DLF to Unveil New Premium Content Package

At DLF, we cater to the “die hard,” the “addict,” and the “professional” dynasty league owners. Our loyal followers and forums boast some of the greatest dynasty minds on the planet. Over the years a common theme from many of them has come through loud and clear.

“We want more!”

Last year, we listened and produced the wildly successful Dynasty Essentials Guide, the first ever paid content offered by DLF. This popular publication included all the following:

  • Positional Rankings
  • Rookie Rankings
  • Downloadable Draft Trackers
  • Downloadable Cheat Sheets
  • An Updated Dynasty Mock Draft
  • 32 Team Capsules
  • Free Agency Ramifications
  • Dynasty Debates
  • Buy and Sell Player Lists
  • Third Year Receiver Analysis
  • Yearly Predictions
  • Building Strategies
  • Commissioner Advice

You can check out the 2011 Dynasty Essentials Guide for free to see the type of quality content we put into developing the industry’s best dedicated dynasty and keeper publication.

However, that guide as you knew it will not be offered this year as a one-time purchase.  In the end, we felt it was too difficult to keep the information in that guide relevant for more than a few weeks at a time since things change so fast. We wanted to do something even better this season, and for future seasons as well.

This year, we’re excited to announce we’re truly taking it to the next level. Soon, we’ll be accepting subscriptions for a whole new version of DLF Premium Content. This will include all the information previously included in the Dynasty Essentials Guide on easy to read web pages (rolled out when it becomes most relevant, and easily updated when necessary), and that’s just one very small part of the subscription.  Included in the premium content package will be all the following:

  • All the material previously found in the Dynasty Essentials Guide
  • A new, private section of the DLF Forum available exclusively to subscribing members
  • Access to weekly personalized lineup advice during the season
  • Scheduled chat sessions
  • Periodic downloadable cheat sheets and draft trackers
  • Exclusive eligibility for DLF giveaways and contests
  • Free access to any new development tools we create
  • Content, content and more premium content!

So, you’re probably asking yourself if it’s worth it to become a member of this elite group.  It is, if any of these sound like they apply to you:

  • You want even more content than we already provide
  • You want to avoid your league mates from seeing your posts, questions or discussions on our free forum
  • You want to get your advice and ask your questions to the best of the best in the exclusive forum and through our columns
  • You loved the material found in the Dynasty Essentials Guide, but want it released as more than just a “snapshot” in time
  • You consider yourself (or want to be) a dynasty die hard or expert in the field
  • You want access to things we haven’t offered in the past that look toward the future needs of dynasty owners

For those who aren’t interested in signing up, don’t worry! We will continue to offer tons of free content, and the existing DLF Forum will remain completely free. If you’re not quite ready to join the elite, the DLF site you’ve come to expect will stay very much the same.  The choice is yours!

The Premium content subscription will be offered in two ways:

  • A monthly recurring subscription of $2.49 (that’s less than a coffee a month) – you can unsubscribe at any time if you wish
  • An annual subscription of $19.99 – that’s a savings of 33% off the 12 month recurring price and just $1.67 per month
  • As a special bonus, we’ll be offering the first year at the low rate of $14.99 for anyone who signs up during the first 30 days – that breaks down to just $1.25 per month for the entire first year.

We’re excited to finally be able to fully support the two very different versions of DLF in the way our followers would come to expect. We have a LOT of things in store and look forward to many years of continually improving the single best resource for anyone involved in dynasty and keeper fantasy football leagues.

Thanks for your support!

Why don’t you advertise more instead of charging for this information we can get other places? Don’t get me wrong, I love your guy’s opinions and views, but I think there are other ways to monetize rather than charging the users….

DLF_KenK

That’s a very fair question “Krcil.”

First off, you’d honestly be amazed at how much money we don’t really get from advertising revenue on the site. In return, it’s extremely expensive for us to advertise DLF outside of the site here and we’ve seen very little return in what we have done.

That being said, revenue we generate goes back into the site in some way, shape or form. Having more subscribers could allow us to do more advertising, thus improving the quantity and quality of tools and content. We’ll also be able to maintain a group of very talented writers who can produce as much content as our followers expect into the future. In addition, this will allow us to expand into a lot of different areas in terms of tools, utilities, apps, or whatever else may cater to the future needs of the group.

Our goal for this is really to expand DLF into what we think it can become – the single best dynasty resource on the planet.

Our sincere hope and expectation is the information and access you have here is something you COULDN’T get some place else. Our users here really have the ability to help us shape this into something really quite unique.

As we said in the post, the free forum will stay the same and we’re still committed to providing a lot of free content, as always.

We certainly understand what you are saying and we’re working the advertising model as we can as well. The goal here is to be able to do even more than we’re doing currently. As you’ve likely seen, we’re producing a lot more content now and want to bring even greater content to the site and keep it consistentlyh growing and impactful. We want to have the best dynasty content on the planet, period. Raising a small sum of capital will allow us to accomplish many of the goals that we have in front of us. Greater content, bringing the legacy Dynasty Essentials Guide to an online environment, tools, utilities, databases, etc. etc. all are much more reachable through this effort.

First and foremost was our desire to provide both a very valuable free model as well as a model that is value added that can also help grow the site in a way that every single member can find value in, free or paid.

We’re very hopeful that our loyal long standing users will help support us in this endeavor, continue to call us home and help us grow to be THE very best fantasy site on the planet … and we have every intention of getting there. The cost structure is very low and that was done with purpose to minimize financial impact to subscribers.

We have a VERY strong vision and have a lot of great plans. We hope our readers, viewers and guests will support us through this phase and be a part of what we’re building here!

Thanks for the question!

“Our sincere hope and expectation is the information and access you have here is something you COULDN’T get some place else. Our users here really have the ability to help us shape this into something really quite unique.”

First of all thank you very much for the good and honest response. Coming from the web development side of things, I have some grasp on what kind of money comes in, but on the other hand, I have no idea what your guy’s expenses are for getting this content.

Also don’t call me a hypocrite if (most likely when) I sign up, because like I said before I love your guys’ opinions and views.

But just remember… once you start charging the expectations go up even higher. Good luck and I hope it all works out.

Oh and I used a quote, but didn’t even mention it. But if you guys can provide things that we CANNOT get any where else than you will prove to be worth the $2 a month or whatever it is.

DLF_KenK

Being on the web side of things, I’m sure you have a grasp at what it costs to host a site (and one that has grown to need more horsepower, so to speak). We also pay for the images we use (we don’t hack them off the web) and there are lots of other expenses, too, like LLC costs, taxes and everything else…but that’s something we’re dealing with and not really important to most.

Many just want to know what their $14.99/$19.99/or $2.49 will get them.

We have every intention of maximizing this to the best of our abilities – that’s what’s most important to us. We understand people are going to have heightened expectations and that’s really why we spent so much time on the Essentials Guide last year. We’re not obtuse to that and actually embrace it.

We’ll be rolling out content every month and asking for honest feedback from the subscribers. In fact, one of the premium forums will be dedicated to suggestions for articles THEY want to see. With the staff we’ve assembled, we’ll be able to do a lot more of those than we ever could have before.

We would never call you a hypocrite at all. In fact, you seem like an honest guy who is going to be able to help us direct that content into exactly what you want – uniqueness.

We feel we’re the unquestioned leaders in dynasty information, and this is just going to take that up a notch.

i agree, the number of hits u get from your loyal readers(rotoworld anyone?) you guys could get lots of paid ads for your website.how many sites have people checking on it 3-5 times a day? this is a first class site dont turn it into football guys or no offseason i boycotted those sites because they charge

Thanks for the honest response Tebow. What we are offering here is essentially the same content which was offered last season in the form of a downloadable pdf guide, but instead presented in a much more flexible format. On top of that, we offered some other features and benefits which we were not able to offer last season.

As far as the income model, Rotoworld is a much larger site than we are, they receive a ton more traffic, and thus are able to generate a ton more advertising income than we ever would be able to. On top of that, Rotoworld also offers a premium subscription service for those readers of thier who want to go beyond all of their excellent freely available content;

http://rotoworld.com/premium/seasonpass/football/main_page.aspx

http://rotoworld.com/premium/seasonpass/baseball/main_page.aspx

That is exactly the same type of model we are looking at. Offering a ton of good stuff for free, and some additional in-depth content for those who want to go the extra mile.

There is no pressure to subscribe. If you want to continue using the site, accessing all the stuff you have become accustomed to, you will still be able to do so for free.

Thanks! KM

that’s not true though. You’re basically saying give us $20 to use the forum that all of the established forum guys will be using or participate in any live chats. I don’t really care about the content at the site I’ve always been more of a forum reader. Now i’ll just get to read all the dynasty noobs who dont pay $20. That’s cool though everyone has the right to make a living.

I can’t imagine either forum is ever going to be stale with inactivity. I would expect many of our forum users will actually be using both strategically.

You wouldn’t believe how many people have asked over the years to make something privatized to help conceal their trade ideas or building strategies from their team mates.

If you’re ONLY using the forum and not reading any of the content, I’d just invite you to hold tight and see what it looks like. We’re adding members on a daily basis and many are incredibly smart people. The forum was thriving when we had 200 members – now we have 2,000. It’s not as if EVERYONE will move over. In fact, the premium content simply isn’t for everyone out there.

Again, it’s an option.

There will no doubt be a balance of owners in either forum at any given time.

DLF_KenK

Trust me when I say we’ve looked into every possible avenue to generate income and will continue to do so.

Rotoworld’s model really isn’t that much different. They have tons of free information, but also have certain aspects of their site that require some type of subscription (season pass, draft guide, etc.). Of course, they also have NBC to help back their development.

Much like with the Dynasty Essentials Guide offering last year, this is a supplemental and optional offering we think provides significant value.

DLF_Jeff

I would urge anyone not to “boycott” any site due to a charge. But to certainly vote with your $$ and devalue any site, service or product that doesn’t give you a return. There is still going to be a large amount of free content available and the free forum will remain unchanged. Over and above that, we want to add even more impactful value.

Instead, support the sites and services that you feel do give you return for your hard-earned dollars. We continue to be committed to being a first class site and that is why we want to grow the model, bring in even greater writers and content and add value that you can’t find anywhere else.

Many loved the DEG of last year and said they would have paid double for its contents. it’s essentially free within this new service. We are very committed to what you are saying and the vision is still the same.

If you have come to trust and value us here, help us to grow it as you won’t find a group of individuals more committed to that value and vision!!!

If you have an idea for an article, shoot a PM to one of us in the forum and we’ll be glad to take a look at it. Here’s a link to a forum post with a little more info.

Thank you for your support Guac! It has been quite the decisioning process but are VERY excited about some of the possibilities that we hope this will provide. We want every one of our loyal readers to support us here because of what we believe we can accomplish. I could bore everyone with the details of the model and how it is so much more sustainable in this fashion with SO much more possibilities going forward … but we understand that some will just be very disappointed in the decision.

If all of you could understand our approach and commitment here, I think everyone would be very excited to support the growth of the site here in this way. This is all about sustainability and growth.

Thanks for your support.

Would you guys be willing to make the guide from last year available for free? That way those of us that didn’t get it can see what kind of analysis you’re offering in the premium sections. It might help show the difference and help people decide if it is worth the money. Just a thought.

I’ll look into that for sure. I just have to make sure everything is still active out there after we shut it down. Keep in mind this is obviously the “paper version,” but you’ll get the idea of what to expect for this portion of the content.

Keep in mind, you’re not comparing apples to apples here. The DEG content will be included, but that’s just a small part of what we’re going to do here.

Check it out and get an idea of what we offered in it last year. This year, we will be improving upon that by ensuring the content is always up to date, and providing a format for folks to engage and discuss, just like we are doing here.

What? Not the real Tebow? 🙂

Think of it this way … we’re about the cost of three drinks at that bar for a year’s worth of buzz. 🙂

Would you believe that we’ve had a fair number of private emails asking for us to move to a paid service so that it would weed out some of the free aspects of the site and the “public” nature of all the posts? Many don’t want to post on the site for fear that their entire league can read it and know what they’re thinking. We’ve had more some that have asked for us to move to a subscription model so that there could be more private access.

We want to be value-added for what we are creating here and are asking our loyal members for that support to that end. We’ve got great expectations and if you’ve come to love our site, then support us so we can continue to make it even better. You have my promise that this move help ensure that we can continue to sustain what we’ve all built and grow it.

You are exactly the type of hard core member we’re going after. You’re a die hard, active, engaged and a lifer! Help us be what the others can’t!

Tom
Reply to  DLF_Jeff

Just a quick question – how would a subscription model disallow league mates from seeing potential trades? Is that simply based on the fact that you believe that most members wont pay? I know that most of my league mates are on this site, and I don’t think $20 is enough to sway them away from the paid content, so while you will be getting more dollars, (which is the goal, I understand, I work for myself, too) I don’t see how this is going to reduce other owners in my league from seeing potential trades/offers/WW moves, etc

DLF_Jeff
Reply to  Tom

We’ll charge them double! In all seriousness though, there isn’t a lot we can do about that. But believe me when I say that it’s your commitment to the forum, active discussion and engagement that really elevates your results and knowledge. All of our league mates know that we run DLF and that hasn’t stopped us from winning our leagues or even the Dynasty Experts League this past year with 11 of the best experts in fantasy football.

So don’t worry too much about your competition seeing your posts, but be mindful of just how you post information.

I’m an ESPN insider as well. In the 6 years that we’ve been doing this site, and learning about what it takes to get to the next level, it has changed my mind on how I support other sites that have value to me … and I do so eagerly now. I expect everyone else will make their own decisions based on the value that we do or do not bring them.

The great part about our new online version of last year’s DEG is that it will provide for greater opportunity for update and new information. All suggestions are welcomed. We slaved over how to keep the guide updated last year for all of you … to make sure it had maximum impact for your drafts and team building.

Most sites would charge a subscription + an extra charge for the guide and we’re not doing that. But through this offering we feel that we can then help those that want the premium service to have that advantage over those that decide they don’t want it.

Thanks for the comment.

Believe me when I say that we are all extremely sensitive to the thought of this being a “money grab” and nothing hurts us more. Any of you that have followed us as we build DLF understand what we’re trying to create … and you’ve helped us become what we are today. We really do want to have THE very best forum and site on the planet and we won’t rest until that is the case. We want you, our loyal reader/supporter to be so dedicated to the site and our growth because you believe in what we are doing, that you can’t help but want us to succeed with our vision and goals … and be a part of it.

It is very much about creating a better product and the pricing was done with the balance of that in mind. We want it to be very available to everyone that wants to be a part of what we’re trying to create. The income will allows us to sustain the best writers and the volume of quality content while also providing the flexibility to do much, much more in the years that follow.

I can honestly say that I was skeptical at first but have come to like it. It’s not always useful but I have found it to be useful and as a good reminder for myself on those nights when I’ve been up too late writing and find my comments coming off as too harsh or brash.

It’s also a good way for us to understand if someone makes a comment that is generally supported or not supported. We’d prefer comments for that purpose but it’s much easier for most to just provide a quick click of a thumb that essentially gives us that same measurement.

its a tool for group think. if you say something negative about a player that is overvalued (stewart, dez…) then you get thumbs downed even if you make a valid point. when someone else will just write “feed this beast” and get 4 thumbs up.
its also the only thing i dont like about this site. good luck with the subscriptions guys.

A totally great value for the content you guys provide despite what naysayers may think. The guide last year was awesome…I spend more at lunch than what I did on that guide. I’d pay $15 for that guide alone this year, let alone the new bonus content! Thanks Red … it will be a transition process for sure but one that we’re very excited about. We want to maintain the commitment to both on the site. Our community and forum are of utmost importance to us and all of you have our greatest commitment because you are our foundation. The die-hards deserve a place to discuss stategies and information as part of an elite group … so that you don’t have to worry about everyone seeing every post.

If any of you have hobbies that you utilize a message board for you understand what I’m talking about between free/paid models. Yahoo message boards can contain a lot of “colorful” information, but as soon as you become part of a paid community, the information impact goes up noticeably. We have good people ensuring that the information on all of our boards here stays relevant, but at the same time, we want to provide another level of service to those that want to kick it up a notch.

Thanks fro the comment. The benefit of the doubt is all we can ask as we grow from here.

There have been discussions in the past as it relates to possibilities … but that is a HUGE undertaking and something that would likely take us too far away from what we’re trying to accomplish in the near term. Currently, other engines are handling that pretty well and theres not a great need to recreate the wheel. More inclined to have greater partnership efforts.

Greater mobile (site, apps, etc.) presence has been discussed. The problem is the design/development work required. We’ve made inroads to some resources but it’s not a cheap under-taking and something that takes a lot of planning to do it well.

The short answer to your question is “yes, in time”. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

The number one thing that we desire is having the very best fantasy community on the planet. We already feel that we have that and don’t want to lose a single individual.

I think many sites forget that it is their community that can make them great. We were founded on that principle belief and I can personally guarantee that it will not be forgotten and is/was the primary driving factor with this move as odd as some may see that being. As such, we want each one to be a premium member because through that commitment, we can accomplish so much more.

You may not see the dimished content on the free site for a year or two but I am of the mind that it will eventually happen. How can it not? How will you decide what should be free and what shouldn’t? If I am a paying customer I want it all to be on the paid site not both.

I think you will struggle here and you are closing the gap between you and the existing sites that already charge. Not good but I am sure I will cough up the cash to see what the difference is. I just hope it’s something special because if it isn’t, someone will just create a new site and steal your audience for good.

There’s only so much time in the day!

Deciding what goes where is certainly going to be tough for us to determine at first and we’re offering that discounted price for year one in the hopes that people can see just what we can offer to them. It’s not going to be one big package like the DEG, but more of a yearly commitment to quality work.

How much better is that than having us just simply ask for $15 for the DEG? That would have been significantly less work for us, but we want to provide something BETTER. In fact, I’d bet the same group of people who would have paid $15 for the DEG are the same to sign up for the yearly content. In my mind, we’re inviting heightened expectations.

If that drives people away or spurns someone to make a different and better site, I wish them the best of luck.

There is only so much time in the day and that’s really why you’ve seen us add so many more qualified writers over the span of the last few months. Depending on how this goes, we could add even more to make sure the content flow is continuous.

It’s been a natural evolution for us. We’ve posted nearly 500 articles and created that guide in-house since the beginning of 2010 with mainly just TWO of us writing.

With more on the staff, we’re confident we can make things work well.

As an “undecided” but loyal reader and fan of the site, I wondered will the volume and quality of the free articles diminish?

Meaning..you guys already do a superb job of rankings, answering questions, and general articles that come out nearly daily. Will that slow to a trickle and/or be required to pay for access? Or will the new pay content simply be more in depth and have more features as essentially mentioned above.

I love the site..I’d hate to see the current information that is freely shared and enjoyed by most everyone mostly vanish to those who simply have larger wallets..(especially in this economy) etc. And while I think what you guys are charging is more than fair and certainly inexpensive..I get 95% of my advice from here and Rotoworld. But as a general rule I feel I do not need to pay to simply get a slightly deeper insight to the positional battles or rookie rankings..etc..
That said..I am open to the idea of paying, so just want to know if the free info will mostly disappear or not 🙂

Basically, itd be cool if you guys offered the new member services for free for maybe..the first 2 weeks of the season or whatever..to allow those of us on the fence to see what we might be missing should be not sign up!

The free content won’t slow to a trickle or disappear. As we’ve said, we’re committed to providing value both ways.

It was never our intention to have something new EVERY day, but that’s just how it’s going right now and I think that’s great. My hope is that I and our newly formed staff will be able to keep up a good, solid pace. I’m not sure it’s going to be every day (that was going to be tough for us, regardless), but we’ll take care of things the best way possible.

What we won’t do is just put up garbage to say we had something new each day. To me, that’s bush league and an insult to our readers. If you want to see that, there are plenty of other fantasy sites out there. While some articles may interest you more than others, we’re not into these one or two paragraph filler things – you guys are too good for that.

The paid content will be more in-depth and go deeper than most of the free content for sure. It will have those modules I described, but certainly much more, too. The free content will look very similar and will continue to promote fruitful discussion.

If you’re on the fence, I’d invite you to skip coffee or a snack one day and spend the $2.49 for one month – I think you’ll get a good idea of where you should be.

Either way, we think you’ll be happy.

Are there any plans to have a separate price for the increased forum access only. I’ve been posting in the forums for over 2 years and not to sound disrespectful but I’m just not interested in your rankings and articles but i do however really enjoy the forums and would probably pay some added $$$ to use the private version but I’m not really interested in paying for the stuff that doesnt interest me.

There really isn’t at this point in time. We didn’t feel it was best to have too many things going on at once – it was just going to get too complicated.

The elite forum access is certainly a big draw, but our hope would be some of the new articles would somehow pique your interest.

This is great! Can’t wait to get updates to the Draft Essentials Guide. I found it very useful last year, but having more updates and details sounds good.

This may sound selfish, but I have not told anyone in my league (until last week I told one owner and swore him to secrecy). So having a private section for the forum is great…it may cause me to share the site, but I doubt it. 🙂

Looking forward to giving you my rotoworld money this year. Keep up the great work!

Thank you Wadski. As I mentioned on another comment, it’s really the active engagement and posting within the community that makes you a better dynasty coach, not the exclusivity of being the only one in your league taking part. All of our competitors and league mates know we run this site and most read our stuff … but it hasn’t stopped us from winning our leagues or even the Expert’s league this past year.

Don’t keep us a secret as we’re trying to assemble the best community on the planet for 365 days a year of football and fantasy discussion. Tell your league mates about us, but also out-engage them on the forums and our content!

I was wondering when you guys might start charging a fee. I enjoy the content and I think it has value. You get what you pay for and “free” can’t go on forever and remain credible. I’ll pay for something I want that has value. Your continued existence is in my best interest, so $20 bucks is the least I can do. 🙂

Reply to  Robert Smiley

I’m glad to hear you say that Robert. Most probably won’t truly understand just how much a site of this caliber takes to run. It is/was significant beyond any of our expectations. There have been many times when one of the three owners was close to having to be bow out because of the sheer time constraints and the loss of family time. Thankfully, the three of us work very well together and all have very complementary skills. Then combine that with the others now that write, administer, tweet to help us be even better and we know we have something special.

There’s a reason why so many sites start and fail … because of the time sink that it is to develop a following and then keep people engaged and coming back. Quite honestly, it has taken 6 years of VERY hard work, dedication, tolerance, commitment, re-commitment and soul searching to keep going and going.

Without a model like that which we are announcing today, we couldn’t keep writers engaged over the long haul, keep developing content at the pace we are or even consider dedicating more time to take the site to the next level for all of you. We knew/know we would get flamed by many for this move, but it became understood by all that we truly “can’t go on forever” without some change. We either had to push all in to develop our dream/vision of what could be or simply admit that over time … we’d lose motivation or burnout in the years to come.

We’ve never been more committed to earning all of your continued respect as each of you continue to earn ours. This site is a labor of love and we have great plans to make it even better for ALL of us owners, partners, staff, writers and most importantly, our community.

Cheers!

What sites do you guys consider quality?

DLF_Jeff
Reply to  Greg G.

There are a lot of quality sites out there Greg, no doubt about that. From FFToolbox, to PFF, to FBG and 4for4 … each site that has an active community and updated information is valuable in our minds. The trick is getting a community that supports what we’re doing and then our ability to consistently provide value to it.

Where we believe we’re special is that we don’t go dark after the season … that’s when the fun begins! And I don’t think there is a site now that can match us on impactful fantasy content in the off-season.

I’ll echo what Jeff says, I think there are a number of good sites out there, each has certain strengths and add some specific value.

I highly recommend you visit our Links page, where we link out to a variety of fantasy football resources. Not a page full of links, but a handful of carefully selected sites that we genuinely believe offer terrific products and services. The links are frequently updated to add new sites we like, and remove sites that are no longer making the grade.

As someone who didn’t use the guide last year, I’d like some additional information on what exactly this premium content is. For instance, I currently can access your rankings, and the many articles that you write.

Are you saying that this content will be going to a subscription model? In addition, will there be articles, etc. that are subscriber only?

I use a few other sites and I’ll gladly pay when the information is good. On many however, the info dries up in the offseason, which is when a lot of the action happens (at least for me) in many dynasty leagues.

So, for someone new to your site, can you give a little breakdown (or perhaps show an example of what you offered last year, since the info is outdated now anyway) of what we would be paying for? The price seems reasonable, but I like to know what I’m buying!

DLF_KenK
Reply to  Derek

You’ll STILL be able to access the rankings (they’ll remain free, gang) and many of the articles produced.

In essence, there are going to be two sets of articles produced – those on the free side and those on the subscriber side.

As far as the offseason goes, we feel like this is OUR TIME. We’ve churned out over 80 articles since the season has been over and actually produce more in the “offseason” than during the regular fantasy season.

As far as knowing what you’re paying for, there really is no precedent since this is brand new, however, we are going to post a link for our “Dynasty Essentials Guide” from last year. That will give you a good idea of the kind of information you’d have access to (only in an online version now).

Thanks for the info. As I said, the price tag is nice, so I’m sure I’ll pony up the cash. I just wanted to know what I’m actually getting for it.

To be honest, FBG’s is the only other site I pay for on a yearly basis…and while it’s a wealth of knowledge during the redraft season, they really drop the ball on dynasty content. Hopefully you guys can fill that void.

Quick statement and a quick question. First off, I think this is awesome. This site has been a godsend for me in my first 2 seasons of dynasty FF. If you guys do end up making it big, which I think there is a good chance that will happen, you deserve every penny you make. To provide this service for free for years speaks volume to your dedication and love of the game, so I have no doubt the paid info will be well worth it. I will almost certainly be signing up.

My question was last year I bought the DEG (very much worth the money). When I downloaded it I thought I remembered seeing that I would receive future versions of the DEG at no additional cost. Does this update mean that this is no longer true? As someone that will probably be paying for the subscription it doesn’t make a big difference to me, but I feel like I need to ask on principle. Thanks again for everything and good luck!

DLF_KenK

The Essentials Guide as you remember it won’t really exist to update. All the information that we mentioned will be available, but on web pages we roll out strategically instead of downloads we need to go back and reconfigure.

Think of it this way, we can release information at staggered times when it’s relevant instead of all at once, which caused great challenges. Go to any supermarket and pick up a fantasy magazine and you’ll find it dated by the time you hit the checkstand.

Last year, we released the Essentials Guide with all the profiles and team capsules, then events happened that changed a lot of things very quickly, including many of the player profiles.

With this method, we can release the rookie information before the draft for example, then quickly reconfigure things after, without having to go back and reconfigure a bunch of paper pages and band-aid things together.

I remember last year when we updated the guide, then saw Ryan Williams and Mikel Leshoure go down in the following two days, making it old again. In order to update, we had to go make changes and ask people to download it AGAIN.

Instead of finding one particular snapshot in time to release the DEG, now we can just release information when it’s most applicable.

To expand just a bit on that, not only will we have the ability to rapidly update the content previously found in the guide, but by delivering it via a website, we can also host feedback and conversation about the topic. I think we’d all agree that one of the best things about this site, and the web in general, is the community we have here and the conversations we have which help to enlighten us all.

It is, after all, the reason Al Gore invented the internet.

I am interested in the members only forum for sure, but I do have a question about the in season content. Will you have updated rankings each week and will there be members only weekly advice such as risers and fallers and guys we should be scooping up in our Dynasty leagues?

My leagues are 80% Dynasty and I still do a couple redrafts so this would seem like the place I should be. I am of the mind of using pay content because I do not like others in my leagues to just read the content I am getting unless they are paying also.

I am all for the switch to a pay site, and look forward to this season. My last question is when is the deadline for the 30 day discount. I know its only 5 bucks difference but I always like a deal.

Thanks and Good Luck

DLF_Jeff
Reply to  Chandler Bing

Discount deadline will likely be the end of May. As far as in-season content, yes … all that should be available as well. We don’t yet have a strict content schedule for in-season work and we’re still working the model for member vs. free. We’re still committed to our free members for certain content and the forums but we also want to give our subscription members a product that helps them gain a competitive advantage.

That all said, most dynasty coaches feel the off-season is where the real work is done and, quite frankly, I don’t know of another single site with the commitment to quality content during the off-season that we have.

We’ll be rolling with pre-draft premium content followed by post-draft premium content as well, which essentially is the same type of info from last year’s Dynasty Essentials Guide (DEG) that was sold separately. We’re taking that online and making it just part of the service.

George

I like the idea and will most likely sign up. My question relates to the “members only” forum posting area. I like the idea of being able to post questions or discuss ideas in a forum where my league members can not see what I am thinking. However if they also join, how does it prevent this? Is there some way this new forum will be different from the free forum, so if your league members do join they will not be able to identify you?

DLF_Jeff
Reply to  George

Well … if they join, then they would see it of course. Honestly, we’d prefer to get as much support for the service because it’s through the service that we’ll be able to do even more going forward.

I would suggest either a change of nickname or simply just not worry about it that much.

We here at DLF all play in multiple leagues as well and the first hang up that we had to get over was not holding back on our strategy articles, sleepers, rookie analysis, etc.

If there is something else you are thinking of, please let us know.

I got the guide last year and absolutley loved it. I couldn’t find anywhere else on the web that gave such an in depth rookie rankings list. It certainly gave me confidence heading into my rookie draft last year (which my league does in may). It would certainly be nice to have more predraft rookie rankings and tiers though as it would help for trades prior to the draft and to pay what to me seems like a reasonable fee for simply what you offered last year is great. You can count on a year subscription from me at least and if you guys keep doing what you are doing then I don’t see that changing.

That is PRECISELY what we want to build here. Our goal is not to make a million dollars on this site. Trust me, it’s far from that.

What we want to accomplish is conitnuing to build this community with the RIGHT people and be able to offer the content, forums and tools to make anyone successful in their league.

We’re not trying to add 10,000 new people. Dynasty fantasy football is a niche market and we want to be laser focused. Beyond that, we have a group of people in the forum who have been here from the beginning who are incredibly valuable and have helped shape DLF into what it is today.

When we started this with our group of charter members, we promised them we’d try to build this into something special and we’re well on our way.

Thanks for the kind words. Our success will be measured in the loyalty of our followers, nothing more.

Just my opinion, it seems there is plenty of content that is worth charging for on this site. What you’re offering is completely reasonable. For the amount of time and information I gain from the articles and forums, $20+ a year is completely worth it. To those who say otherwise, give these guys a break – they’ve earned it. Every fantasy consulting site out there charges and given the niche dynasty format that is unparalleled anywhere along with the high level and amount of content, why in the world would you expect this information to free?

LOVE LOVE LOVE this site…I am a firm believer in capitalism and how it can benefit all involved if done the right way. You guys are doing things the right way. My only beef with the site over the last couple of years has been the sometimes long amount of time between article postings. Thanks Rob, that’s exactly what we are going for here. We’re looking to maximize the amount of content and the number of eyes on it via a price point that is nearly a slam dunk for potential members. We’re not interested in milking membership for every dollar. We felt last year’s DEG was even great a twice the price so, with the reformatted guide as part of the premium content, in our minds that makes the price exceedingly reasonable.

But as I said previously, the community we’re developing is where our focus is and we want thousands of rabid, happy, focused, members that consider themselves die-hards and elite.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the props! We’ve redesigned the pages on the subscription content to eliminate any ads, so I think you’ll be quite happy.

As far as the price goes, we’re not trying to retire early, I can tell you that much. We’re really just trying to find a price point that meets (and hopefully exceeds) expectations and lets us grow the site.

That should benefit everyone.

A good thing stops being a good thing when it starts costing money.

Well, all we ask is that people make the choice that’s best for them. If you love DLF as it is and think it’s a good thing, you may not be the best candidate for the paid subscription for the premium content, giveaways and private forum. As we’ve said, we’re dedicated to still providing tons of free content and the forum as it is, will remain the same.

If you’re someone who wants privatized content and private forums, and were happy with the Essentials Guide last year, this new version of DLF will suit you better. After all, giving us a try even for one year is only going to cost $1.25 per month. We feel that’s a very, VERY reasonable cost for the work that’s going into the content and any downloadables.

The money we generate can go back into creating some upgrades and will help us maintain a nice group of writers.

To tell you the truth, our goal is for this NOT to be a good thing any longer…we’re hoping to make this site a great thing.

As a long time member Misfit, I’m troubled that you feel that way. I do understand what you’re saying, but I most certainly don’t agree with that view. I urge all consumers of a service to support those places, services and products that bring value to your life. Since starting DLF six years ago … I believe that even more vehemently now as we now know exactly what it takes to create, sustain and maintain a site that brings value to so many. And this step will provide an opportunity to take it to the next level.

In all honesty, given the sheer amount of time and sweat put into the site, we either need to take it to the next level or find more hours in the day to balance at all. We’re excited about the former.

As Ken said, there will still be plenty of free content as well and the free forum will remain unchanged. For $1.25/mo., we feel that is a very compelling value.

We’d love to see you continue to support DLF and our future endeavors.

It’s too bad that you guys have to keep explaining why the sight is the way it is. There are those like myself that enjoy it and others that don’t. I’m not sure if all the explanations will sway either side. I think guys will just do what is comfortable to them, weather it’s paying a little extra or just doing what they’ve been doing all along.

I am still wondering if we will see some Non-PPR rankings going forward?

In most cases, you won’t “sway” others with words. Most feel the way they do for a reason and all reasons are valid. We’re passionate about what we do and want to make sure that everyone understands our M.O., even if it is just for others to see. And you are very correct, of course.

We’ve discussed that many times and other possible approaches. Rankings are probably the most time consuming aspect of the site due to the sheer number of players and the fact that they can change dramatically very quickly. With so many different scoring systems, we want to make sure that we have good rankings available but also want to make sure that if we do something … we do it well and consistently. Once you have players ranked for one format, it’s a relatively easy exercise to bump them up and down for your own format.

But it’s something that we continue to discuss because we understand how much some prefer separate rankings for the primary different scoring systems.

Thanks the for the comment!

Our goal with the communication here is really just to be very open and honest about what this entails and why we’re moving this way so people really AREN’T swayed one way or another and can make an educated decision for themselves.

The only “swaying” we really want to make is squashing the assumption that this is somehow done as a “money grab” or that we’re all of a sudden focused on the bottom line instead of growing the site.

That really can’t be further from the truth. We love our members here and want to make sure each of them gets what they want out of DLF, regardless of if they subscribe or not.
