Dynasty Waiver Wire: Week Eight

Levi Chappell

Have you ever woken up on a Saturday morning craving a good bowl of cereal? You open up the cupboard and you see Cheerios, Grape Nuts, and Fruity Pebbles, so obviously you reach for the box of sugary goodness. Easy choice, right? You pour the cereal into the bowl, drizzle some milk on top, and now you are ready to chow down. You take one bite and realize that you are eating one of the most overrated cereals of all time (if you are going with pebbles, why not cocoa?). You taste that weird, fake fruit taste and instantly regret your choice. But you already poured the milk and you don’t want to waste it, so you power through and eat the entire thing.

You might be wondering what on God’s green earth am I talking about? Well, your fantasy team may be like a bowl of fruity pebbles at this point. On Sunday morning you turn the TV on to watch your team or your players, only to be sorely disappointed. Yet the game is already on and what else are you going to do on a Sunday anyway? Yardwork? Actual work? Something responsible? No way. You are watching football whether your team is a dumpster fire or not.

The one thing you get to look forward to with a team that is limping towards the finish line is the prime choice of waiver wire players. So let me break down some players that you may want to keep an eye on this week, and by all means . . . choose Cocoa Pebbles.

Shallow (18-22 man rosters)

Josh Reynolds, WR LAR

Brandin Cooks‘ season to forget got even worse on Sunday when he was knocked out of the game with a concussion. Reynolds stepped into his spot and filled in nicely. He finished the game with eight targets. While he was only able to grab three of them, he did turn them into 73 yards and a score. If Cooks has to miss additional time, Reynolds steps into the WR3/4 range.

Hunter Renfrow, WR OAK

With four receptions for 88 yards and a TD, Renfrow had the best game of his young career. While he has not quite lived up to the training camp buzz, Sunday’s effort showed that he is fully capable of contributing to his team. Tyrell Williams has been banged up all year, and Derek Carr needs a safety blanket. Renfrow is a good “end of the bench” add.

Danny Amendola, WR DET

Amendola was an add in the “average” league sizes. Now he is an add in the “shallow” league sizes, and he may not even be available in your league. He followed up his eight catch, 105-yard performance last week with another eight catches for 95 yards. He and Stafford seem to have good chemistry. While Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones have higher ceilings, Amendola has a relatively safe floor.

Darius Slayton, WR NYG

Slayton had been having an up and down rookie season so far. When Sterling Shepard was knocked out for a couple of games, many thought Slayton would step in and make an impact, but it was not the case. This Sunday, however, he showed he can contribute in a big way. While he has never had more than four catches in a game, and probably will not be a high volume pass catcher, he can clearly make plays in the air like his two TDs on Sunday. He is worth a stash.

Other “shallow” roster players to keep an eye on:

Average (23-27 man rosters)

Brian Hill, RB ATL

With Ito Smith still out of the Falcons’ lineup, Hill served as Devonta Freeman’s primary backup. He saw limited work, but still rushed for 29 yards on three carries and found the end zone. He carries a decent amount of value with both Smith and Freeman having injury histories. He isn’t flashy but could be a possible “spot start” if an injury or two happens to fall on other Atlanta running backs.

Alex Erickson, WR CIN

To be completely honest, I thought Erickson would be a simple flash in the pan, never to be heard from again. He had a whopping 14 targets last week and accumulated 137 yards. I didn’t think he would even come remotely close to that again, and while he didn’t have over 130 yards, he did catch six balls for 97 yards. He showed that he is going to stick around, and with the possibility of AJ Green being traded, Erickson may keep seeing the field and garnering targets.

Tyler Eifert, TE CIN

Clearly a speculative add, talent has never been in question for Eifert — only the knock that he cannot stay healthy for an entire season. With the trade deadline coming up on Tuesday, there is a surprising amount of buzz about a potential trade. If he were to go to a place like Seattle or New Orleans, his value would skyrocket.

Tra Carson, RB DET

All of the Lions buzz during the week was centered around Ty Johnson. Well, it just so turns out that Carson would start the game and lead the team in carries as well. I am a diehard Lions fan, and this move caught even me off guard. He didn’t do much with his opportunity, rushing 12 times for 34 yards, but then again, 12 carries is 12 carries. I wouldn’t feel comfortable starting any Lions running back right now, but Carson is definitely worth an add.

Other “average” roster players to keep an eye on:

Deep (28+ man rosters):

Boston Scott, RB PHI

During Miles Sanders‘ breakout game of his rookie year, he was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury. He will receive an MRI on Monday for more clarification. Scott came into the game and found the end zone.

Jordan Howard will dominate the touches if Sanders is forced to miss any time, but Scott is a versatile running back to own if you need depth or assurances.

Tajae Sharpe, WR TEN

Sharpe caught three passes on Sunday and found the end zone as well. He has not seen consistent playing time this year simply due to the fact that he is behind Corey Davis, AJ Brown, and Adam Humphries on the depth chart.

He plays a similar role to either Davis or Brown and is one injury away from being a starter on a revitalized passing attack. Ryan Tannehill isn’t great, but he is at least throwing the ball downfield, and giving his team a shot to win each week.

Ryan Griffin, TE NYJ

We have all been waiting on Chris Herndon to come back and make an impact at the dreaded tight end position, but as of now we are still waiting. While I still think Herndon will come back and be the starter, Sam Darnold and Griffin look like they have found solid chemistry.
