce back next week.
Jordan Poyer had his best game of the season with 13 tackles after back to back weeks with six. If he could start mixing in some big plays, sacks or interceptions, he could flirt with DB1 numbers but for now he’s a weekly mid-range DB2. Due to the injury to E.J. Gaines, Troy Hill has seen his playing time percentage increase from 0% to 66% to 96% for the Rams this year, culminating with an eye catching 11 tackles, all solo. He’s a player to make note of in case Gaines goes down again.
