Premier Conference Performer

Samaje Perine, RB Oklahoma
34 carries for 427 yards five touchdowns, one reception for 19 yards

Not many times in life do people truly see a special athletic performance. Two weeks ago, we got to witness Melvin Gordon break the 15 year old NCAA single game rushing record set by LaDanian Tomlinson. Now those instances don’t seem as special because now we’re getting spoiled. One week later, Samaje Perine broke the record again for 427 yards and he’s only a freshman. It was truly a perfect storm considering many factors, including the fact he didn’t even start the game. Keith Ford started, but lost two fumbles and was injured, which led to more carries for Perine. Oklahoma’s dynamic threat quarterback Trevor Knight didn’t play due to an injury and the backup only completed three passes in the game. Oklahoma was playing a bad Kansas team that just came off a near upset of TCU the week prior as well.

Perine is very thickly built at 5’11” and 243 pounds, although I’d venture to guess he’s closer to 5’9”. With such a compact frame, his center of gravity is low and he produces a lot of power. He continually is falling forward after contact and gaining extra yardage. Towards the end of games, defenders don’t want to tackle him and that showed in the Kansas game. Perine has good feet and acceleration for a big back, which allows him to break so many long runs. I also noticed he was a patient runner that possessed good vision. Overall, I would compare him to Michael Turner with less speed. Both players have the same build and are limited in the agility department. Now as much as I want to believe Perine is the next phenomenal running back prospect, he had massive holes to run through all game. Kansas’ defenders, especially at the second level, continually overran plays and got extremely out of gaps. They also didn’t have much to play for and the effort just wasn’t there. I think Turner right now could’ve run for 200 yards against that team, it was a very poor defensive performance.

Rising

Tyreek Hill, Athlete Oklahoma State
10 carries for 52 yards, one reception six yards, three kickoff returns for 41 yards and one punt return for -2 yards

The Mr. Everything for the Oklahoma State offense is extremely fast and Gundy enjoys getting him in many different ways. However, he has had 10 or more carries in four of the last five games and he’s averaged 4.9 YPC during that time span. He hasn’t had many big plays the last two games, but I would keep him firmly entrenched on my radar.

Tyler Lockett, WR Kansas State
10 receptions for 196 yards

Shame on me, I’m sorry Tyler Lockett for not giving you justice thus far. I’m not a big fan of smaller wide receivers in fantasy football and we know his brothers, they didn’t pan out. But Lockett just flat out produces and now has two straight seasons over 1,000 yards. He is 5’11” and 174 pounds and very fast. However, he’s a hands catcher that runs good routes too and that is what sets him apart from a guy that can run fast. I need to do more film work on Lockett. I don’t see him as a Brandin Cooks type of player, but he definitely should have a role in the NFL.

Corey Coleman, WR Baylor
Three receptions for 75 yards one touchdown, three carries for 24 yards

Coleman has just flown up my board because he’s a playmaker. He’s played in only seven games this season, yet already has 871 yards and nine touchdowns. Every game this season Coleman has a touchdown because he can flat out fly. I’m not sure where Baylor gets these players, but they’re all fast. It’s like they only recruit at the state track meet every year, and I feel bad for defenses. Coleman adjusts well to the ball in the air and runs just as fast with the ball vs without it. He’s a former running back, so he still gets a few carries as well in the offense.

Falling

Kevin White, WR West Virginia
Seven receptions for 63 yards one touchdown

One week after posting some great numbers against Texas, White came back down to only a solid game against Kansas State. The trend of White’s declining yards per reception, I discussed in the last article, is continuing. In five of the last six games, White has below 10 yards per reception. To start the season, White had five straight games over 10 YPR with four of them over 15 YPR. Clearly defenses are bracketing their coverage and paying more attention to him, as good coach would do. But I think this also reveals that White is more of a possession receiver and that should be his role in the NFL. He’s a good overall player and you can read more about him here.

Desmond Roland, RB Oklahoma State
17 carries for 46 yards one touchdown

This was another in what has been a continual string of bad games from Roland and he should be off of radars now.

Marcell Ateman, WR Oklahoma State
None

Ateman continually has effort issues, which is a shame because he is very talented. If he got it together, he could be a heck of a player.

Keith Ford, RB Oklahoma
Eight carries for 34 yards

Ford had a tough day against Kansas as he lost a pair fumbles and battled injuries again, it looked like a high ankle sprain. He broke his leg earlier in the season and now the injuries are starting to pile up. Ford was a very promising recruit, but he may get lost in the background as Samaje Perine looks to have the starting job wrapped up.
