The full quote was "I love Sammy and love what he does for our offense. It will be a lot more challenging to retain him and bring him back this year just because of where we are. We were able to work with him and his agent last year and make it work. This year will probably be even more difficult just because we'll have some work to do to get under the cap, and once we do, we have to see where the markets go." Read that as there's little chance Watkins returns to the team unless he's willing to do so on a very cheap and short-term deal. Even then, there's enough free-agent talent available for the team to fill open spots at the position.
Watkins has only played in 10-of-16 games in two of the past three seasons, most recently producing a 37/421/2 line in 2020. Still only 27 and dynamic when healthy, he just hasn't shown the ability to be productive or durable, only once producing a 16-game season, in his 2014 rookie year. Look for Watkins, DLF's WR67, to be on the move in 2021, signing a short term prove-it deal as a depth-chart asset.
