This move is hardly shocking as Newton has simply been unable to recover from his Lisfranc injury he sustained in the preseason. Kyle Allen will now get an extended look as the Panthers starter and could have a legitimate chance to keep the job beyond this year. As for Newton, this is clearly going to put his future with the franchise in serious doubt. The Panthers would save $19.1 million by releasing him and only carry $2 million in dead money with that release or even a trade. Newton has simply never been the same since his MVP season and could always make up for a lack of accuracy with his strength and mobility. With the elusiveness he once had now zapped by injuries, it's fair to wonder just what his future holds as he's never been successful as a pure drop back passer. Newton is currently our QB14, but that seems quite generous at the moment and is sure to drop now.
