20/20 Interview with Dave Wright

This week, DLF writer and the spaceman himself, Dave Wright, took some time with us so you could get to know him a little better. Dave is a lover of spreadsheets. Enjoy!

Where are you from?

Bangor, Maine. The Way Life Should Be/Worth a Visit, Worth a Lifetime.

What do you do for your regular job?

I work with students with special needs and I’m also an assistant Cross Country Coach.

What is the worst job you have ever had?

N/A. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve always found enjoyment in my work whether it’s as a summer camp counselor, waiter, painting gas stations, or working with kids.

What is the best job you have ever had?

Working with kids with special needs. People talk about bad things like aggression, tantrums, etc. and it can be really difficult because it’s unfiltered negative emotions. On the other hand, they also don’t filter out moments of joy, happiness, and laughter and it makes it all worthwhile when you see them make progress.

What do you consider your dream job?

Full-time fantasy nerd (cliche I know).

How long have you been in the industry?

About 8 months.

How did you get your break into fantasy football?

I spent a year making a college prospect database of over 1800 players. After I released it last February, a site (DFF) offered for me to come to write for them.

What tool do you use the most on DLF?

Even though I’m new to DLF I’ve been a long-time subscriber and it’s because of the tools. I always refer to the Dynasty ADP tool but I love to use the DLF Trade Finder Tool to come up with trade ideas or examples to talk about on my podcast. The Dynasty Trade Analyzer is an easy reference tool for dynasty trades as well.

What tool do you use the most outside of DLF?

As a true spreadsheet nerd Excel is my go-to so I can make my own databases, rankings, graphs, stat boxes, and more.

Who was the best sleeper you pegged that broke out?

Stefon Diggs

Who was your biggest whiff?

David Wilson in the 2nd round and Charles Johnson (MIN) in the 4th round are some of my all-time greatest misses.

What is the worst trade you have made?

In my first year playing dynasty, I traded Latavius Murray and other pieces for Buck Allen thinking he was taking over in BAL. Fail.

Who is your favorite underfollowed Twitter account?

@tacitassassin13. I don’t understand how Zac doesn’t have 20k followers. His strategy analysis is worth the price of admission but he also has amazing parody songs and is my go-to person for film analysis.

Who is your favorite NFL team?

New England Patriots

Who is your favorite college football team?

Maine Black Bears

Who was your favorite player growing up?

Ty Law. I remember getting a 105-yard pick with him in Madden 98 and I became a fan for life.

Who is your favorite player of all time?

Tom Brady. He has given me so much joy, drama, heartbreak, and you name it to last a lifetime.

What other hobbies or passions do you have outside of fantasy football?

I’m fantasy 24/7 but I’m a big movie buff, I enjoy hiking, reading, and I like to play video games even though I haven’t played in years.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Braveheart is my favorite of all time, Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire, Rio Bravo, Gladiator, and The Three Musketeers, to name a few more.
