Daily League Bargains: Week Seven

Dan Meylor

Last week was a rough one for my FanDuel bargains. Eli Manning stunk, Victor Cruz got hurt and Wes Welker and Brian Quick were held to a single catch each. Oh well, it’s a new week and there are a handful of dynamite picks for this weekend’s slate. Here goes.

Keep in mind that these suggestions are made for GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool) tournaments with more than 50 participants where players are looking for bargains to fill out their lineups after already inserting their “studs” for the week. Many of them are risky plays and shouldn’t necessarily be considered in head to head or 50/50 games.

Quarterback

Derek Carr, QB OAK

In week six, Carr ($6,800) had his best game in his short pro career, throwing for 283 yards and four touchdowns against the Chargers defense that has been among the best in football against the pass early in the year. For the first time this year the Raiders coaching staff opened up the offense and allowed their rookie signal caller to attack the defense vertically and he didn’t disappoint.

This week he gets to face the Cardinals defense that has given up 833 yards and six touchdowns in the last two weeks. If the Raiders continue to let Carr take his shots down the field, he could be in line for another big game.

Brian Hoyer, QB CLE

Although Jacksonville’s pass defense has been better over the last couple weeks, they still rank among the worst in the league, giving up nearly 300 passing yards per game and having allowed 12 touchdowns through the air so far on the season. Hoyer ($6,400) is the next quarterback to face the Jags and while he hasn’t been asked to do a whole lot through the air in most games this year, the way to beat Jacksonville is through the air.

Hoyer is a high risk, high reward option on FanDuel this week but at his price he’ll allow those that start him to afford some big names in their lineups.

Other Options: Kirk Cousins ($7,200) and Teddy Bridgewater ($5,700)

Running Back

Lamar Miller, RB MIA

[inlinead]Miller ($7,200) has been a regular on this list since Knowshon Moreno went down the first time. Although his price is going up with every week that passes, he may be a bigger value than ever now that Moreno is out for the season. Over his last three games, he’s scored at least 15.2 points in each of them and averaged 17.2 per week on FanDuel.

This week, the Dolphins will face the Bears’ defense that has overachieved to this point in the season. Miller should be in line for 20-plus touches and is an excellent bet to find pay dirt – perhaps more than once.

Justin Forsett, RB BAL

Forsett ($6,200) is my favorite backfield bargain this weekend. He’s outperformed both Lorenzo Taliaferro and Bernard Pierce to this point in the season and should continue to get a majority of the work of the Ravens’ tailbacks. This week he faces the Falcons, who have given up 141 yards per game on the ground and allowed a league worst 12 rushing touchdowns. More importantly, through six games this year Atlanta is giving up 32.33 fantasy points per game to running backs. It’s hard for me to believe Forsett comes out of this game without eclipsing 100-yards and scoring at least once.

Peyton Hillis, RB NYG

In week six, Hillis was on the field for more snaps (34) than his backfield mate and starter Andre Williams (32). Many believe his high usage was due only to New York falling behind early and him being the preferred option of the Giants’ coaching staff in the passing game and that may be the case but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will hold true going forward.

If Tom Coughlin and the rest of New York’s coaches truly believe Williams can’t hold his own in the passing game, they won’t want to completely tip their hand as to when they’re throwing when Hillis is in the backfield. When you consider Coughlin’s history of not trusting rookies, it makes sense that Hillis may be in for an expanded role in the offense going forward.

Hillis will likely be modestly owned in tournaments this week and could be a steal to daily players if his workload increases. He obviously carries a large amount of risk, but it may be well worth it.

Other options: Alfred Morris ($7,200), Ahmad Bradshaw ($6,600) and Storm Johnson ($5,400)

Wide Receiver

Rueben Randle, WR NYG

Now that Victor Cruz is gone for the season, the Giants will need a number one receiver and Randle ($6,500) has the most experience and has been targeted twice as much as any other wide out on the roster over the last couple weeks.

On Sunday night the Giants will take on the Cowboys and may be playing from behind and forced to throw early and often. Randle should be targeted early and often and along with tight end Larry Donnell, will be leaned upon in the red zone.

Michael Floyd, WR ARI

Now that Carson Palmer is back under center for the Cardinals, fantasy players should be able to go back to the Arizona receivers. Floyd ($6,400) finally caught his first touchdown of the season in week six and gets to face Oakland secondary this weekend that has given up 379 yards and three touchdowns to receivers over their last two games. Along with his teammate Larry Fitzgerald ($6,800), Floyd is an excellent play this weekend considering the cost.

Justin Hunter, WR TEN

Hunter ($5,800) has been ridiculously inconsistent throughout the season and last week, came inches away from having the big game that everybody’s been waiting for. I have a feeling that this is the week, though.

The Titans face the Redskins in week seven and Washington’s defense has been susceptible to the deep ball. As long as his quarterback (whoever that is) can get him the ball, Hunter has a good chance to get behind the defense for a long score on Sunday.

James Jones, WR OAK

As I said earlier, the Cardinals defense has been among the worst in the league against the pass so far in 2014 and has given up more than 800 yards through the air and six passing touchdowns in the last two weeks.

Last week Andre Holmes ($6,000) was the star of the show for the Raiders but this week Jones ($5,500) presents the better value as the defenses attention should start shifting towards Holmes. Jones has been targeted more than any other receiver on the roster and won’t be highly owned in tournaments. He’s a boom or bust play, but could pay off in spades this weekend.

Brandon LaFell, WR NE

Over the last three weeks, LaFell ($5,400) has had two games with at least 97 yards and a touchdown but his price hasn’t gone up much on FanDuel. This week he and his Patriots teammates take on the Jets, who have given up 235 passing yards per game and allowed a league high 15 touchdowns through the air. Julian Edelman ($7,400) and Gronk will get their targets but LaFell should get his fair share of the action. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come through with another big game against the Jets’ Swiss cheese defensive secondary.

Other Options: Roddy White ($6,700), Justin Hunter ($5,800), Davante Adams ($5,200) and Preston Parker ($4,800)

Tight End

Vernon Davis, TE SF

Davis ($5,700) had a rough game on Monday night when he dropped two passes and could have come up with a touchdown if not for he and fellow tight end Vance McDonald knocking an easy score out of each other’s hands. The bigger news for Davis coming out of Monday night’s game was probably that he looked healthy for the first time in weeks.

This week Davis will face the Broncos who are coming off a game where they allowed rookie Jace Amaro to catch ten passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Davis should find room to do damage this week and as long as he can hold onto the ball, should prove to be one of the best values among tight ends this week.

Jordan Reed, TE WAS

After missing five games due to a hamstring injury, Reed lit it up in week six against the Cardinals. He caught eight passes for 92 yards on 11 targets despite only playing 35 of Washington’s 65 snaps. Word out of Washington suggests the Redskins plan on upping his usage with each week going forward which is excellent news considering his soft matchup this week. On Sunday Reed will take on the Titans defense that has given up 15 catches for 220 yards and four touchdowns over the last three weeks to tight ends.

Reed is my favorite bargain of the week because of his plus matchup, cheap price and involvement in the Redskins’ offense last week. It’ll be incredibly difficult for me to build a lineup this weekend without him in it.

Other options: Josh Hill ($5,000)
