Davante Adams traded to the Jets: The Dynasty Fantasy Football Impact

Ken Kelly

After nearly a year of speculation and a few weeks of real turmoil, wide receiver Davante Adams has finally been traded and, as expected, he’s now on his way to the New York Jets. Compensation for Las Vegas ends up being a third round pick that can turn into a second rounder should Adams reach certain benchmarks with New York.  After a much publicized spat with new Head Coach Antonio Pierce, Adams finally made it clear he wanted out of Sin City and got his wish this morning. The trade is a big one in the NFL and in dynasty circles as well, so let’s take a look at some players whose values just changed.

Davante Adams, WR NYJ

When Derek Carr left the Raiders and joined the Saints and Aaron Rodgers subsequently signed with the Jets, it seemed every week brought us a new rumor about Adams being sent somewhere. To his credit, Adams was adamant in his desire to stay with the Raiders for a long while, despite what looked like a rebuilding team going nowhere any time soon. However, things changed a few weeks ago when his coach seemed to like a social media post asking if Adams had played his last game with the Raiders, which coincided with Pierce also questioning the effort of his players. Adams has been nursing an injury the past few weeks, one that may magically heal in time for him to play this week. In the end, things just reached a boiling point that wasn’t going to be fixed.

Regardless, Adams is now a New York Jet and gets another fresh start. During his time with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, Adams posted 622 catches, 7,590 receiving yards, and 69 touchdowns over eight seasons, becoming one of fantasy football’s greatest weapons in the process. However, he’s now 31 years old and A-Rod is 40. Expecting elite-level WR1 numbers as if both have jumped into a 1984 DeLorean could be a bit of a stretch. Adams is likely to step into a featured role and catching passes from Rodgers is likely better than doing so from Aidan O’Connell, so this won’t hurt. In the end, Adams is likely going to be a top-15 wide receiver moving forward and is a good trade target for a contending team looking to siphon the last year or two of solid value out of him. His ADP will likely rise a touch with the trade, but fantasy managers may overreact a bit.

Garrett Wilson, WR NYJ

Rodgers is being reunited with his former WR1 in Green Bay and Wilson could be in line for a decrease in targets moving forward as a result. However, dynasty managers really shouldn’t panic as Wilson and Rodgers have quickly built a rapport of their own and while his targets may decrease, he may also find some more room to roam with Adams commanding some attention on the other side. Regardless, while this could impact him short-term, Wilson’s long-term dynasty future is very bright. He was off to a solid start this season and somehow posted 1,000 yards the past two seasons in situations much worse than this one. He’ll likely be a WR2 the rest of the way this season, but should be a solid one at the same time. Savvy managers playing the long game will pounce on him should he become available at a reduced rate.

Other Jets pass catchers

This list includes the likes of Mike Williams, Allen Lazard, Tyler Conklin, Xavier Gipson and Malachi Corley. Williams is clearly in the doghouse and his dynasty value is sinking like the Titanic. He just can’t stay healthy and productive and that’s continued outside of Los Angeles. Lazard is likely the big loser in the trade as he was becoming a player who was lineup-worthy and it’s hard to see that continuing now. There was a time when Rodgers could make three receivers fantasy relevant, but this likely isn’t it. Conklin has carved out a decent season so far and that could continue as a safety valve. As for Gipson and Corley, Rodgers is traditionally hard on young players and it’s hard to see either of them getting much of a chance any time soon.

Aaron Rodgers, QB NYJ

Having your favorite pass catcher back is never a bad thing, but it’s fair to wonder just what A-Rod has left in the tank. His mobility isn’t the same and we just haven’t seen the kind of magic with the Jets we’re accustomed to seeing during his time with Green Bay. After all, the Jets have had the ball at the end of the game with a chance to win in three straight weeks and failed every time. While that’s not all on Rodgers, he doesn’t look like an elite-level fantasy option any longer. He should be considered a QB2 at the moment until we see this offense start to roll…if we ever do.

Jets Running Backs

I highly doubt this really does much to stop the Jets from trying to get Breece Hall going and Braelon Allen is still going to be involved – there’s no need to panic here.

Aidan O’Connell, QB LV

Losing your best weapon is never a good thing, but it’s hard to look at O’Connell (or Gardner Minshew) and believe the Raiders aren’t going to be in the market for a quarterback via trade this year (if they’re not waving the white flag already) or through the 2025 NFL Draft. O’Connell has some dynasty value as a starter, but he’s going to need to string together some really good games to keep this job long-term and losing Adams won’t help that cause.

Brock Bowers, TE LV

The record for receptions for a rookie tight end is 86 by Sam LaPorta just last year. With Adams gone and Bowers already at 37 catches through six games, I believe that record is in real jeopardy now. If Bowers stays healthy, he’s going to get peppered with targets each and every week. It really is the perfect storm – the Raiders have a lack of pass catchers, a conservative offense, no real running game, and one truly elite player now and it’s  Bowers. This is going to get fun for anyone who has him and he’s as locked into dynasty lineups as anyone at this point.

Jakobi Meyers, WR LV

Meyers could be the other real winner here. His career highs are 83 catches and 866 receiving yards. While touchdowns are hard to predict, both of those personal highs could be broken this season should Meyers emerge as their most targeted wide receiver, as expected. He’s likely going to be a WR2/3 moving forward, but this isn’t a bad thing for his short-term value moving forward.

Other Raiders Pass Catchers

This list includes Tre Tucker and DJ Turner, among others. Tucker had a golden opportunity to shine this week and failed miserably, though he’s shown some upside. He belongs on dynasty rosters. Outside of that, it’s hard to see O’Connell carving out value for Bowers, Meyers, and third player on a consistent basis.

Raiders Running Backs

Zamir White has been one of the biggest disappointments of the fantasy season and Alexander Mattison just looks like a better option moving forward. In the end, both are going to be tough to trust, regardless of a few more opportunities.
