Dynasty Scouts Conference Review: SEC and Big 12

With college football in full swing, we’ll be bringing you a review each and every week. These recaps will feature sections for “Premier Conference Performer,” “Rising Players,” “Falling Players,” and a special Freshman spotlight. These weekly reviews will keep you up-to-date on all the happenings in devy leagues and allow you to keep tabs on future dynasty league assets. By the time the NFL Draft rolls around, you won’t see too many strangers.

SEC

Premier Conference Performer

Alex Collins, RB Arkansas (Junior)

16 carries, 173 yards, five touchdowns, one catch, -6 yards vs. Tennessee-Martin

Collins has had an up-and-down season, but this one definitely falls in the up column. The five scores led the charge in a rout.

Rising Players

Ricardo Lewis, WR Auburn (Senior)

Four catches, 137 yards, one touchdown vs. Ole Miss

Lewis didn’t have a lot of catches, but he made up for it in yards in a loss. He has prototypical size at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, though he comes from a run-heavy Tigers system.

Kyler Murray, QB Texas A&M (Freshman)

20/28 223 yards, one touchdown, 20 carries, 156 yards, one touchdown vs. South Carolina

Making his first start, Murray flashed his potential both in the air and on the ground. He distributed the ball well and made good decisions. His future looks bright.

Josh Malone, WR Tennessee (Sophomore)

Four catches, 103 yards, one touchdown vs. Kentucky

He did most of his damage on a 75-yard catch. He’s a big-bodied receiver (6-foot-3, 197 pounds) and has made some solid strides this season.

Falling Players

Sony Michel, RB Georgia (Sophomore)

13 carries, 45 yards, two catches, 19 yards vs. Florida

When Nick Chubb went down, Georgia felt pretty good because of Michel. Since then though, Michel has struggled, culminating in Saturday’s stinker.

Pharoh Cooper, WR South Carolina (Junior)

Four catches, 22 yards, two carries, 16 yards vs. Texas A&M

When your yards per carry is higher than your yards per catch as a wideout, there’s an issue. Cooper is generally a do-it-all kind of guy but couldn’t get going this weekend.

Patrick Towles, QB Kentucky (Junior)

16/33 184 yards, one touchdown, one interception, nine carries, 20 yards, one touchdown vs. Tennessee

Towles has not had a great year and Saturday was another clunker. While he doesn’t have the greatest supporting cast, he should be playing better.

Freshman Spotlight

Antonio Callaway, WR Florida

Three catches, 110 yards, one touchdown vs. Georgia

He had over 30 yards a catch against a pretty good defense. The Gators look like they are for real this season.

 

BIG 12

Premier Conference Performer

James Washington, WR Oklahoma State (Sophomore)

Four catches, 200 yards, two touchdowns vs. Texas Tech

In a game that feature over 120 points, Washington was the highlight ringing up a yards per catch rate of 50, including one catch that went for 75 yards. The Cowboys now face No. 5 TCU  next week in a game with major playoff implications.

Rising Players

Trevone Boykin, QB TCU (Senior)

32/47 388 yards, three touchdowns, 11 carries, 84 yards, one touchdown vs. West Virginia

Boykin is one of the most exciting players on the college football scene. The Horned Frogs will need him to be at his best to close out the season if they want to stay in the playoff hunt.

Josh Doctson, WR TCU (Senior)

11 catches, 183 yards, two touchdowns, one carry, one yard vs. West Virginia

The apple of Boykin’s eye is Doctson, who is one of the steadiest wideouts on the college landscape. Doctson should be a an early-round draft pick in next year’s draft.

Sterling Shepard, WR Oklahoma (Senior)

11 catches, 183 yards, one touchdown vs. Kansas

The opponent might have been lackluster, but Shepard turned in his best day of the season in a rout.

Falling Players

Jerrod Heard, QB Texas (Freshman)

6/9 26 yards, one interception, nine carries, 13 yards vs. Iowa State

The Longhorns were shut out and Heard looked bad. He was replaced in the second half by Tyrone Swoopes, but he too did little to move the offense as they combined for a total of 85 yards passing.

Skyler Howard, QB West Virginia (Junior)

16/39 160 yards, one touchdown, one interception, 10 carries, 40 yards vs. TCU

The Mountaineers generally put up tons of offense, but Thursday against No. 5 TCU they simply couldn’t answer the bell. Howard is the one to make that team go and completing less than 50 percent of his passes will not get it done.

Taylor Cox, RB Kansas (Senior)

12 carries, 30 yards, one catch, eight yards vs. Oklahoma

The Jayhawks are not a good football team so it’s not all Cox’s fault. It’s tough to get running room when there is no threat of a passing game.

Freshman Spotlight

Mike Warren, RB Iowa State

32 carries, 157 yards, one touchdown, one catch, -3 yards vs. Texas

The Cyclones made a change at offensive coordinator and came to life. Warren looks to be the foundation piece to turning around fortunes in Ames.
