Friday Freeroll: Week One
As the season approaches, some of us lose the best part of our fantasy football season: the draft. Well, thanks to daily fantasy football leagues, we are able to draft a team every week and test ourselves against thousands of other players. The drafts take minutes, the lineups are easy, and the prizes can be huge
For those of you looking for advice on daily leagues, including those highlighted here, several of the DLF writers will be involved in daily fantasy articles (in addition to all the great dynasty content). Hopefully, they will give you a second way beyond dynasty to have some fun and win some money.
With a new season upon us, daily fantasy sites are reaching unprecedented heights in popularity and subsequently, the amount of cash prizes up for grabs. By testing out the waters via the various freerolls available, you can develop and try strategies before making that all-important first deposit.
On to the freerolls for week one and a few thoughts on the formats.
FanDuel.com – $1,000 NFL Freeroll
Last year, FanDuel would release a freeroll on Friday or Saturday every week. This year, there were advertisements about freerolls exclusive to recent depositors (in the last seven days) which may be in addition to the normal cadence. Usually, these contests have 50,000 to 60,000 entries with payouts to the top 1%. Check out some of the DLF articles that specifically focus on optimizing your FanDuel lineups.
Starsdraft.com – $1,000 NFL Freeroll
The newly acquired and rebranded Victiv has a slew of freerolls, many of which with various limitations on entry. There is an open freeroll with a limit of 10,000 entries that includes a lineup with two flex spots to give more options. It is half point per reception so be mindful when selecting your players.
Draftster.com – N/A
Currently, Draftster is not running any freerolls for week one but consistently ran a $500 to $1,000 freeroll for most of 2014. They do still use a kicker in this format but there is also a flex spot to vary the lineups more.
Draftkings.com – $100,000 NFL Freeroll
Draftkings went big for week one, ready to hand out one hundred thousand dollars of prizes included $10,000 to the first place participant. The top 23,150 will win something and the entries are unlimited so it is worth a shot!
FantasyAces.com – $1,500 NFL Freeroll
This week, Fantasy Aces has a $1,500 freeroll with payouts to the top 250 scorers. They do employ two QBs which is a nice twist in the daily format. With a 10,000 entry limit on this contest, the odds are better than most.
Draftday.com – Entry to $1M contest
Draftday does a weekly freeroll where the winners are entered into a $1 million contest later in the season. The top 50 qualify to create the “perfect lineup.” It is full PPR and only gives -1 for an interception.
Sportstradex.com – None
Sportstradex usually hosts some smaller freerolls but there were none available as of this writing. Most of their contests are smaller entry limits so the ability to cash is much easier than most sites.
Statclash.com – $20 NFL Freeroll
Statclash usually does smaller freeroll contests, both in payout and entry size (500 only). The lineups are pretty standard but they do penalize a little harder for interceptions and fumbles lost (-2) than most daily sites.
Fantasyscore.com – $500 NFL Freeroll
Fantasyscore, affiliated with USA Today, has finally started to introduce some freerolls into their rotation of contests. This one, their first for the NFL, has standard scoring and is limited to the first 10,000 entries.
Draftdawgs.com – $20 NFL Freeroll
The former Reverse Fantasy Football is now Draft Dawgs. While the unique reverse scoring still exists, they also host traditional scoring contests, including this opening week freeroll.
Next week, we will highlight some of the freerolls for week two of the season and don’t forget to participate in the DLF FanDuel weekly contest!
