Dynasty Fantasy Football 2022 NFL Draft Impact: Veteran Winners and Losers from Day Two

Dynasty players have been looking forward to this weekend for weeks, maybe even months. We were rewarded with the expected avalanche of skill position players taken on day two. NFL veterans will feel the impact of these choices, with some fearing for their respective jobs while others made it through the most important part of the draft unscathed. Let’s take a look at some of the players who could see their dynasty value changed as a result of tonight’s draft picks.
…but first, I have a few more observations from this year’s draft.
1.) The living corpse of Wayne Newton totally duped NFL Hall of Famer Marcus Allen. In case you missed it, Newton started the presentation of a pick, then turned the mic over to Allen and told him to say the name of the player together with him – he then proceeded to say the pick before Allen could even see it. This was a classic performance from a Las Vegas icon who can still keep a tune, but looks to be having trouble keeping time now that he’s hit 80 years old. It would have been cooler for the NFL to set him up and tell him the next person drafted was a tight end from Germany named Danke Schoen.
2.) We saw someone actually get the hook when former Minnesota running back Ed Marinaro decided to recite the longer version of War and Peace at the podium instead of keeping the draft moving with the Vikings pick. The producer with the courage to go out and tell him to just read the pick would be my clear 1.01 in a “Does he have dementia or is he just long-winded analysis league.”
3.) It took a kid to finally stand up to a General Manager on behalf of their fan base when the camera couldn’t get away from a young Eagles fan talking to Howie Roseman and saying, “For the love of God, draft us some linebackers!” By no means do I want to offend anyone by repeating that, but wow. That was a classic.

Anyway, on to the veteran winners and losers from day two.
Winners
Aaron Rodgers, QB GB
The addition of Christian Watson with the 34th pick is a nice start to replacing the production of Davante Adams. We all know it’s going to take a committee to get this done, but Watson should give Rodgers another option to throw to eventually.
Patrick Mahomes, QB KC
Skyy Moore isn’t going to take the place of Tyreek Hill (just like Watson can’t for Adams), but Moore is a nice fit for the Chiefs offense. He is a very intriguing player to consider in rookie drafts and the Chiefs have a good project to bring along in the next couple of years. It’s a nice safety net for Mahomes as Moore is a good young piece to develop and eventually put in a position to contribute when their veterans move on.
Drew Lock, QB SEA
The Seahawks have said all along Lock wasn’t a throw-in piece of the Russell Wilson trade. They’ve proved they were actually serious about it as they passed on all the quarterbacks in the first three rounds even when they had multiple chances to take any of them. Seattle must be looking ahead to next year’s class to fill the role permanently at this point. It looks like Lock will have a chance to prove himself this year with the Seahawks unless they go out and scoop up a veteran like Baker Mayfield.
Losers
Michael Carter, RB NYJ
There’s always a loser at the running back position and it’s hard to find a bigger one on paper this year than Carter. After trading up to take Breece Hall in the second round, he suddenly has some serious competition in the backfield. Carter managers shouldn’t completely panic as we’ve seen situations like this play out in lots of different ways, but Hall really does look like a superior talent and solid pick at the top of rookie drafts. Carter is going to likely be a 1B at best moving forward.
Rashaad Penny and Chris Carson, RBs SEA
The late season performance of Penny was nothing short of amazing and he’s going to get the first crack at proving that wasn’t a fluke. However, we’ve yet to see Penny healthy or productive for a truly long stretch of time. With Kenneth Walker III now in tow, he doesn’t have much of a margin for error and will be playing for a long-term contract. As for Carson, this move may indicate the Seahawks have really legitimate concerns in regards to his ability to return from his latest injury.
Zack Moss, RB BUF
James Cook was taken by the Bills on the second day. While adding someone like Hall would have really affected the value of Devin Singletary, this choice likely takes any appeal away from Zack Moss instead. Cook is going to be a popular target for non-Singletary truthers out there, but there’s no real need to panic if you have Singletary. As for Moss, take off your clothes and start running down the street shouting, “I am Ed Marinaro” if you were still counting on him panning out in Buffalo. Yes, it’s that level of panic.
Marcus Mariota, QB ATL
The Falcons always seemed likely to add a quarterback and they did just that when they took Desmond Ridder in round two. Mariota will now be a true bridge quarterback as they bring Ridder along. Should Mariota get hurt or faceplant early in the season, Atlanta will likely not hesitate in throwing Ridder into the mix. This was obviously expected, but still disappointing.
Ryan Tannehill, QB TEN
The Titans ended up having Liberty quarterback Malik Willis fall in their laps at pick #86. It really fits the timeline for Tennessee as they can ride out Tannehill and see if they can unlock the potential in Willis over the next year or two. Regardless, Tannehill doesn’t look like a long-term option in Tennessee any longer.
Ke’Shawn Vaughn, RB TB
You could say the addition of Rachaad White could affect the value of Leonard Fournette, but that’s likely stretching it a bit. In reality, White is more likely to eat into the role of Ke’Shawn Vaughn, who continues to look the part of a draft bust, despite showing some flashes at times last year.
Trey Sermon, RB SF
Again, you could say the surprise addition of Tyrion Davis-Price could be a threat to Elijah Mitchell, but it’s more catastrophic to Trey Sermon, who truly looks like a wasted draft pick in dynasty and reality after just one season. Still, keep an eye on this backfield. Everyone in a Shanahan running back room should merit heavy consideration and Davis-Price will be a trendy pick for owners who don’t believe Mitchell will stay healthy.
Sam Darnold, QB CAR
It seemed inevitable the Panthers would add a signal caller on day two and they did that with Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in round three. Carolina has completely lost faith in Darnold and it actually wouldn’t be a surprise to see this be a truly open competition from the start, especially with the chatter about Head Coach Matt Rhule needing to put together a better season to keep his job. Simply put, they’re going to play the quarterback they honestly think can help them win the fastest. If that’s Darnold, they should already be fired.
Antonio Gibson, RB WAS
We’ve seen a ton of conflicting information about just how the Commanders plan to use Gibson next season. It seems every week featured news about him being a true bell cow runner, but Washington followed that up by taking Alabama running back Brian Robinson in the third round. Robinson has enough talent to siphon some carries off Gibson early in his career. While he isn’t a threat to him taking over at this point in time, this further complicates his future. Again, no reason to panic here, but Robinson is going to be a popular dart throw in rookie drafts.
