Each week throughout the 2024 NFL season, I’ll cover two rookies in the Rookie Report Card and will generally write about the most prominent performers from that particular week. I’ll discuss how well he’s lived up to expectations at the NFL level and then grade the player in three categories: performance to date, rookie season potential, and long-term upside.
Week 8 stats: 6 receptions on 6 targets for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Ladd McConkey exploded in week eight, amassing nearly 30% of his season total yardage against the Saints. He saw a season-high total in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, despite being tied for his second fewest targets on the season. Heading into week nine, McConkey has emerged as the Chargers' top weapon in the passing game, leading the team in all receiving categories.
During McConkey's redshirt freshman year, he was second among the National Champion Georgia team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns- only behind Brock Bowers, while outperforming fellow NFL receivers Adonai Mitchell and Jermaine Burton on the same team. He followed up that performance with more of the same as a sophomore, winning a second National Championship while tied for the team lead in touchdowns and again only trailing Bowers in receptions and yardage. As a junior, he regressed on the stat sheet, primarily due to McConkey sustaining back and ankle injuries.
