Dynasty Film Review: Ladd McConkey, Xavier Worthy and Malik Washington

Bruce Matson

We are rolling into week 12 and we are almost in the fantasy playoffs. There are some young wide receivers who are seeing more work due to us heading toward the backend of the season. This is an important time to pay attention to the rookies who have been all over the place in terms of production because they might get some added chances to prove themselves down the stretch.

Ladd McConkey, WR LAC

McConkey is one of the best route runners in the 2024 NFL Draft class. His running route was on display in week 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was cooking defensive backs with nuance routes. This led to him seeing nine targets for a 27.3 percent target share and 18.3 PPR fantasy points.

In the play documented above we get to see in detail how nuanced McConkey’s route running is. Off the release we see him sell the outside with his feet, eyes, and head movement before breaking to the inside.

From there we break up the field and then sell outside before breaking to the inside. Usually, this is the spot where a wide receiver will earn the target. McConkey wasn’t done cooking.

He then decided to drop his anchor look toward the sideline and head back toward the opposite direction. He earns more than enough separation to gain the target.

McConkey beat this defensive back three times on this route. Off the release, the in break, and finally off the final break to the outside.

The Chargers have a very interesting offense. They are able to hang with just about any team in the NFL. Quentin Johnston has emerged as a playmaker. McConkey is the security blanked out of the slot. In week 11 he ran 83.8 percent of snaps in the slot. We’re watching him develop for the NFL game every week.

He currently has one WR1 and three WR2 performances. Unfortunately, he scored less than ten fantasy points in five games. The nature of the offense will make him a highly volatile fantasy asset. There are games where the Chargers won’t have enough pass attempts to fuel multiple receivers in fantasy.

I think he has flashed enough to feel good about in dynasty. We should see his value increase to a degree in the off-season. Dynasty gamers will look at his 12.9 points per game while forecasting future production. There’s a lot of talent in the 2025 NFL Draft class, and he shouldn’t be overly expensive in trades and there should be some liquidity in the dynasty trade market.

Xavier Worthy, WR KC

It’s been an up-and-down season in terms of fantasy productions for Worthy. He’s a player you hate to start but hate to bench. He’s a Pepto Bismol player. In week 11 he scored 16.8 PPR fantasy points on a lot of fantasy managers’ benches.

Part of the reason why he’s been highly volatile this season is the ball is flowing in all different directions. DeAndre Hopkins and Travis Kelce combined for a 45 percent target share in the last three games. Kareem Hunt has seen games where the passing volume increases.

He’s also a rookie and not a Malik Nabers type of talent. Expecting him to instantly grab a 25-30 percent target share even with Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown out of the picture is a tough ask.

The play above reminds me of what his speed and burst can do on the field. When given space he’s a threat to score. Here they put him in motion and give him a short pass with plenty of green in front of him. The defender is in motion to make the play but Worthy’s speed is too much. The defender also doesn’t take the appropriate pursuit angle to track down a wide receiver with 4.2 speed.

Worthy with more development might benefit more with Rice back in the offense. Defenses will have more of a pick-your-poison scenario, allowing him to capitalize on busted plays. He will still be a Pepto Bismol wide receiver due to the high volatility.

You can make the case that should be happening right now, but DeAndre Hopkins ran a 54 percent route participation rate, and his highest route participation rate was 68.6 percent in week nine. When you figure out his skill level, this is an indicator that there’s room for growth for him to carve out more

Dynasty gamers are looking at a young wide receiver who has flashed a little bit on the field. He has managed to run a 68 percent route participation rate or higher in every game this season. Worthy is not seeing his work rate reduced. He has three games where he scored in the top 20 among wide receivers in PPR fantasy scoring. There’s room for growth in the offense and the fact he hasn’t face-planted is an encouraging sign for a wide receiver who has immense upside who plays in an offense with immense upside.

Malik Washington, WR MIA

Of course, Washington hasn’t been a huge fantasy contributor this season. With the injuries at quarterback for the Dolphins and Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle being the volume hogs in the passing game, it’s hard for a young late-round pick to emerge in this offense.

Washington generated a lot of buzz leading in the NFL Draft. He was very productive at Virginia last year catching 110 passes for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns. In the 2024 NFL Draft, he fell to the sixth round to the Miami Dolphins and we have been watching to see if he will earn more opportunities on the field.

Above are the results of all three of his targets. The Dolphins are taking a look under the hood with Washington. They are trying to get him some experience on the field. This is very encouraging for a late-round pick because most late-round rookies don’t get this treatment. Sometimes you have to look at the little things for what they are and not take them for granted. Even though they are quick short targets there are still opportunities for him to prove himself. His snap rates over the last three games have been 34 percent or higher. Not a huge number but we are getting some work.

Prospecting out for dynasty fantasy football. This is a penny stock with a strong collegiate profile who is starting to see some work in the field. I refer to him as a penny stock because the value is so low he can be considered a buy or a player to just ignore. There are a lot of unforeseen factors that could impact his value either way over the next way. He’s a player that’s cheap that you might pick up to see if you can gain steam with. Like a meme coin, you throw a few dollars on just in case it goes parabolic.
