How to Build a Successful Contending Roster

Kevin White

The goal of any dynasty league is to become a true contender on a yearly basis or rebuild in a way that leads you to this pathway. In this two-part series, I’ll be highlighting the key moves to make your good rosters great for contenders and your bad rosters great for rebuilders, through successful roster building.

The first article in the series will focus on building a successful roster for contending dynasty teams.

The Pocket Passer Pivot

As part of the transition to a true contender, making the pivot from the lower ceiling, lower floor, increased volatility pocket passer to another quarterback archetype is recommended. The pocket passer can have strong fantasy seasons with unsustainable efficiency, however the other archetypes have a greater point-scoring potential each week and each season. While the natural attraction is to pivot to a dual-threat quarterback, the cost and value discrepancy between the two archetypes results in the balanced quarterback archetype becoming more attainable. With this in mind, making a move such as trading pocket passer Baker Mayfield for a balanced archetype with rushing upside like Deshaun Watson is a positive move to elevate your QB2 position.
