Lineup Advice & Team Tracking: Week 3

Have a tough lineup decision or need a second opinion? We’re here for you!

PLEASE READ ALL OF EACH WEEK’S POST

Important:  I am traveling internationally from 9/20 – 10/14 meaning that I will NOT be doing the lineup advice for weeks 3 – 6. I am turning that over to Ken Kelly, one of my fellow DLF co-founders and writer of the Aftermath article here on DLF. You can trust Ken to give you good advice and if I ever needed someone to manage my team, he’d be my choice so, you’re in good hands.

Week 3

It was a brutal week with a lot of significant injuries. Offenses are coming around, slowly and things should start normalizing a bit this week. For lineup advice, weeks 1-3 are always the most difficult, especially one and two. Coming out of the preseason, with very vanilla offenses and team’s not wanting to give much/anything away, there’s just little way to determine who will have chemistry, who won’t, what the committees will look like and, generally, who will come out hot and who won’t. We start our studs, we lean into what we “know” and fade what we don’t. I don’t make many/any bold calls this early until we get a pattern of performance. We’re starting to see that now but we still likely have one more week of wide variability.

The Nick Chubb injury was brutal and he joins J.K. Dobbins as being done for the year. We also lost Saquon Barkley for a number of games but it could have been worse. Thankfully, I’ve been on Jerome Ford as a rookie and have him on a number of teams. He’s built for the NFL and I liked his profile quite a bit after scouting him from his days at Cincinnati. I’m hoping the Browns give him the work but they are certain to bring in veteran talent. Kareem Hunt would seem to make sense and it’s not out of the question Cam Akers is in play.

I’m also starting to see cracks in the Patrick Mahomes equation. I’m wondering if the Chiefs have just gone too far in their desire not to address the receiver position and, instead, rely on Mahomes’ greatness to get them back to the Super Bowl. Without the aging Travis Kelce, this receiver corps. looks extremely pedestrian and though Mahomes is certainly a magician, there’s limits to what magic can do. In my estimation, they need that sure-fire WR1 lining up across, from Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney. I still have a belief that Justyn Ross could be that guy but, like the others, he’s young and not established. I was still hoping for DeAndre Hopkins to make the move to Arrowhead.

Looking ahead, I see all sorts of trouble at running back. Just so few options to rely on and this is exactly why I have been prioritizing receivers. I’ve said it ad nauseum over the past 18 mos. and I’m still saying it. A good running back can be the difference between reaching the playoffs in dynasty or not, and be responsible for pushing you over the top, but finding that name is difficult. The actors are easy to target early in the season, but whether or not they remain healthy is another thing entirely. In response, I’ve been loading up on second tier running back talent, starting the maximum number of receivers, and simply plugging in backs until one gets their big break. If that doesn’t occur, I just stream the position for max point potential each week.

Heading into this week’s games, don’t overreact yet. Keep your hands off the trade keyboard unless you have a great offer and simply don’t allow two weeks of non-performance force your hand. It’s still a young season. Give it a couple more weeks before making bigger moves. If you’re an opportunist and clearly a frontrunner, you have my ‘green light’ to swoop in and secure those veteran producers for your projected late-first or second round draft picks.

Team Tracking

Not a lot of tight games this week for me though I did scooch by for a “W” in one league thanks to Deshaun Watson not lighting it up. In another league, one of my favorites, I scored in the top four (14 teams) and lost to the team scoring the most points. It’s been a theme for me in this young season. What I like about this league is that point performance matters more than head-to-head matchup performance. It’s a “Victory Point (VP)”  league where a H2H victory gives you a a single point and scoring in the top four rewards two VPs, scoring in the next six rewards one VP, and zero VPs for being in the last four. So, while lost the matchup, I still earned two VPs for scoring in the top four and I’m still in first place. In this particular league, I happen to have Saquon Barkley, Dalvin Cook and Cooper Kupp so I’m trying to tread water for a couple more weeks.

I mostly play in VP formats now and I really like them because they smooth out the bad-beat occurrences.

9-5 again this week, bringing my record to 18-10.  Could have been better or worse. I only have one 0-2 team and it has surprised me with how bad it has performed. My strong running back room (there’s that position again) has been anything but strong. At least I have Jerome Ford. The season is still young and there’s plenty of time for this young team to turn it around.

To say that losing Nick Chubb in multiple leagues is a blow is an understatement. I now have an eroding foundation of veteran performers on multiple teams such that I have legitimate concerns about their ability to make the playoffs. When an aging veteran goes down, the realization that you will no longer receive any trade value in return sets in. It’s always a concern when you hold those aging production machines, but I remain a firm believer in that those are the horses you ride to championships. When one goes down, however, the impact is real and significant. At some point, you need to understand the reality of your aging team’s likelihood to bring home the trophy. In 2022 I was trading away Josh Allen shares to rebuild where needed and I love what I received in return. This year I have a competing team built upon Aaron Rodgers (oops), Christian McCaffrey, Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, Calvin Ridley, Deebo Samuel and Mike Williams. I’m at a crossroads now with this multiple-time championship winner of a squad.

It’s the game we play and as dynasty managers, we all have to choose how we wish to build our teams and, then, how long we will ride those veterans before rebuilding. I’ve always been one to build slowly beneath my veteran production but sometimes it’s easy to get top-heavy while the youth doesn’t pan out. This team is the perfect example of that. The struggle is real!

Let’s get to the lineup advice!

Lineup Advice Rules & Format

DLF continues to see growth in our membership and each year I continue to wonder how I’m going to keep up with all of your questions while also holding to a level of service and quality you’ve all come to expect from me. I’ve been VERY happy with my level of accuracy but, for that to occur, I need your help. Each question can take up to 10 minutes for me to research as I research up to a dozen different variables and trends. I do everything I can to get my answers correct. For that reason, I need you to read the following rules and guidelines to help me maintain efficiency:

  • Please don’t ask me to set your entire lineup
  • Put “TNF” as the top line for any question involving Thursday Night Football games
  • Please also make sure to tell me who YOU would be starting if not for my advice. It helps me to understand your gut feeling(s).
  • Include your scoring format  (PPR, Non-PPR, etc.)
  • Keep your questions as brief as possible – Story questions add a lot of time
  • I prioritize questions involving the earliest (Thursday, etc.) games first. If I skip over your question, don’t worry, I’ll be back to it.
  • It’s easy to miss responses to my responses in thread. When in doubt, always post a separate new question

Lastly, I work very hard to get my advice correct and I do not mail it in. When I’m wrong, I feel every incorrect answer so, go easy on me! That said, the DLF community has been absolutely fantastic to work with which is why I’m still doing this after so many years.

Have a great week! Have an even better season!

This is just a general question about using the site, hope that’s okay.
There is a big difference in waiver advice articles and rankings when trying to decide how to tweak my team on waiver days.
For instance, last week, Keontay Ingram and Rico Dowdle were listed in the waiver article as “double check and immediately add if available,” but both were also ranked outside of the top 250 overall and unranked by multiple rankers. They weren’t even in the toip 10 available in my league, where free agents like Trey Lance were ranked higher.
Is there a different angle for the waiver article (like short term contributions / high upside stash) or is my league just shallow or has bad owners? Would you reference weekly waiver advice or ongoing rankings when trying to fill out the bottom of your roster week to week?
Thanks in advance.

It’s a great question. Rankings will always lag behind a bit. Some like to see multiple weeks of big performances before moving players up or down while others are more aggressive. I’d follow the articles for the most recent advice as the rankings catch up.

I need 2 RB’s to start out of these 5. PPR format, concerns in parenthesis:
Breece Hall vs NE (Touches)
Brian Robinson vs BUF (BUF could blow out, low usage)
Swift vs TB (Fantastic run D)
Zach Moss vs BAL (Anthony Richardson and BAL D is pretty good)
Jerome Ford vs TEN (Fantastic run D).
Leaning towards starting Robinson and Breece.

It’s Swift and Robinson for me, honestly. The situations lend themselves to nearly guaranteed touches.

Hey Jeff, TNF question. I have Daniel Jones traveling from the East Coast to the Left Coast on a short week. And no Saquon Barkley-I don’t like it at all.
I could roll with Russell Wilson in what will be a shoot out in Miami. Wilson is gonna be forced to chuck it a lot just to stay close.
I have Burrow, but I plan to sit him since he is an iffy Monday night starter.
I am leaning Wilson, but it feels weird. A penny for your thoughts sir.

Boy, that’s close. I’d lean Wilson as it seems Payton is going to simplify the offense a but and Denver is going to need to score points to keep up with Tua and Co.

Experts say Hall for sure and the three total targets Kirk received last week make me want to agree. It’s clear Calvin Ridley has really affected Kirk’s status in Jacksonville.

Loving the approach for RBs now. I couldn’t agree more. Outside of CMC, it seems like most RBs are averaging similar production, despite their dynasty value.
Could you clarify what you mean by second tier of RBs? Are you talking about dynasty RBs ranks from 20-40? I’m trying to understand the grouping a little better.
I’m not sure if this just applies to my league, but one trend I have noticed is that the few elite RBs that are left are becoming even more expensive in my league because supply is so low for elite rbs. I assumed that they would get cheaper because of injuries, but managers are putting their foot down to retain them even more right now. It will be something to monitor over the season and into next year.

I think you’re exactly right, personally. Running back value is becoming more and more similar but the truly elite backs still make a huge difference. You just wish there were more of them!

Welcome to Line Up Advice, Ken!

Let’s get to it!

0.5 PPR. Need one.

RB Javonte Williams at Dolphins
RB Jaylen Warren at Raiders
WR Godwin vs Eagles

I’m leaning Javonte with being the lead back, but I’m afraid of game script. Warren definitely shares time on the lesser side. Godwin has been decent but tough match up again the Eagles, but at least he shouldn’t be seeing double coverage.

Thanks in advance!

Kemo,
TNF
Not sure if you will see this or Ken but it’s not a TNF lineup question but a blind bid waiver set for Wednesday night that I need help on.
Aaron Jones may still be out, and I’ve lost Chubb and Akers who is in limbo. I need to make bids on one or two RB’s with options being Tony Jones, along with the Giants trio of Breida, Brightwell, and Eric Gray assuming Barkley is out. Could use your thoughts on these possible pickups.

Hey Jeff, Thanks for all your great advice. Good luck to you in your new adventures.
!6 team standard 1 QB. Lost Dobbins last week, I have Ford on my roster. My Rb room now is Ford, Javonte William, Tank Bigsby, Z White, J. Hill & A Salvon. Do you move Ford ? Or wait & see. Then move him?He is a 5th round draft pick. Hunt is having a visit. Is Ford the guy over Hunt, if hunt signs?

Good morning,
I need to start 2 of the following 4 (PPR format):
Javonte Williams @MIA
Kyren @CIN
Zack Moss @BAL
Kendre Miller @GB (only if he has no injury designation on game day)
I’m currently leaning toward starting both Williamses, but not really decidedly yet. Which would you choose?
Thanks & save travels!

First off, thank you again for last weeks advice on starting D’Andre Swift. His performance in my flex spot is what got me the win in the closet matchup of the week in our league!! Thank you!!!

Moving on to business here we find ourselves in a similar situation with a couple new players in the mix.

PPR scoring, Need 2 for Flex spots:

Metcalf vs CAR
Swift @ TB
Gainwell @ TB
Z. Moss @ BAL
J. Ford vs TEN

I’m leaning toward the seemingly obvious starts of Metcalf and Swift however I find Moss/ Ford intriguing although Ford vs TEN is less than ideal. I am going against a similarly matched opponent with my margin for victory predicted at +14 currently per Sleeper.

Thank you in advance!

It seems like such a trick doesn’t it? You want the RB to put you over the top but everyone wants to build around WRs so you’ve gotta be surgical in who you pick. And then there’s injuries…
Anyway.
I’ve got Aiyuk and Waddle starting as of right now. But if either or both anit out with injuries who would you slot in? 12TM start 9 PPR. Options are Atwell, Flowers or Tank Dell. Thanks for the help and good luck this week!

J Ford vs TEN, A Mattison vs LAC, J Warren @ LVR and R White vs PHI. Leaning Mattison and White but like the volume for Ford.
Need one of these three WRs:
DJ Moore @ KCC, M Evans vs PHI or T Burks @ CLE. Leaning Evans based on the last two games.
12 Team 1 point PPR

Hi Ken (my Kemo substitute for a few weeks),
TNF
In regards to your earlier response, I missed out on Tony Jones and Breida both in BB waiver. Jone’s value is all over the place ranging from not getting any bids up to over $150 in another.

So I’m stuck with just a couple of options until I either make a trade or let things go for a week or so.

If Aaron Jones is active, I start him. My problem is with Akers, Foreman, Kareem, and Eric Gray (who I did snag on bids) as my only remaining RB’s, I may have to either start Gray tonight vs a tough SF D and hope he gets something, or see if Kareem might start in Cleve and play a waiting game.

There is one more BB wiavers early Sunday AM but very little available in RB’s that have a chance to do something.
Any last minute thoughts? Thx.

Hi – I really enjoy the lineup advice article each week. Great insights!
Scoring = .25 pts PPR – WR and .05 pts PPR – TE. QB – 4 pts for TDs.
1st question: I’m kind of stuck @ QB this week, who would you start out of Geno, Watson, or Baker? I usually start Geno but he has a horrible matchup this week and I’m not sure what to expect out of Cle with Chubb out. I picked up Baker as I was thinking the TB / PHI game might be high scoring. Leaning Baker.
2nd question: I need one flex this week. Would you start Kirk, Thielen or Njoku? I’m leaning Kirk, especially if Jones is out but I think Thielen or Njoku could be OK this week too.
Thanks!

Hey Jeff, thanks for the good advice last week helping me pick Pickens over Sutton, although I still lost (thanks TLaw and Chase!). My wr’s this week are Chase, M. Williams, and Nico Collins, and my flex choice is between Christian Watson, Sutton and Pickens again (PPR). I think the safe play is Pickens because I worry about Watson re-injuring that hamstring in game if he suits up. Anything about his or Sutton’s match-up that makes the risk worth taking over the high target rate Pickens will get?

Hi Kemo Ken,

Like many of us, getting killed with injuries.

PPR
1) With both Waddle and Aiyuk out, I’ve put in Godwin and Atwell as subs. My only other choices are JSN and Thielen. Your thoughts?

Same team – Starting RB’s are Henry, Etienne, and Bijan. Would you play Swift over any of them?

2) Starting RB’s here are Jacobs and Mostert. I need two flex from Moss, Dameon Pierce, CEH, McKinnon, or even Kareem Hunt.

Same team again – With Waddle and OBJ out, I need a #3 WR from Parker, Demario Douglas, and Renfrow.

Thx again.

0.5 PPR
1 WR: AJ Brown, Keenan Allen (I am thinking Squeaky Wheel treatment here with AJ Brown).
1 RB, 1 Flex: Joe Mixon, Raheem Mostert, DJ Moore, Drake London (I am thinking Mostert at RB, London at WR.

This one is a bit tough –

PPR
1) My RB’s are Mostert, Swift, Gibbs, Rachaad White, and Mattison (I’m not counting Dalvin Cook with his usage). I will play four of them as my 2RB/2flex spots. Which one of those based on their matchup do I leave out this week?

I’d take out Mattison. We just haven’t seen enough. It would be great to see if the addition of Akers makes him play better but the fact is he may just be what he is – kind of average on a pass-first team.

Tough call with Pacheco’s hammy. I lean Jeudy but it’s close.

+.5 TE premium- need to start 2 of 3 in my flex spots: Luke Musgrave, JSN, or Treylon burks?

Might be the toughest question of the week. I’d sit Musgrave but it’s pretty close. He’s been impressive but still only has five total catches.

Just sort of a general question here… but is there any sort of format you *WOULDNT* start Jamarr Chase? Or if Burrow ends up being inactive tomorrow?

These are a few I would think of:
1.) Leagues where you don’t want to win
2.) Leagues where you can’t get points from Bengals players
3.) Leagues where you’re trying to earn disrespect from your leaguemates
Those would be the ones.
