All About the Solo: Week One

Eric Olinger

One of the most frustrating things in IDP leagues is seeing your stud linebacker fly all over the field on game days only to see the home score keeper dilute his performance by divvying up his tackles as assists. On the flip side, if your league doesn’t score solos and assists too differently, you’ll have a better idea of which teams hand out assists like candy.

Not everyone knows this, but the NFL does not recognize a tackle as an official statistic. Tackles are scored by the home team’s official score keeper and those are the stats you see on the news and websites. The league made an effort to standardize what is and isn’t a solo tackle back in 2007 when they sent a video to all NFL teams, but it is still the discretion of the home score keeper.

Even after this effort there is a still a large discrepancy from team to team and week-to-week. I will be tracking this throughout the season to give you a better idea of what to expect when choosing your IDPs each week.

While some people might not know New York Giants middle linebacker B.J. Goodson very well yet, they will now. He led the league in tackles in week one with 14 solos and four assists while playing 99% of the snaps. He has the early look of one of the season’s biggest breakout IDP stars. The Giants appear to have finally solved their seemingly never ending search for a difference making linebacker.

It’s been an interesting off-season for Demario Davis who was traded from Cleveland back to the New York Jets. He returned to IDP glory with 14 total tackles and half a sack while playing every snap. He’s going to be a low end LB1 this year but I wouldn’t invest in him long term.

Myles Jack answered the call for Jacksonville and it looks like he’s finally all the way back. He looked great on Sunday while playing every snap. More importantly, Paul Posluszny only played 8 of 79 snaps. Barring injury, the future is now in Jacksonville and that defense looked vicious.

Jatavis Brown is completely back for the Los Angeles Chargers and has a very real shot to finish 2017 as a top five IDP linebacker. He’s one of the safest bets for double digit tackles each and every week. Ramon Humber is an odd name to pop up on the leading tackler list. He played 98% of the team’s defensive snaps and could be a value play this year but the team did bring in Jelani Jenkins this week, although he has looked washed up for quite a while now.

Vincent Rey finished with 11 tackles on just 77% of the snaps for the Bengals and always performs well when given the opportunity but his opportunity will be short lived once Vontaze Burfict returns from suspension.

All preseason long I tried to figure out how the Saints linebacker situation would play out and I eventually gave up. Well, week one saw A.J. Klein play 100% of the snaps, the only non-secondary player to do so. Alex Anzalone played the second most snaps with 48 of 65, Craig Robertson played 17 of 65 and Manti Te’o played 16 of 65. If week one is any indication, Klein and Anzalone are the buys here but both tend to get banged up so hedge your bets where possible.

I’m not going to go through this whole list but, my God, Jacksonville unleashed some biblical vengeance on their division rival Houston Texans. Calais Campbell has always been a beast but this defense might let him morph into an out-of-this-world super stud. His first half performance was insane as he collected 3.5 sacks before rounding it out with four total. I can’t wait to see how he finishes 2017.

I have had a bit of a man crush on Yannick Ngakoue and seeing him pop off two sacks turned that crush into a lust. He might not be the most consistent IDP player but few are on the defensive line. Lerentee McCray, who even I haven’t heard of, chipped in 1.5 sacks on just six snaps for the Jags. In the words of Denny Green, “they are who we thought they were”.
