Devy Stock Market

Nathan Powell

The fantasy football stock market is constantly fluctuating and it is always important for us to stay on top of player stocks going up and downs. In devy stock market, each week I covet the best and worst performances of the week and how they impact the value of these players in devy fantasy football leagues.

Cardinals Continue Chirping – Tutu Atwell, WR Louisville and Javian Hawkins, RB Louisville

Last week, I talked about the impressive week one performances of Dez Fitzpatrick and Braden Smith. This week, two more Louisville players had impressive performances in Atwell and Hawkins against the Miami Hurricanes.

Atwell had eight catches for 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He had a breakout season in 2019, more than doubling Louisville second-leading receiver with 1,272 receiving yards and over one third of the team’s receiving touchdowns with (11 of 32). Atwell’s main concern as an NFL prospect is his size. Listed at 5’9” and 165 pounds, he will likely need to add weight to be considered as a possible day two NFL draft pick, but his play on the field has shown he would be worth that investment. In devy leagues where Atwell is rostered, I think he could be a sell-high as he puts up big performances for Louisville. There are just safer assets – both in devy and the NFL – that you can trade the undersized wideout for.

Much like Atwell dominated the passing game for Louisville in 2019, Javian Hawkins did the same in the running game, and we are seeing more of the same in 2020. Hawkins was a workhorse against Miami with 27 carries for 164 rushing yards and a touchdown. One of the NFL concerns for Hawkins will be if he can carry an RB1 load, and he certainly did that against Miami. With only four catches for 58 receiving yards in 2019, Hawkins’ receiving profile is one that leaves something to be desired, but if he can show some receiving ability this season, he could be a day two pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Big Play Brevin – Brevin Jordan, TE Miami

Jordan showed why he is in consideration for TE1 in college football and the 2021 NFL draft with his performance against Louisville. Like I said last week, it is rare to see a tight end on the college football leaderboard for receiving yards, but Jordan did just that, tallying the fifth-most receiving yards in college football this week with seven catches for 120 receiving yards and one touchdown.

He was a contributor early in his college career with 32 catches and four receiving touchdowns in only nine games as a freshman, something you rarely see at the position. Last season, Jordan averaged 3.88 catches for 55 receiving yards. While many devy players likely expected more from Jordan in 2019, he is giving him just that in 2020. Jordan has ten catches through two games for 171 receiving yards and a trip to the end zone in each game. As D’Eriq King has more success in the passing game than 2019 Hurricane quarterbacks, this could be a big statistical season for Jordan.

Smelling Like Roses – Zay Flowers, WR Boston College

Flowers was one of the most impressive wide receivers in college football this week. He had five catches for 162 receiving yards and a touchdown that went for 62 yards in the Boston College season opener. Flowers had a relatively quiet freshman season with 536 total yards, but he did so as a dual-threat at the wide receiver position with 195 of those yards coming on the ground.

Every year, I say in this article, it’s not about the rushing yards themselves that makes this attractive, it’s the fact that the school is showing that they wanted to get the ball in that player’s hands as much as possible and that was the case for Flowers in 2019 with 27 carries at the wide receiver position. Flowers is a player to monitor and with more performance like the opener, he will be a devy pick in leagues next off-season.

Bentley Busts on the Scene – Ulysses Bentley IV, RB SMU

Bentley led the nation in rushing yards last week with 227 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a breakout performance against North Texas. He saw limited action in his freshman season with only seven carries, but his performance in SMU’s second game should catapult him to plenty of volume in the SMU backfield as he averaged 11.9 yards per carry, including an 84-yard run.

Bentley has five rushing touchdowns through two games and I expect to see more of the same the rest of the season, which will make him an option in deeper devy leagues next off-season.

Ooh La La for Uiagalelei – DJ Uiagalelei, QB Clemson

This one is probably premature, but obviously we didn’t expect to see much of Uiagalelei this season behind soon-to-be number one pick Trevor Lawrence, but we got to see a glimpse of him last weekend against Citadel. Uiagalelei completed 8 of 11 passes for 75 yards, and the 6’5” 245-pound true freshman showed that he will be a rushing threat in the red zone with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

The five-star quarterback also had eight rushing touchdowns as a senior in high school last year according to MaxPreps. Uiagalelei’s stock will continue to rise as we get closer to him getting the starting job in 2021, similar to the stock of Spencer Rattler at Oklahoma, who showed after one game it looks like he is worth the hype with four passing touchdowns in his starting debut.
