Lineup Advice: Week 1 – My Last Ride

Jeff Haverlack’s last season of lineup advice on DLF! Have a question or need a second opinion? He’s here to help.

PLEASE READ ALL OF EACH WEEK’S POST

Late in 2005, three fantasy football nerds gathered at my house to watch football.

We had a relatively new dynasty league which had started a couple years earlier and we asked ourselves, “Why are there no other sites focusing on this format?” Dynasty was relatively new in the online world, but obviously gaining momentum. An hour or two later, the three of us huddled around my kitchen island and DynastyLeagueFootball.com was started on top of a pizza box.

How I wish I would have had the foresight to keep that box top. I’ve thought about it many times over the years, rotting away in some landfill as the crudely drawn structure, site design and plan slowly faded from view.

Early in 2006, DLF was formed and the site launched. We started with a crude site backed by a free forum, still available in its mostly original form today. Regardless of our future plans for the site, we knew we wanted to offer the community forum as a free resource so all dynasty fans could have a place to talk about our favorite format. In fact, DLF remained a completely free resource until 2012 when we launched our first premium subscription offer, a $14.99 annual plan. Simply put, if we didn’t start generating some income, we wouldn’t be able to grow the site and the “DLF Widows,” as we called them, would start making some demands to get their husbands back. The site took a tremendous amount of time and all of us had real jobs already on top of it.

The rest, as they say, is history. Through it all I look back and smile at what we created and those who helped us along the way. Good ol’ American capitalism and the ability to take an obscure idea and turn it into a business for the good of many. But even more than that, I have such great pride in the way we ran the business. Those who know me know I’m most proud of our foundation of values and ethics. They are the core of everything we’ve done.  I’ve always believed if you start a business and run it the right way, with a focus on core values into a good value proposition, people will support you.

If you build it, he (they) will come.

18 years later, this is my last ride at DLF.

The 2023 NFL regular season will be my last as a significant contributor here at DLF and, in all likelihood, this will be my last year of lineup advice. I imagine I’ll still be lurking around the dark halls of DLF corporate, engaging in the forum or on our Dicscord server from time to time, perhaps even continue with my rankings. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that I may be asked back next year to run this series. I don’t know what to expect if I’m being honest.

I’ve always been one to seek personal growth and new vistas to gaze upon. I believe discomfort is a great platform, and catalyst, for growth. Unless you get out of your comfort zone and realize new and unexpected feelings, you are doomed to walk the same path every day, staying within the bounds of what is known, what is comfortable. It’s time for me to walk a new path.

I’ve never been one to seek the limelight here at DLF. It’s not how I’m built. I’ve never cared overly much about follower counts though I did start to realize the benefit of having a greater number. I’ve never desired to get gratification based on how many followers I have or how large my audience is. The only thing I’ve cared about is that we run DLF in a way that provides value, with values, to those interested. I love the fact that we’ve accomplished that and have a membership spanning the world. I love hearing from our international members and seeing the NFL grow in popularity.

I don’t know what this new path will look like at this time, and there are still months ahead of my nose being to the grindstone to help, and interact, with all of you. Maybe I’ll become a solo act. Maybe I’ll start a podcast or YouTube channel. Patreon? Maybe I’ll even consider joining another site as a fantasy analyst. I’m still a writer for The Athletic and don’t see that changing anytime soon. Or, maybe, I’ll simply fade away from organized fantasy and simply be a dynasty coach for a change.

In the end, DLF is all about people and I’ve never lost my focus or desire to interact with as many of our readers and members as possible. It’s what motivates me every day. It was that way on day one, and that ideal persists today. I imagine it will continue into next year. In what form, I don’t know. We’ll see.

So, I hope you’ll tag along on my last ride, chime in to say a few words, continue to support what we’re doing here and maybe even seek a little advice. Beyond that, let’s simply be the architect of our future and see where it leads us.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Every year it seems we have to wait so long to say:  It’s here!

How I love this time of year! I’m sure you all share in my enthusiasm. But that is what’s so great about the dynasty format, as we say around here:  “There is NO offseason!”

Please read the rules and format below so that I can help as many of you as possible in the most efficient way possible. We’ve only grown over the past year so I imagine there’s going to be even more questions. As always, I will endeavor to be at my best to help you.

Note:  I will be traveling internationally from weeks 3-6 and largely off the grid. We will have someone else covering those four weeks. I will return in week seven.

Once again, I will be tracking my dynasty teams just so you can see my record, the moves I’m making and any news/notes related to my teams. For the first time since I started tracking my teams here, all 14 will be tracked. In recent years I had picked up some poorly performing orphan teams and gave myself two years before including them in the tracking.

Those teams are made up of (11) on MFL, (2) on RTS and (1) on ESPN.

I’ll get into some general build strategy and thoughts this time next week as I start tracking and reporting on their performance.

Let’s do this..

Lineup Advice Rules & Format

DLF continues to see growth in our membership and each year I continue to wonder how I’m going to keep up with all of your questions while also holding to a level of service and quality you’ve all come to expect from me. I’ve been VERY happy with my level of accuracy but, for that to occur, I need your help. Each question can take up to 10 minutes for me to research as I research up to a dozen different variables and trends. I do everything I can to get my answers correct. For that reason, I need you to read the following rules and guidelines to help me maintain efficiency:

  • Please don’t ask me to set your entire lineup
  • Put “TNF” as the top line for any question involving Thursday Night Football games
  • Please also make sure to tell me who YOU would be starting if not for my advice. It helps me to understand your gut feeling.
  • Include your scoring format  (PPR, Non-PPR, etc.)
  • Keep your questions as brief as possible – Story questions add a lot of time
  • I prioritize questions involving the earliest (Thursday, etc.) games first. If I skip over your question, don’t worry, I’ll be back to it.
  • It’s easy to miss responses to my responses in thread. When in doubt, always post a separate new question

Lastly, I work very hard to get my advice correct and I do not mail it in. When I’m wrong, I feel every incorrect answer so, go easy on me! That said, the DLF community has been absolutely fantastic to work with which is why I’m still doing this after so many years.

Have a great week! Have an even better season!

Mr. Haverlack,
I joined the Forum in 2014 and asked you some advice on what was my first but is now my least consequential league. Despite being an 8-team 2QB, you took the time to response directly and in depth to a message I sent you. It spurred me to become a premium subscriber and therefore flourish in my many leagues since. Good fortune in all your endeavors moving forward.

12 team PPR/1.25 TE PPR
Need help with my FLEX. My gut (and emotions. Love this guy) say Jamaal Williams but appreciate your two cents. Deciding amongst: Jamaal Williams, Christian Kirk, Deon Jackson, Evan Hull.
Thanks!

I love this site and have been a member for too many years to count. You’ve built something incredible and I can only hope that it continues in its current glory upon your departure. That said, im eternally grateful for the work you’ve done and the opportunity you’ve created for dynasty nerds like me to find a place to call home! Thank you!

Jeff you personally helped me get my mojo back when I contacted you 10 years ago. I was clueless with a floundering dynasty team. You literally explained and taught me what dynasty was all about. I thank you sir. I wish you and yours nothing but the best and want to let you know that you will sorely be missed. God bless you and your family.

Good luck moving on. Bottom of the roster question. Have competled the last two years however treating my team as a rebuild. I’m a little deep at TE only starting one. Question pick up Sean Tucker or Nacua then drop Jeline Woods? Have Andrews, Schultz, Woods and Likely as a TE handcuff.
Thoughts?

Firstly thank you for always taking the time to provide advice when called upon. You have been instrumental in reviving many of my under performing dynasty leagues over the years! Good luck with the next chapter!

Now for my question – 12 team SF .5 PPR

Start Geno or Pickett in the SF spot?
Start Deon Jackson, Mooney or Flowers in Flex?

Thanks mate looking forward to seeing you in Aus one day

***TNF***

Everyone should be able to decide when they ride off into the sunset and I’m glad you are going on your own terms like John Elway and Peyton Manning!

In the immortal words of the latest Bronco QB…Let’s ride! 😂

0.5 PPR. I need one.

RB Javonte Williams vs Raiders
WR Mike Williams vs Dolphins
WR Skyy Moore vs Lions

I’m leaning Williams as long as he’s healthy. That’s always a bid if. Javonte has a nice match-up but I wanted to give him a few weeks to get his sea legs. I don’t know if I can trust Moore yet despite his promised “everydown” role. The potential for a shootout is very tempting there though, as the the Mike Williams match-up.

Oh man…does the Kelce injury do enough to move Skyy Moore ahead of Williams? Someone has to catch the ball, right? I’m already reeling since I have Kelce. 😔

Jeff,

Qb, 2 rb, 3 wr, te, flex, d
.5 ppr, 12 team
rb-chubb, pollard, walker, dillon, penny
wr-adams, waddle, watson, pickens
I have a few more depth pieces at each rb and wr, but this is my main core. My question is about a trade offer I received. Dameon Pierce and a 24 3rd for my 25 1st, 2nd and a 26 3rd. Is this something you would pursue? With Hurts at qb and Kelce at te, im in a good spot with my team. Most likely my 25 1st is gonna be back half. Im leaning yes, but at the same time, it also doesnt seem necessary. Side note, ive always loved reading your content and ive always zeroed in on your rankings over anyone else’s when browsing the site. Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey Jeff. Thanks for all your help over the years and best of luck for the future. Thankfully subscribe to The Athletic so I’ll see you there!
Half PPR 1QB – Flex is between Dobbins and Pittman. I’m thinking Dobbins due to Richardson at QB for the Colts but both seem a bit risky to me? Thanks!

12 team PPR for both questions….
1) I need two out of the following: London, Deebo, Christian Watson, Dobbins, Kenny Walker, Rachaad White.
2) Need two out of the following: Godwin, Hopkins, Diontae Johnson, Lockett

Jeff – I joined the community in 2020 and have enjoyed your work here and at The Athletic. Happy to hear you’ll still be writing. Best of luck in the next step!
12 Team Superflex – Start 9 – 0.5 PPR
At Flex: Mike Evans at Min / George Pickens vs SF / Breece Hall vs Buf
At TE: Dalton Schultz at BAL or Dalton Kincaid at NYJ
I lean toward Evans and Schultz with either a known role (in Evans case) or Schultz as Stroud’s security blanket in game one. The upside of Hall, Pickens, and Kincaid is tantalizing.

Hi Jeff, first time caller, listener and subscriber. I’ve been using other software up until this year. Congrats on your move, or lack thereof. I have questions in 2 of my leagues. 1st .5 PPR Brandin Cooks or Antonio Gibson, My gut says Cooks.
2nd is my 20th anniversary league. I’ve been to the SB 10 of the 20 years. This league has a 1 PPR for WR only and .5 PPR for everyone else. (new rule this year, SB champ gets a rule change for 1 year) Should i start Dalvin Cook or Jordan Addison, I have Jefferson in the lineup already. My gut says Cook because I have Jefferson but the more I thought about that, the dumber it sounded. Should I just start Addison?
Is this how we are suppose to ask for lineup advise or is there another site somewhere hidden.
Thanks – Brian Luck

10team with IDP non-ppr, Superflex (SF)
RB – I’m leaning towards starting D’Andre Swift and leaving Najee Harris and Dalvin Cook on the bench. Thoughts?
SF – I have Jalen Hurts as my QB with Kenny Pickett and Bryce Young on the bench, I have an option to play either of them as a SF but it would require me to take out one of my WRs Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, Amon-Ra St. Brown or Deebo Samual. Would you recommend sticking with the 4WR or swap one out for the additional QB?

Jeff,
First of all, thanks for your help for the last few years and good luck in your next chapter.
For this week, full ppr, start 2RB, 2WR, 1TE and 2 Flex
My options:
RB: Saquon, Brian Robinson, Jamaal Williams
WR: Tee Higgins, Waddle, Mike Williams, Sutton, ARob
TE: Andrews, Dawson Knox
Leaning: Saquon, Robinson, Higgins, Waddle, Mike Williams, Sutton and Andrews
But serious doubts if I should squeeze Kamara-less Jamaal Williams in my line-up this week and would like to pick your brain on that
Thanks once again!!

Jeff,

No lineup advice needed this week I’m just going to let things roll and see what happens to start the season. I feel this year my RBs will be a situational start each week. With that said, good luck on your future adventures and endeavors. It’s been an absolute pleasure reading DLF and all the articles that are posted. I’ve been here since before the subscriptions were in place and have loved it each year. What has been created here is a dieheart community and a niche filled. Thank you again!

Hi Jeff, thrilled to have this piece back again this year as I value your advice. I play in a 12 team .5 PPR league that starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, and a FLEX (RB,WR,TE) and I was hoping you could provide some advice on who I should start in the FLEX spot as I feel the other positions are pretty easy sets at this point (Mahomes, Bijan, Dobbins, Chase, Amon Ra, Higgins, Hockenson).

These 7 players listed below are who I am trying to decide between as my best option at that FLEX spot. I probably feel the strongest about the top 4. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Dotson
James Cook
Brian Robinson
Diontae Johnson
Javonte Williams
Sutton
Marquise Brown

Hey! I love this comments section. Got a question for a PPR WR3 slot:

Brandin Cooks
Van Jefferson
Elijah Moore

I have Cooks slotted in because he’s projected to have more points in Sleeper, but curious if the Kupp injury makes Jefferson a better play?

Thanks!

Jeff, I wish you the best in this next season of your career & life, even in your transition you’ve invested the time to explain it with personalized attention & detail (love the origin story of the box top!) a hallmark of what attracted me to this site & this weekly lineup advice column specifically.

At 56 I’ve been at this awhile, my core league has been together since 1993, college buddies. I’ve been a member here for around 6 years and in that time, due in large part to taking your advice I’ve won it twice, with two seconds and one third place finish. This is without a doubt the most unique, value packed offering available in the space.

Thank you for the passion, honesty, commitment and patience you’ve invested over the years. I will selfishly say, in jest…this stinks 😀 for us. In all seriousness I wish you the best and hope that if you continue this in some format you will get the word out to your readers and email list, I will be sure to tune in.

No lineup questions this week, will start my best players on paper and jump back in next week with questions once I have some data under my belt. With extreme gratitude, Patrick

TNF
Tonto here. Wow, it’s been a long ride on that white horse Kemo. Been around since ’13 so you and your contributions will be sorely missed. Let’s see who steps up in the void that you leave.
A very late TNF for you.

PPR
Starting Mahomes (no other QB on this team)
WR #3 – With Kupp out, MVS just picked up on waivers last night or OBJ? Trying to swing a trade for Skyy but hasn’t happened yet.
Flex #2 – Would you play McKinnon over Hollywood or Mostert/Penny? My problem is that Jacobs is my #1 RB but if he’s not ready, I will need to put in Mostert or Penny in that spot.

Thx as always.

10 Team ½ point PPR
Need two of four RBs:
S Barkley vs DAL, R White @ MIN, JK Dobbins vs HOU and A Mattison vs TBB.
Barkley is the lock but split on the other three as all look to be ranked about the same.
Which WRs:
DJ Moore vs GBP TBB or M Evans @ MIN.
12 Team 1 point PPR
Flex spot:
Javonte Williams vs LVR or C Sutton vs LVR. Leaning Sutton if Jeudy is out.
Thanks in advance and appreciate all of the help last season.

.5 ppr and am rather blessed with WR’s. 12 team dynasty. Starting a WR in my flex this week (fricken Jonathan Taylor): Chase and AJ are locks. Need two of these 3: Deebo, Drake London, and Higgins.
Personally I have Deebo and Drake in there right now, but every…single…fantasy…site tells me I’m wrong and sub out Higgins for Drake. Since I have Chase, it always feels weird starting them both – and I have a gut feeling Drake will have a good game. Am I crazy or should I just go with the logical Higgins?

My situation is pretty dire at QB, and I have the option to either start a Wilson/Mims stack, or a JLove/Doubs stack. Both questionable at best, but which do you think is the better bet? I’m leaning Russ/Mims currently.

Jeff,
12 Team PPR. Start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR,1TE,1DEF, 2 flex. Starting A. Jones and James Cook at RB. Have M. Andrews at TE, WRs are Chase, Davonta Smith. T. Lockett in one Flex. This week, would you Flex Tyler Higbee over Breece Hall? Coach Saleh says he will bring Breece along slowly, and he is still listed Questionable. I know I would not be asking this in Week 5. Best wishes on your new ventures.

David Buffington

I have a strong team for our salary cap league but have a big gap at TE as a result. Taysom Hill or Jake Ferguson for week 1? I have Mayer as well, but I think Hill is going to get a bunch of carries, possibly at goal line and some receptions potentially too (and maybe some passing work?) and his upside is touchdowns. Doesn’t feel like any other sources see the same upside with Hill this week/early season that i do, but I think he could blow up early at a bargain.

Struggling with my flex for a full PPR league.

Cam Akers
Antonio Gibson
Elijah Moore
Juju Smith-Schuster
Pat Freiermuth

My gut says Gibson or Freiermuth would be the safer play. I have a hard time trusting Akers after the roller coaster last season. Juju & Moore’s new situation make me nervous. Juju’s knee question has me cautious as well.

Thanks in advance and best of luck in your new endeavors!!

Who do you advise I start?

Hi Kemo,
No problem on my very late TNF question. My bad. I didn’t play McKinnon or MVS which worked out okay. That made OBJ my #3 WR after Waddle and Lockett with Kupp on IR now.
PPR
1) On the above team, I need a 2nd flex from Hollywood, Penny, Hollins, or one of my backup TE’s in Kincaid or Likely. My other option is to pickup someone like Bourne on waivers at 7 am Tucson time Sunday morning possibly by dropping MVS, Hollins, or Eric Gray. Thoughts?

2) Two QB requests: Josh or Tua? (Surprised I’m asking). Josh or Burrow (and I have Diggs)?

3) WR’s are Davante, Waddle, and Mike Thomas. Need two flex players from Gabe Davis, Gallup, Mooney? (My remaining choices are Alec Pierce, Downs, Tank Dell, and Boutte).

4) Here’s the tough one: I started Gibbs on TNF. I need my 2nd RB plus two flex from this group:
Dalvin Cook
Swift
Mostert
Mattison
Rachaad White (wish I had more of this kind of problem)

Thx Kemo.

Chad Gorick

Hey Jeff, three teams with questions:
PPR –

  1. One has to sit from ETN, Rachaad, Mattison and Miles Sanders. I suppose I am least confident in Mattison and Sanders’ usage out of the gate.
  2. Looking for one Superflex QB from – AR, Purdy and Brice. I think Purdy is the safest but AR has the best upside.
  3. Rhamondre or Mattison – Rhamondre vs Philly is not exciting but I’m leaning his way.

Non-PPR

  1. Godwin or Diante Johnson – leaning Godwin in Non-PPR because I think he has the best chance of getting in the endzone.

Thank you sir!

Jeff, you rock!! Your advice has helped me take home some championships over the years! I appreciate all of your contributions to this great website. Here’s to a great year!
0.5 PPR, 4 Points Per Passing TD.
1 QB: Russ Wilson, Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young (Russ because I like the matchup but Richardson for his 6 Points for Rushing TDs is enticing)
4 Flex: D Henry, Diggs, AJ Brown, Garrett Wilson, Tony Pollard, Joe Mixon (Good problem to have! Henry, Diggs, Brown, Pollard?
1 TE: Irv Smith, Hunter Henry (Irv Smith I think? Seems like a decent dart throw compared to Henry).
Thank you!!

I think it depends on your matchup, honestly. If you feel like it’s even or if you have a slight advantage, I’d absolutely play it safe with Carr. I haven’t seen anything from ARich to say today is the day we see a dominant QB1 arrive thus far. It could certainly happen but I’d take the higher floor if it’s a close matchup. If not, swing away!
