Devy Stock Market: Week Four

The fantasy football stock market is constantly fluctuating and it is always important for us to know which players have a price that has become exploitable whether it be to buy or sell. Pieces like this one have been fairly commonplace in the industry for a while in both redraft and dynasty, but I will be focusing on college players for devy dynasty leagues and how their week-to-week performances are affecting their price in those leagues.

Stock Up

Leonard Fournette, RB LSU

It is hard for the stock of a guy who was going 1.01 in devy drafts before he played a snap in college football to go up, but the stock of Leonard Fournette continues to trend upward. Through three games, Fournette has 47 carries for 387 carries and six touchdowns. Last weekend, Fournette made a solid Auburn defense look silly with 19 carries for 228 yards and three touchdowns. He is truly living up to the pre-college hype and then some.

Verdict: Hold. His owner likely has a death grip on Fournette and is not letting go, especially after his performance so far this season. Side note: In non-Devy leagues, start buying those 2017 first rounders now… Nick Chubb, Dalvin Cook and Fournette are going to be very fun to watch at the next level.

Josh Doctson, WR TCU

Doctson has had a solid start to his final year at TCU. Doctson had an explosive performance against SMU on Saturday with a line of five catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns, good for an impressive 34.2 yards per catch. I expect Doctson to continue to put up similar numbers for the duration of the season.

Verdict: Sell. When college players have a few big games, sometimes owners conveniently (or inconveniently) forget a player’s detractions. One of the big issues with Doctson is his age. He will be 23 in December per the DLF database. Rotoviz’s Jon Moore has done a lot on player age showing older players entering the NFL are less likely to have success.

CJ Prosise, RB Notre Dame

CJ Prosise only had 10 carries entering his senior season, so he likely wasn’t on too many people’s radar entering the season, but he should be now. He has had 98+ rushing yards in each of Notre Dame’s first three games and he had an impressive performance on Saturday with 22 carries for 198 yards and three touchdowns. With Notre Dame using him as a feature back, I expect his stock will likely continue to rise as the season progresses.

Verdict: Hold/Sell. I’m usually leery of these last year/senior type breakouts. If you had him rostered in a very deep devy league, now may be time to cash out. If he isn’t rostered, he is a guy to monitor as the season progresses in devy and normal dynasty leagues.

Stock Down

Jeremy Johnson, QB Auburn

Johnson was one of the favorites to win the Heisman trophy about a month ago. On Tuesday, it was announced he was benched in favor of Sean White. The junior quarterback hasn’t been able to find the magic he had last season and he has thrown six interceptions in three games and put up a not-so-good line of 10-19 for 100 yards in a loss against LSU on Saturday.

Verdict: Sell. The list of quarterbacks who were benched in college and went on to have successful NFL careers is fairly short. You likely won’t be able to get much for Johnson, so owners may just be stuck holding here.

Corey Clement, RB Wisconsin

Clement has had a disappointing start to the season with a subpar line of eight rushes for 16 yards against Alabama, followed by a groin injury forcing him to miss the first two weeks. The timetable for Clement is even worse now as it was announced he’d miss the next several weeks due to a sports hernia. Hopefully, at some point this season, he will return to 2014 form and return to being one of the better running back prospects eligible for the 2015 draft.

Verdict: Buy. If owners are panicking off of one game and an injury, now is the time to pounce. I still think Clement is a very talented back and he isn’t just a product of the Wisconsin offensive line.

South Carolina Gamecock Offense

Normally as a devy player, you don’t pay much attention to team win/loss records or even teams as a whole, but the Gamecocks have struggled out the gate so far this season. Pharoh Cooper is the main devy name here, and his struggles, averaging 50.33 receiving yards, can mainly be attributed to the Gamecocks’ quarterbacks and their 51.3% completion percentage.

The Gamecocks are already on their third starting quarterback in four games with dual threat quarterback Lorenzo Nunez. We will see if that helps fix the woes of the Syeve Spurrier offense so far this season.

Verdict: Buy Pharoh Cooper. When good players are on bad teams and it depresses their numbers, it provides a buy low window. The change at quarterback could also be a good thing for the South Carolina running backs. A dual threat quarterback makes it easier for running backs to find open space, good news for the trio of Brandon Wilds, Shon Carson and David Williams, with Wilds being the main one to keep an eye on from a devy perspective.
