Roster Cutdown Day: A DLF Dynasty Fantasy Football Impact Blog

Ken Kelly

It’s an important day in the NFL and for dynasty managers all over the world. Today, we learn what teams really think of some rookies and veterans on their rosters as they have to make the painful moves necessary to get down to the required 53 players on their roster. These moves will have impact in dynasty leagues, so we’ll bring you the news as it comes out. As always, keep yourself posted on our Player News Page for all the latest updates as well.

INJURY UPDATES

  • Chase Edmonds will miss the entire season for Tampa Bay. This is a very bad sign for his dynasty value as he’s unlikely to ever make an impact again.
  • Rakim Jarrett of the Bucs will also miss the season. He’s certainly a drop candidate in dynasty leagues.
  • Jonathon Brooks will remain on the PUP list. This is no surprise as he rehabs a torn ACL. He still makes for a solid rookie pick and should make a solid late-season impact.
  • Keaton Mitchell will also remain on the PUP list. He was fantastic last season but may have a hard time making an impact in Baltimore until 2025.
  • TJ Hockenson will remain on the PUP list in Minnesota. He’s slated to return in the middle of the season but dynasty owners will need a fallback plan with a veteran tight end in the interim. Plan accordingly.
  • Nyheim Hines will join Nick Chubb on the Browns PUP list. This leaves Jerome Ford and D’Onta Foreman as prime Zero RB targets for late drafters.
  • Kendrick Bourne wasn’t quite ready to be back and will also remain on the PUP list in New England. He should make a solid contribution later in the year, making him roster worthy in deep leagues.
  • Tyler Higbee is still on the PUP list for the Rams. He seems far away from contributing and honestly hasn’t done much lately in terms of contributing when he’s on the field. He’s cut worthy as well.
  • Jelani Woods has been placed on season-ended IR. This is brutal for his dynasty prospects as injuries have completely derailed his career.
  • Kendre Miller has been placed on IR by the Saints. He’ll be designated to return possibly but New Orleans is clearly not happy with where he’s at. He’s still roster worthy but barely.
Odell Beckham Jr will start the season on the PUP list. At this point, we’re going to see him being released off a lot of dynasty rosters.
  • AJ Dillon is out for the season and has been placed on season-ending injured reserve.  MarShawn Lloyd may have the inside track to back him up but Jacobs is in line for a monster workload. As for Dillon, this is going to be a tough time to justify keeping him on a dynasty roster.
  • Elijah Mitchell has been placed on season-ending IR and that makes Jordan Mason a must-add.

ROYCE FREEMAN AND MALIK DAVIS OUT IN DALLAS

Freeman looked to have an inside track at a job but ended up being cut along with Malik Davis in favor of both Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn. With Dalvin Cook also a possibility of being signed after his visit this week, this depth chart looks like a bit of a mess. Freeman is starting to run out of chances, despite performing relatively well when he’s had chances. As for Davis, he remains intriguing should he land on a roster with a hole at the position.

MICHAEL CARTER LOOKING FOR WORK

The fact Emari Demercado is on the initial 53 for Arizona is a bad sign for Carter’s future for sure. It also means Trey Benson is the clear handcuff to James Conner moving into the season. Carter could land on his feet as a third down or change-of-pace back somewhere but he’s way off the dynasty radar at this point.

KYLE PHILIPS FAILS TO MAKE THE TITANS

Philips has just not panned out for the Titans, despite having multiple opportunities. He battled a hamstring injury and could wind up on another team but his dynasty shine is clearly dimming and it’s hard to make a case for keeping him on a dynasty roster.

ROBERT TONYAN CUT AGAIN

This is a bad sign for Tonyan’s career considering TJ Hockenson is still out with an injury. Tonyan had a great stretch with the Packers early in his career but he just hasn’t been able to rekindle that magic over the past few years. He looks like dynasty waiver wire fodder at the moment.

SAMAJE PERINE AND TIM PATRICK CUT BY DENVER

This comes as no surprise as reports circulated yesterday indicating Perine and Patrick were both on the trade block. It’s also notable the Broncos kept four running backs – Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, and Blake Watson. Perine himself should have little problem landing a backup job but he’s a hard sell as a dynasty asset. Patrick is reportedly signing with Detroit and planning on spending time on their practice squad with the expectation he gets called up when he’s up to speed on the playbook. Neither player look very desirable on a dynasty team at the moment.

CHRIS RODRIGUEZ JR OUT IN WASHINGTON

Rodriguez had some nice moments last year but was caught up in a numbers game after Washington traded for Austin Ekeler and was subsequently cut today. With much of the “deep sleeper” bloom off the rose now with his release, it’s going to be tough for dynasty managers to hold on to Rodriguez.

KADARIUS TONEY RELEASED BY KANSAS CITY

The Chiefs really tried to make it work with Toney but he’s proven to be more trouble than he’s worth. There’s really no doubting the talent here but Toney has also proven to be unreliable both on and off the field. Someone will certainly take a shot at him in the coming days, making him still a hold in deep dynasty leagues until we see the smoke clear.

IRV SMITH CUT BY CHIEFS

Smith is having a hard time sticking in the league after what amounts to failed stops in Cincinnati and now Kansas City. Once a highly regarded prospect with the Vikings, Smith may be running out chances in the NFL. He’s not a roster worthy stash at tight end after this move.

KJ HAMLER CUT IN BUFFALO

The Bills tried everything they could to make this work (even trying Hamer at running back) but it just didn’t work out in the end. Hamler was a former second round pick of the Broncos and has had a hard time staying healthy and showing any form of consistency. He may emerge as an option elsewhere but this isn’t good for his dynasty value.

MAC JONES WINS BACKUP JOB IN JACKSONVILLE

CJ Beathard was waived with an injury settlement, so Jones gets to be Trevor Lawrence’s backup. This was a close battle but a late preseason injury to Beathard pretty much sealed the deal. Jones will now look to continue his development behind Lawrence and hope for a shot as a starter again elsewhere. The former first rounder is a tough hold on a dynasty roster, however.

TERRACE MARSHALL RELEASED BY CAROLINA

Marshall had a good camp by all accounts but the Panthers have clearly soured on their 2021 second round pick. He has clear talent but has simply never really put it all together so far in his career. He was a popular trade candidate going into cutdowns so it seems logical he’ll land on his feet quickly. A fresh start was needed here, so Marshall can stay on a dynasty roster at the moment.

ANDY ISABELLA RELEASED BY BUFFALO

Isabella has been a deep dynasty league roster staple for years but has never really put it all together. He may end up latching on somewhere else but the fact he couldn’t make it on to a roster this thin at receiver is a bad sign for his career.

NOAH BROWN RELEASED BY HOUSTON

Brown had a dynasty cup of coffee last year when he posted 325 receiving yards and a touchdown in the span of two weeks. Unfortunately, the rest of his season yielded just 242 yards and one other score. Brown has shown some flashes and should land on his feet somewhere. This move makes it unlikely the Texans move on from John Metchie via trade as well. Brown can stay on a deep dynasty roster until we see where he may end up.

MARTAVIS BRYANT RELEASED BY WASHINGTON

Bryant was hoping to ignite a comeback story with the Commanders after missing the last few years after a multitude of suspensions. It clearly was not meant to be as he would have to really impress for a team to trust him moving forward. Bryant may get another chance somewhere but at this point, that seems a bit unlikely. He has no dynasty value at this point.

BRETT RYPIEN RELEASED BY CHICAGO

Rypien actually played quite well this preseason but apparently wasn’t able to overtake Tyson Bagent as the backup to Caleb Williams. He should find some quick work as a backup somewhere in the coming days based on how he’s played, though he may need to settle for a practice squad spot if he can’t find what he wants. Regardless, Rypien has no dynasty value at the moment.

JAMES ROBINSON RELEASED BY NEW ORLEANS

Robinson simply isn’t the same player he once was in Jacksonville after his torn Achilles. Now having spent time with five different teams over the past two years, it’s hard to see this as anything but a possible end to a career that once very promising. Robinson can safely be released from any deep dynasty rosters.

JOHN ROSS RELEASED BY PHILADELPHIA

The former Cincinnati first round pick was attempting a comeback with the Eagles but didn’t quite do enough to stick. Once the NFL’s fastest man, Ross has simply been a bust during his time in the NFL. He may get a chance on a practice squad or get a call up as an injury replacement but he doesn’t belong on a dynasty roster.

BAILEY ZAPPE RELEASED BY NEW ENGLAND

Remember when Zappe was outplaying Mac Jones and looked like he could be a future starter for New England? Yep, that seems like light years ago now. Zappe was brought back after final cuts last year but that likely won’t be the case with the Patriots having Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett (now unlikely to be traded with this move) on the roster. It certainly looks like Maye is going to win the job and this may seal it.

ALLEN ROBINSON RELEASED BY THE GIANTS

Robinson ended up lasting just a few months with New York and has clearly lost a step (or more) at this point. He will now look to latch on to his fifth team in four years after stops in Chicago, Los Angeles (Rams), Pittsburgh, and now with the Giants. Robinson simply may be cooked at age 31 and his dynasty value has long since evaporated.

MYLES GASKIN RELEASED BY MINNESOTA

Gaskin was attempting to earn a depth spot with Minnesota but failed to impress throughout camp. Once a fairly productive runner in Miami, Gaskin hasn’t been able to make much of an impression over the last couple of seasons. He could latch on elsewhere but this is a bad sign for his future dynasty value.
