Rookie running back DeWayne McBride was signed to the Vikings practice squad
The move was fully expected and the only question was whether or not the first-year player would go unclaimed following his release. McBride scored two touchdowns in the preseason but would have been buried on the depth chart. In fact, following his release, the team signed veteran Myles Gaskin to round out the running back room. McBride profiles well to the NFL but lacks significant upside dynamic and will need a combination of time and opportunity to get a chance to produce in the future. He's listed as DLF's RB86.

Vikings rookie running back DeWayne McBride is not projected to make the Viking's 53-man roster
Interestingly enough, a free agent signing is projected above all current backs not named Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler, with the belief that McBride is destined for the practice squad. It would seem to be a logical prediction given the number of backs who will soon be on the market following Tuesday's 4:00 PM EST cutdown deadline. McBride profiles well in the NFL but didn't standout significantly enough in the preseason to solidify a roster spot. He's found as DLF's RB85.

The Minnesota Vikings selected UAB running back DeWayne McBride in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.
It was a very disappointing development as he'll have no guarantee to even make the roster. Still, Dalvin Cook is aging and Alexander Mattison is still relatively unproven. He'll likely have to beat out Kene Nwangnu for a roster spot and that's going to be tough as Nwangnu has special teams ability. McBride is a dart throw as a late round rookie pick.

The BackCAST model projects running backs based on successful statistics from the past in order to gauge future success. The gap between McBride and top-overall back Bijan Robinson is huge. In fact, McBride's score places him firmly in fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. McBride's BackCAST score is pushed higher almost solely due to YPC. average (7.3) though he also does possess good size. Beyond that, lack of agility, uninspiring long speed and very little work as a receiver will tamp down his value in both the NFL Draft and dynasty rookie drafts to follow.
