IDP Snap Counts: Week 13

Tom Kislingbury

Happy Holidays everyone. And congratulations for making the playoffs this season. I’m sure you’ll destroy the opposition.

Arizona Cardinals

As we predicted in week one the Cardinals lead the NFL in defensive snaps. They haven’t seen fewer than 70 in a game since week six. Incredibly Patrick Peterson (79) has played over 70 in every single game this year.

The big news this week was Haason Reddick (one) playing just a single snap at LB. Reports are that it was a full-on benching. Joe Walker (79) played every snap and is a priority add.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons played just 50 snaps this week so don’t be put off. It’s a bad defense but no one really produces on 50 snaps.

Ricardo Allen continues to be the safety you should be starting. He’s playing the box role. He’s not a star but he’s fairly reliable. Given so many people think Damontae Kazee (42) is a good start, Allen is readily available.

Baltimore Ravens

In contrast to the Cards the Ravens have only played 70 or more defensive snaps twice this year. Over the past three games they’ve actually averaged just 57. This is bad for our purposes.

There is no LB you should be starting. Patrick Onwuasor (23) hasn’t played 50 snaps in a game since week five. L.J. Fort (21) has averaged 22 snaps per game since he became a Raven. And Josh Bynes (28) is only a littler better on 35.

Buffalo Bills

Jerry Hughes (61) has been disappointing, hasn’t he? He’s a top 20 pass rusher in opportunity and pressure but he has just three sacks for the season. That is a woeful level of conversion. He’s still worth starting in many leagues, but don’t treat him as more than a low DE2.

Carolina Panthers

Brian Burns (13) has now averaged just 16 snaps over his past four games. Efe Obada (11) has averaged 13 and Christian Miller (11) 14.

Safety Eric Reid (64) now has 23 solo tackles in his past three games. He’s been astonishingly productive. He has played more in the box than we normally expect from a two-deep scheme safety, but even so he’s just not that good. He’s a fine sell opportunity in this writer’s opinion.

Chicago Bears

LB Nick Kwiatkoski (71) has settled in to playing almost every snap. He’s very startable right now, at least until Danny Trevathan returns. He has very little long-term value (unless something changes), so please don’t get fooled into thinking he’s a great asset. You should be selling if at all viable.

Khalil Mack (68) and Leonard Floyd (62) both failed to record a sack. They have two combined sacks in the last five Bears games. They’re just not really productive right now. Mack is at least playing well (Floyd is just bad), but if he’s not getting the sacks, he’s a huge worry for playoff games.

Cincinnati Bengals

Congratulations on the win Bengals!

In a competitive game Carl Lawson played 55 snaps at DE. He had averaged just 35 this season before this game. Sam Hubbard (54) conversely played less than usual.

This shows the difference between them. Hubbard is a more complete player, but Lawson is the better pure rusher. Lawson is a better bet in games when the Bengals have more opportunity to go after the QB (i.e., they’re competitive).

Now Hubbard managed a sack and Lawson did not but it’s a good demonstration nonetheless!

Cleveland Browns

Olivier Vernon (12) returned from injury but saw very limited snaps. Expect him to ramp up going forwards. Chad Thomas (24) had a sack to make it three in the last four games. Porter Gustin (37) actually led all DEs in playing time.

At safety Sheldrick Redwine (61) did play a week after we thought he would. Juston Burris (62) remains the better IDP choice for now.

Dallas Cowboys

Darian Thompson (67) returned at safety after a week out. Jeff Heath did not play at all.

Denver Broncos

CB Davontae Harris did not play so Isaac Yiadom (66) stepped up.

OLB Justin Hollins (46) played his biggest game with Von Miller out. He’s been a big disappointment after an interesting preseason and has just three pressures on the year.

Will Parks (52) played a heavy game which was mostly in the slot. He’s not been paying enough to think about starting him though.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit LB situation has settled again over the last two games. Devon Kennard (51) and Jarrad Davis (56) are again the only players approaching being full-time options with Christian Jones (27) and Jahlani Tavai (20) unstartable.

Safety Tracy Walker (52) returned to action after his injury. He snagged seven tackles somehow – which is surprising because Tavon Wilson (65) played more and is clearly the box safety too. Weird.

Green Bay Packers

The last time Kyler Fackrell (28) did NOT out-snap 12th overall pick Rashan Gary (12) was back in week two. Gary has just ten total pressures for the season. He’s been really rather poor. He does have two sacks to his name. Both of those were takedowns of Joe Flacco, which tells you long ago it was.

Houston Texans

The Texans played a huge 87 snaps against the Patriots. Remarkably, their secondary was the best part of the defense.

So far this season the Texans have used ten different cornerbacks. Ten!

Right now, the starters are Bradley Roby (85), Johnathan Joseph (77) and Vernon Hargreaves (73), with Lonnie Johnson (38) the dime back.

Defeating the Patriots with that unit is very impressive.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are a low-volume defense. They played 60 this week and have only hit the 70 mark once all season.

Corner Rock Ya-Sin (44) returned from injury. Marvell Tell missed the game as a result.

Khari Willis (46) was the top strong safety this week but he obviously played only around three quarters of snaps. George Odum (12), Clayton Geathers (18) and Rolan Milligan (eight) are all getting on the field too.

Jacksonville Jaguars

LB Najee Goode is on IR and will miss the rest of the season. Myles Jack was hurt this week and inactive, which left Quincy Williams (73) and Donald Payne (75) to play. Yuk.

With Ronnie Harrison out with concussion Andrew Wingard (57) was the fill-in. Marcus Gilchrist also helped out because Wingard dies not seem ready to play full-time.

Kansas City Chiefs

DE Alex Okafor (40) returned after a long absence. Frank Clark (33) lost snaps as a result. Tanoh Kpassagnon (51) played a lot more than either of them.

There remains no reliable LB to use for IDP purposes on this team. Anthony Hitchens (46) and Damien Wilson (40) lead the way but they shouldn’t be in your starting team.

Los Angeles Chargers

WOOO! Derwin James returned from injury to play his first game of the season. He’s a must-start going forwards. Jaylen Watkins dropped to the bench with Adrian Phillips (23) also returning from injury. Rodric Teamer did not play and should not be rostered.

Drue Tranquill also returned and led Chargers LBs with 42 snaps. That isn’t great against 57 total snaps. Thomas Davis (35), Kyzir White (27) and Denzel Perryman (15) also saw playing time.

Mike Davis missed the game at corner which led to Brandon Facyson (57) playing his first significant game since week three.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams won this game at such a canter they gave a load of playing time to minor players –  like David Long (27) and Donte Deayon (25) at corner. Morgan Fox saw 37 snaps at DE. Travin Howard 33, Troy Reeder (30) at LB. And Obo Okoronkwo 23 on the edge. You can safely ignore this week and assume normal service is resumed in the next game.

Miami Dolphins

This Dolphins defense is surprisingly fun isn’t it?

They seem to be paying for enjoying Reshad Jones for so long at safety though. Adrian Colbert (70) played alongside Eric Rowe this week with Montre Hartage (20) an Walt Aikens also getting onto the field.

Aside from LB Jerome Baker (63) and DT Christian Wilkins (52) you should be avoiding most of this defense in its entirety.

Minnesota Vikings

DT Linval Joseph (53) returned after missing the last couple of games. Jaleel Johnson (20) drops back to third-choice tackle.

Everson Griffen appeared to take a knock and played just 43 snaps (of 75). Stephen Weatherly (36) is the next man up if Griffen misses time.

New England Patriots

CB Jason McCourty was missing again this game.

DE Chase Winovich managed another sack from just 22 snaps. He’s had an amazingly productive year for the little he’s played.

Jamie Collins (31) saw limited time this week. Keep an eye out for updates this week.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints played a huge 93 snaps against the Falcons. The offense held the ball for just 50 snaps, which is a crazy ratio.

“Star” corner Marshon Lattimore (81) returned after his absence. He’s not nearly as good as his reputation says he is. He was great as a rookie but that was a while ago now.

Craig Robertson stepped in at LB to play 50 snaps, more than A.J. Klein (33) and Kiko Alonso (30). Obviously, Demario Davis (90) remains the only LB to start. He may well be cut in the off-season so the Saints might be on the lookout for a new LB.

New York Jets

This team is so, so bad.

Neville Hewitt (65) and James Burgess (66) remain the LBs.

Jamal Adams (65) must cry himself to sleep at night.

New York Giants

Safety Jabrill Peppers missed the game. CB Julian Love has had to step in to play there as an emergency option. To be fair to him he’s done OK – at least he can cover.

Oakland Raiders

Two Raiders DEs are first and third in rookie snaps at the position this year. Maxx Crosby (64) leads the way with Clelin Ferrell (38) third. That is amazing.

Incidentally Benson Mayowa (17) and Dion Jordan (29) are also playing.

Ferrell has 21 pressures and four sacks. Crosby has 38 and eight. Quite the difference, eh?

Philadelphia Eagles

This defense just got beat by the Dolphins.

At least the D-line created some pressure but it just wasn’t enough. Nate Gerry (39) continues to be a part-time player behind Nigel Bradham (69).

Pittsburgh Steelers

Devin Bush (51) continues to be a part-time player. He’s played 177 of 275 snaps over the past four games with none of them being full-time games.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks played just 55 snaps this week after averaging 81 over the past four games. All players performed a little lower than expected. This explains why only Bobby Wagner (55) really did well from the three LBs. K.J. Wright (54) and Mychal Kendricks (27) just didn’t have good days.

Bradley McDougald (55) is the safety you want here. He’s playing the box role, with Quandre Diggs (54) playing deep. Diggs has a lot of fans because he’s got a cool name and had some big days way back when, but he’s a very poor start right now.

San Francisco 49ers

With Dee Ford out the DE situation has crystallized a bit. Arik Armstead led the way this week with 61 snaps. Nick Bosa came in just behind on 55. Jullian Taylor (24) and Solomon Thomas (18) are part-timers.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Corner remains a mess for the Bucs. Carlton Davis (71) seems to have a guaranteed role. Then Sean Bunting (69) is getting settled. Ryan Smith (49) came out of nowhere this week with Jamel Dean (seven) and Mazzi Wilkins (nine) afterthoughts. Mazzi Wilkins sounds like the bass player in a 90s indie band.

Tennessee Titans

Adoree’ Jackson was limited to just 15 snaps. Malcolm Butler has been out for weeks now. The Titans cornerback chart all of a sudden looks rough. Tye Smith (64) and Kareem Orr (48) are the next men up.

Rashaan Evans (55) has quietly lost some playing the last two weeks. Jayon Brown (71) remains a full-time option but Wesley Woodyard (13) has been playing in some situations. Evans really is very bad in coverage, so that’s likely the reason.

Washington Redskins

OLB Ryan Kerrigan missed this game. And Montez Sweat was limited to just 33 snaps. Washington brought in Nate Orchard (43) and Chris Odom (30) to make up the numbers.

To little, too late.

I sincerely hope your team is in the playoffs next week, and best of luck to you going forwards.

Thanks for reading and good luck everyone!
