It was American author Zig Ziglar who stated, “The first step in solving a problem is to recognize that it does exist.”

Mr. Ziglar’s quote perfectly describes the yearly NFL Draft process; teams recognize their weaknesses in both the short and long term while picking collegiate players to fill those holes.

On the surface, the teams encompassing the AFC North added a collection of top skill players who will factor into the fantasy football landscape. Yet, two of these teams failed to address the root cause of their problems, which could spell trouble for their dynasty assets.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

WINNER – Joe Burrow, QB

The Bengals’ franchise quarterback is more than thrilled to reunite with collegiate teammate Ja’Marr Chase after the pair produced 1,780 receiving yards, 20 touchdowns, and a national championship in 2019 for LSU. Chase enters a wide receiver room with Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd giving the Bengals one of the most talented trios of pass-catchers in the entire league.

Burrow was QB14 through nine games last season before a torn ACL cost him the remainder of his rookie campaign. Granted he fully recovers from the aforementioned injury, the former Heisman Trophy winner is a guaranteed QB1 with top-five upside in 2021.

WINNER – Joe Mixon, RB

According to scientists; cockroaches, scorpions, and Joe Mixon’s dynasty value could survive a nuclear event. The 2020 season was more than frustrating for dynasty GMs with roster shares of the Cincinnati running back. After a foot injury in week six, the former Sooner didn’t play a single snap the rest of the season following a three-week IR stint and being in questionable limbo thereafter.

The Bengals not only passed on spending significant draft capital at the position (sorry not sorry, but Chris Evans in the sixth round does not count), but they released veteran third-down back Giovani Bernard. There are quite simply 19 million reasons the franchise remains committed to Mixon as his dead cap number is $11 and over $8 million in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

""

There are two ways to view Mixon entering into 2021; as a potential three-down, workhorse back on what could be a dynamic offense OR as an oft-injured player who will never stay healthy enough to live up to the off-season hype. If I have a contending dynasty squad, I’m more willing to shoulder the risk of rostering the Bengal ball carrier. Yet, any rebuilding squad with Mixon on its roster should trade him immediately before another foot injury depresses his value even more.

LOSERS – Tyler Boyd, WR and/or Tee Higgins, WR

""

The Bengals spending the fifth overall pick on Ja’Marr Chase is bad news for the dynasty values of Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. With top-five overall draft capital and game-breaking skills, Chase immediately becomes the alpha of this wide receiving corps. This offense likely cannot support three fantasy wide receivers; therefore, one of these two men is about to slide into the WR3 abyss on the depth chart. The consensus is on Higgins playing on the outside opposite the new rookie receiver and benefiting from drawing the opposition’s weaker cornerback. Yet, I’m not willing to write off Boyd just yet.

Lacking legitimate talent at the tight end position (sorry, CJ Uzomah), look for Chase’s deep threat ability to open up the middle of the field for Boyd out of the slot. The veteran receiver has finished in the top 20 (20th, 9th, 17th) in receptions at his position for the last three seasons. At their respective ADPs, give me Boyd (91) over Higgins (48) any day of the week.

LOSER – Joe Burrow

“But Josh, you already said he was a winner…” Yes, the Bengals adding Burrow’s favorite collegiate receiver gives this aerial attack immense upside. However, it’s who they didn’t select with the fifth pick that’s so problematic.

The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s office could have brought manslaughter charges against the Cincinnati offensive line last season. The unit came close to getting their rookie signal caller killed the first nine games before succeeding in the tenth. The franchise passing on a potential franchise left tackle in Penei Sewell could come back to haunt them if former first round pick Jonah Williams continues to struggle. Let’s hope Burrow hasn’t lost any athleticism following his injury as he’ll likely be running for his life in the pocket once again this season.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

LOSERS – Benny Snell Jr., RB; Anthony McFarland Jr., RB; Jaylen Samuels, RB

Let’s keep this short and sweet; from the moment Najee Harris steps into the Steelers facility, he’s the unquestioned starting running back on the team. Mike Tomlin will spew some coachspeak about Harris having to “earn his spot,” but the three players mentioned above are competing to be the rookie’s backup.

LOSERS – Entire Pittsburgh Offense

As rosters stand, do the Steelers currently have the NFL's shakiest offensive line? I think you can make the case:

LT Chukwuma Okorafor
LG Kevin Dotson
C Kendrick Green (R)
RG David DeCastro
RT Zach Banner

Only 2 OL on the roster played 340+ snaps last season.
