Prospect Play: CeeDee Lamb, Part One

Ray Garvin

The Prospect Play series is a quick film session that highlights specific traits and attributes from potential soon-to-be NFL Stars. Anybody can post the highlight reel plays; come take a look at some of the lesser-known plays that make these college prospects devy and dynasty talents.

CeeDee Lamb, WR Oklahoma

Lamb is one of the top overall prospects in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. I’ve jokingly said that he is the fastest ‘not that fast’ guy in all of college football. At 6’2”, 192 pounds he looks and plays like an alpha receiver. He’s a skilled versatile player who has excelled from day one in college.

He has demonstrated an ability to hit big plays over the top, take bubble screens to the house, and provide instant impact on special teams. To place the cherry on top of the CeeDee Lamb cake, he’s a fantastic blocker in the running game; an underrated asset that NFL teams will not overlook.

Playing with Baker Mayfield at quarterback, Lamb burst onto the scene as a true freshman catching 46 passes for 807 yards and seven touchdowns. His sophomore season breakout was even more impressive as he caught 65 passes for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He was able to produce despite a new quarterback, Kyler Murray and Baltimore Raven’s first round pick Marquise Brown playing opposite of him. I’ve maintained that he was the best and most complete receiver on the OU roster, even with Brown on the team.

The 2019 season started off with an improbable bang for Lamb. He only accumulated 28 receptions through the first six games, but those 28 grabs went for 610 yards and ten touchdowns. Let’s take a look at some of what makes him special below.

Prospect Play Summary

Ball-tracking ability – Outside of Tee Higgins, he might be the best at tracking and locating the deep ball. You don’t see him lose passes in the air, and his ability to contort his body to make incredible grabs are second to none.

Short-area quickness – It doesn’t look as pretty as some other prospects, like a Jerry Jeudy; but his short-area quickness is effective. This is the one area I’m really interested in seeing his testing measurables at the combine.

Power and play strength – Listed below 200 pounds, he has a knack for breaking tackles and bouncing off contact. He plays much bigger than his listed frame, and appears to have room to add more muscle at the next level. I expect him to go into the pre-draft process weighing 200 pounds or maybe even a little more.

Playmaking ability – Arguably the best playmaker in this class at the receiver position. He has an ability to make nothing out of something. He has consistently shown an ability to deliver splash plays from all over the field.

Conclusion

CeeDee’s stat lines to start the season were truly a roller coaster ride. He alternated between being held to two receptions or less and sub 50-yard performances and 100 plus yard games every other week. However, he scored in six straight games and showed tantalizing skills in each contest.

This breakdown should give dynasty managers all the confidence they need to select him early in rookie drafts next spring. It only gets better for Lamb in part two! Stay tuned.
