DLF’s 2019 IDP Predictions: Best IDP Sell

Ryan Finley

More and more, standard fantasy leagues have made moves to eliminate positions like kickers and team defense. The simplification makes sense, if you’d prefer to focus on a few offensive positions to make the game more enjoyable. But some folks want to go the other route with defense, and would prefer to roster individual defensive players rather than sweep defense under the rug.

Are IDP leagues more difficult? I don’t think there’s a great answer for that, but I can tell you that managing a 40+ man roster and trying to figure out which cornerbacks to carry can be quite difficult. But that’s why here at DLF we give you the IDP content you crave, including DLF’s 2019 IDP Predictions. As we do every year, we have several different prediction articles for you in the following categories:

Next we’ll give our picks for Best IDP Sell:

Blake Martinez, LB GB

As much as this Bears fan hates to say it, the Packers defense is improved from last year and that means Martinez will have fewer opportunities this season. I’d peddle him off to a leaguemate for someone with comparable name caché. – Doug Green

CJ Mosley, LB NYJ

Not a reflection of the player, I am selling Mosley if he is fetching top-ten linebacker prices. Mosley posted big tackle numbers in a Baltimore system that funneled tackle opportunities to the inside linebackers. He is a good player but I don’t see him producing the numbers he has in the past ever again. – Dwight Peebles

Darius Leonard, LB IND

I know this is basically heretical to suggest, but there is zero chance that Leonard performs even close to what he did in 2018. The best part is, many are expecting him to. Leonard had a tackle on 12.4% of his snaps, which is a very impressive rate, although, a lot of this was due to him being the most targeted linebacker in the league. His target numbers will easily decline as he becomes less easy to pick on in the passing game and his tackles will regress to the mean a bit. This is a perfect opportunity to sell a player that has a ton of hype, potentially at peak value. Plus, he plays a position that is very deep and is replenished with top talent yearly. – Adam Tzikas

Jamal Adams, S NYJ

Adams is a really good player. But his value comes from versatility. He can play in the slot as well as in the box. His success through two years has been based on insane volume (not efficiency). This year he is likely to play much less than his first two years. – Tommy Kislingbury

Jarrad Davis, LB DET

I wouldn’t make this my top priority or anything, but he’s the young linebacker I am most concerned about long-term. An elite linebacker’s greatest ability is availability and this guy should not be near the field in passing situations. One of the things which really helped him last year was his six sacks on top of his 100 total tackles. It’s more difficult to predict sacks for inside linebackers and that’s a volatile thing to be counting on year in and year out. Unless he really tightens his game up he has the look of a two-down thumper. – Eric Olinger

Jarran Reed, DT SEA

Seemingly out of nowhere, Reed had 12 tackles for loss, 24 QB hits, and 10.5 sacks in 2018. Every week he was making a big play, and he became an easy start no matter his opponent. But a closer look shows that Reed was getting those numbers on a small number of hurries, and that level of efficiency is not consistent year-over-year. There is a high likelihood Reed just isn’t that good. Throw in a six game suspension to start the season, and it is time to trade him to a team that wants to think he’s taking advantage of you for being too impatient to wait it out. – Ryan Early

JJ Watt, DE HOU

I mean, most owners will probably ride it out until Watt calls it a career, but if you have the opportunity to trade him now and the return package benefits you, don’t hesitate to pull the trigger. Yes, he’s a dominant force on the field but he’s piled up quite a resume of injuries the last few years so might be better to be proactive than reactive. – Bee Salamat

Kiko Alonso, LB NO

There are some rumors that Alonso might not survive the upcoming preseason cuts. [Eds.: Miami shipped Alonso to New Orleans September 1st.] What’s worse is his direct back up, Sam Eguavoen, has been playing incredibly well throughout the preseason. Alonso’s star was already fading last season as he was moved from WLB to SLB midway through the season. Even if he survives the preseason, I’d be surprised if he holds onto his starting role for another year. – The FF Ghost

Darius Leonard, LB IND

I know, it feels tough to trade a young guy who had a blistering first season. But hear me out. Linebackers don’t perform like that and do it year after year. Seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss are just obscene numbers at the position, and I expect regression. You’re also selling him at what might be max value and you can find linebackers in IDP anywhere. – Ryan Finley
