Dynasty IDP Waiver Wire: Week Six

Tim Riordan

Week five was a D/ST scoring bonanza! The 49ers, Vikings, Giants, Broncos, Seahawks, and Rams all found the end zone on the defensive and special teams side of the ball. That’s not to mention six teams going for four or more sacks, including seven by the Commanders against the Browns and the Giants against the Seahawks. The Vikings and Broncos racked up three interceptions and the Bears recovered multiple fumbles.

We focus on tackles more often than not in this waiver wire article because, for the most part, those are the easiest to project from week to week. Touchdowns, fumble recoveries, interceptions and even sacks can be tough to project and flukey, but they can completely flip the script in the IDP fantasy football format. Despite all of this, none of the week five touchdown scorers will be featured in this piece. Most of them are too highly-rostered to qualify. Deommodore Lenoir could qualify for this list, but his touchdown was the flukiest and it came on special teams. He does see a lot of game action in the 49ers defensive backfield, but he hasn’t made an IDP impact outside of this week’s touchdown return.

As a reminder, these waiver wire suggestions are based on dynasty leagues that start seven defensive players, two at each position group and a flex. Some players profiled will be for deeper leagues, and others for more shallow leagues, but with no standard format for IDP leagues, we need to cast a wide net. I’ll be using roster percentage data from Sleeper.

Defensive Linemen

Derick Hall, DE SEA, 19%

This is the third straight week Hall has been listed in the IDP waiver wire article. He continues to make big plays, getting to the quarterback and he’s adding up tackles along the way. The Seahawks front seven has fought with injuries this season, but they are starting to get healthy. Boye Mafe was able to get back to practice this week, and if he plays next week, it could be curtains for Hall’s IDP value. But, with sacks in four out of five games, and two forced fumbles in the last three games, Hall has earned more playing time in the Seahawks defense.

Chauncey Golston, DE DAL, 4% or Carl Lawson, DE DAL, 3%

The Cowboys continue to suffer major injuries to the front seven. With Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence already missing time, they also lost promising rookie Marshawn Kneeland early in Sunday night’s game. Golston was already playing a fill-in role for America’s team, while Lawson came off the bench to cover for Kneeland. Tyrus Wheat is another player who will rotate in on the defensive line who may be worth a pickup.

Logan Hall, DL TB, 5%

Hall was an animal attacking Kirk Cousins on Thursday Night Football last week. He hit the quarterback five times and recorded two sacks. He’s now had three sacks in the past two weeks, beating out his career-high. Hall also played 58 snaps on Thursday, a career-high. The third-year pro may be a bit boom-or-bust because almost all of his fantasy points have come on sacks this season.

Kobie Turner, DL LAR, 26%

Turner had an incredible game on Sunday, getting six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in the loss to the Packers. It was the best performance of his career, and that’s after he got nine sacks last year in his rookie campaign. Turner is young and ascending in this league and he’s seeing plenty of snaps in the middle of the Rams defensive line. The Rams are trying to replace Aaron Donald this year, and Turner is off to a decent start.

Dorance Armstrong, DE WAS, 12%

For the third straight week, Armstrong got a piece of a sack on Sunday, this time getting to Deshaun Watson once. He’s now up to three sacks on the season, all of them coming over the past three weeks. He isn’t a full-time player, but it’ll be interesting to see what his snap share was in week five.

Others Players to Consider: Pat Jones, DE MIN, 33%; Yaya Diaby, DE TB, 21%; Emmanuel Ogbah, DE MIA, 8%; Braden Fiske, DT LAR, 30%

Linebackers

Dorian Williams, LB BUF, 36%

I usually try to keep my suggestions to 35% or below, but Williams should be on much more rosters around IDP fantasy leagues. He’s gotten double-digit tackles or a big play in every single game this season, including 11 total tackles and a fumble recovery this week against the Texans. Coming into this game, Williams had a 20.3% tackle efficiency, totaling 40 tackles on only 197 snaps (as Tom Kislingbury highlighted in his outstanding Ten IDP Stats to Know article from last week). He played 53 snaps this week, or 77.9% of the snaps.

Trevin Wallace, LB CAR, 28%

With Josey Jewell out once again, and Shaq Thompson on IR, Wallace started this week for the Panthers and played all 74 snaps. He took advantage, racking up 15 total tackles, tied for the most at LB this week. If Jewell comes back next week, he’ll likely take the green dot and play 100% of the snaps, but Wallace has earned a role for Carolina after this performance.

DeMarvion Overshown, LB DAL, 28%

We’ve covered the injury woes for the Cowboys already here, but Overshown isn’t necessarily an injury replacement. If you hadn’t heard his name before, you likely did on Sunday Night, when Cris Collinsworth waxed poetic about Overshown, and compared him to TJ Watt.

Overshown has been impressive, but with only one career sack, I’d hesitate to start comparing him to Watt. But, he’s certainly been a factor in the Cowboys defense and has started to turn heads. It hasn’t translated to much IDP value yet, but the way the Cowboys are talking him up, it may just be a matter of time. The second-year linebacker could be worth a stash in dynasty leagues, and may even be worth a start next week against the run-heavy Detroit Lions.

Cody Barton, LB DEN, 30% or Justin Strnad, LB DEN, 5%

With Alex Singleton out for the season, Barton and Strnad will hold down the second level of the Broncos’ defense for the time being. The Broncos offense has struggled to stay on the field, but the defense has been really impressive through the first quarter of the season.

Other Players to Consider: Devin Bush, LB CLE, 12%; Ventrell Miller, LB JAC, 12%; De’Vondre Campbell, LB SF, 28%; Troy Dye, LB LAC, 3%; Jamien Sherwood, LB NYJ, 11%;

Defensive Backs

Tykee Smith, S TB, 8%

Smith had the best game of his rookie season on Thursday night against the Falcons. He played 86 defensive snaps and got 11 total tackles and one forced fumble. It was a huge ramp-up for Smith, who previously played his most snaps in week two, 57 of them. It was also his first big play with the forced fumble. The Bucs play the Saints next week, who can target their slot receivers aggressively if the matchup is right.

Montaric Brown, CB JAC, 10%

Brown has already accumulated a career-high 37 total tackles, and he’s only played in four full games. He’s been playing on the outside this season while Tyson Campbell is on IR. If and when Campbell comes back, we may not see as much usage from Brown, but in deep leagues, he’s worth an add, and probably a start depending on your league format.

Cam Lewis, S BUF, 5%

Lewis entered this week’s game leading all safeties with 27 targets thrown his way, six targets more than anyone else in the league (hat-tip once again to Tom Kislingbury’s Ten IDP Stats to Know article from last week). Lewis is a nickleback/box safety who mostly covers the slot receivers on the opposing team, and opposing teams have taken advantage. He’s had at least six total tackles in each of the past three games, and he should continue to see plenty of those while Taron Johnson remains sidelined. Johnson did return to practice this week, so it’ll be worth following the practice reports as the week goes on.

Other Players to Consider: DeShon Elliott, S PIT, 32%; Tyler Nubin, S NYG, 34%; Xavier Woods, S CAR, 11%; Deommodore Lenoir, CB SF, 22%; Evan Williams, S GB, 3%
