IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Tom Kislingbury

Isn’t it amazing how fast the season goes by? Week six is done already and the advance of new IDP targets is slowing. It never stops though. Vigilance and patience set you apart from your rivals.

Arizona Cardinals

The cards have settled down in defensive volume. They’re just 11th in average defensive naps now after a red-hot start. That’s not bad but it’s not the advantage it looked like early on.

Terrell Suggs managed just 33 snaps at OLB this week. He’s not a young guy. Cassius Marsh stepped up to also play 33 snaps. His highest total of the year so far.

At safety the pattern was similar to last week with Budda Baker the only full-time player. Deionte Thompson (36) and Jalen Thompson (33) shared the other spot.

Atlanta Falcons

CB Desmond Trufant missed this game at corner which meant Kendall Sheffield (56) stepped in.

The Falcons continue to play a mainly 3-4 scheme with Takk McKinley (52) an Vic Beasley (53) installed as the lead (albeit ineffective) pass rushers.

Baltimore Ravens

LB Patrick Onwuasor missed the game. Josh Bynes (37), L.J. Fort (28) were the main beneficiaries. But Pernell McPhee (42) and safety Anthony Levine (26) also played a bit inside.

With safety Tony Jefferson on IR Chuck Clark (62) also picked up a lot of playing time and lined up in the box fairly often. He’s an interesting target.

Note Chris Board and Kenny Young played zero snaps on defense although both played on special teams. They seem to have both blown their chances.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills had a bye week and recorded zero snaps.

Carolina Panthers

Bruce Irvin continues to be a major player on the edge. He managed 52 snaps in this game behind Mario Addison (60). Brian Burns (33) is playing much less with Irvin fit. He’s produced so far anyway but it’s a worry.

Chicago Bears

The Bears had a bye week after travelling to London in week five.

Cincinnati Bengals

DE Carlos Dunlap was not fit for this game, so Carl Lawson played 63 snaps (and managed a sack). Andrew Brown (44) is the third end with Sam Hubbard on 69.

Rookie Germaine Pratt got his first decent load with 31 snaps. Nick Vigil (74) and Preston Brown (56) remain out in front of him for now.

Safety Shawn Williams (40) played but was limited. Brandon Wilson (56) and Clayton Fejedelem (16) picked up some playing time. Jessie Bates hit 79.

Cleveland Browns

Safety Morgan Burnett (19) definitely lost playing time by being injured. In the two games since he returned, he’s averaged 23 snaps. Jermaine Whitehead has averaged 78 in those games.

Dallas Cowboys

Corner Byron Jones was hurt in this game and played just 38 snaps. Jourdan Lewis (37) stepped in for him.

Vet LB Sean Lee played 37 snaps. His most for the season. Jaylon Smith (49) and Leighton Vander Esch (48) could only manage limited action.

Denver Broncos

CB Davontae Harris played all 70 snaps next to Chris Harris. Isaac Yiadom (13) may have blown his shot.

Josey Jewell played special teams but not on defense while Alexander Johnson (61) continued to play. Johnson should be owned in leagues that start four or more LBs.

Detroit Lions

The Lions are currently second in the NFL for defensive snaps but this is boosted by their week one overtime game against Arizona. Since then they’ve averaged 72 per game which would put them tenth. They played 74 this week.

Jarrad Davis (72) remains the top LB. Since his return he’s missed just 13 defensive snaps. Devon Kennard is the other LB, but as we know he plays a hybrid inside/sam role that makes him an inefficient IDP. Christian Jones (42) and Jahlani Tavai (44) remain firmly behind and not serious options.

Tracy Walker (73) is the only full-time safety with Tavon Wilson (55) and Will Harris (36) playing sparingly.

Green Bay Packers

Oren Burks continued his low-key return to health. He played just five snaps which is no good to anyone. B.J. Goodson played 34. Needless to say Blake Martinez (59) is still the only startable option.

Will Redmond (57) and Adrian Amos (59) played safety with Darnell Savage out injured.

Houston Texans

With Johnathan Joseph out for this game Philip Gaines (58) stepped in at corner. Lonnie Johnson (58) is the other full-time corner with Bradley Roby (42) limited in this game.

This is a bad unit.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts enjoyed a bye week to rest up and get healthy.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Rookie LB Quincy Williams was flat out dropped in this game. This should not be surprising. He’s not a good player. His replacement Najee Goode isn’t great either but he’s at least average. Williams hasn’t even looked that good.

IDP owners love unheralded rookies to win a job and be good for years. But coaches are smart enough to not put up with awful play.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have now averaged 83 defensive snaps per game over the last four games. They’re joint top for the season. Last season they were among the highest volume defense too.

DE Alex Okafor returned to fitness this week and played 65 snaps. Emmanuel Ogbah dropped right down to 44.

With Chris Jones out, Derrick Nnadi (76) played a huge workload and Khalen Saunders (55) had a big game too.

Damien Wilson (80) was again partnered by Ben Niemann (90) with Anthony Hitchens out.

Los Angeles Chargers

With Melvin Ingram still out, Uchenna Nwosu (36) continues to play as a true edge.

LB is still a muddle with Thoams Davis (47) the closest to being a reliable option.

Kyzir White (28), Drue Tranquill (31) and Denzel Perryman (30) all picked up not enough snaps.

Los Angeles Rams

Aqib Talib missed the game at CB. Troy Hill (78) filled in for him.

Clay Matthews missed the game. Samson Ebukam (71) stepped up to play instead.

Troy Reeder (48) had another good game. However, he’s played just 102 snaps from 152 in the two games he’s been in. He’s not a full-time player so his value is capped.

Taylor Rapp is one of the reasons. He returned to play 34 snaps – including many in the box.

Miami Dolphins

Charles Harris played a pitiful 12 snaps this week. That’s just 28 of 126 in the last two games. Even the Dolphins have realised he’s awful. Needless to say he’s droppable.

Jerome Baker (48) is the lone LB you can trust here. Raekwon McMillan (30) and Sam Eguavoen (19) don’t seem good enough to be full-time players.

At safety Reshad Jones managed just 44 snaps. He’s really passed his time as a startable IDP.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings remain one of the more settled defenses in the NFL.

The biggest change this week Mackensie Alexander (34) returning to fitness. Mike Hughes (26) lost snaps to him.

New England Patriots

The Patriots continue to rotate at DE. None of their options there are currently startable. Chase Winovich has scored well but it’s been big plays and he does not have the playing time to hit them consistently.

The situation at LB is also tough. Jamie Collins (44) is the best option there with Kyle Van Noy (46) and Dont’a Hightower (24) fraught with peril.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are also extremely settled. Here’s a quick rundown of the team.

Malcom Brown (30), David Onyemata (34) and Sheldon Rankins (28) rotate at DT.

Cameron Jordan (54) ans Marcus Davenport (46) are the clear top edge players.

Demario Davis (59) and A.J. Klein (58) are the full-time LBs. Kiko Alonso (17) has just a minor role and should be dropped.

Eli Apple (58) and Marshon Lattimore (59) play outside corner with P.J. Williams in the slot.

Vonn Bell (59) is the strong safety with Marcus Williams (59) the free safety.

New York Jets

Newville Hewitt (54) took a knock this game and missed some time. Albert McLellan (28) stepped in for him. Blake Cashman (75) manned the other spot. Cashman is not impressing. Expect him to be benched once C.J. Mosley returns.

The edge rushers on the Jets will be ignored for now. You shouldn’t be roster let alone starting any of them. They are all awful.

New York Giants

Alec Ogletree (81) returned at LB for the Giants. David Mayo (58) was the second option but he played relatively few snaps.

On the edge Markus Golden (57) is having a fine season. Lorenzo Carter (50) and Oshane Ximines (52) are also getting snaps.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders enjoyed a bye week after their trip to London in week five.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles continue to roll out a hodge-podge of players at corner.

Rasul Douglas (69) was joined this week by Sidney Jones (52).

Nigel Bradham was hurt this week and limited to just 29 snaps. Zach Brown (58) and Nate Gerry (62) played additional snaps.

Kamu Grugier-Hill (35) played the most he has all season but only saw half the snaps.

Pittsburgh Steelers

High volume superhero Steven Nelson missed the game at CB. Artie Burns (62) stepped in for his biggest day of the season by far.

DE Stephon Tuitt (5) was limited which meant Tyson Alualu (25) played extra.

Mark Barron failed to see the field this week and Vince Williams (38) also did not play a full game. Devin Bush (55) is the only trustworthy LB on the roster.

Seattle Seahawks

Rookie DE LJ Collier played just five snaps this week. He’s seen just 41 snaps so far.

All three LBs again played a heavy load. Bobby Wagner (69) and K.J. Wright are the best options, but financial wizard Mychal Kendricks (59) is useful too.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers have played just 102 defensive snaps across their past two games. They are a low volume defense.

Dee Ford recorded two sacks this week but only played 22 snaps. He’s averaging just 24 snaps per game with Nick Bosa on 38 per. It’s hard to trust a guy getting 24 snaps each week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs played alarmingly inconsistently in London against the Panthers. This is a strange defense.

Devin White returned at LB to play 65 snaps next to Lavonte David (66).

Shaq Barrett (51) continues to endure the inevitable regression. He has failed to record a single pressure in the past two games, let alone a sack.

Safety Mike Edwards missed this game, with Andrew Adams (65) stepping in to play next to Jordan Whitehead (61).

Tennessee Titans

Adoree’ Jackson (32) continues to be a part-time player. This is fair. He’s not that good even though he can run fast.

Jayon Brown took a knock and played just three snaps this week at LB. Wesley Woodyard (59) came right back in to play his biggest game of the year.

Washington Redskins

Washington failed to convince even against Miami. They were one play away from losing to the 2019 Dolphins.

LB Shaun Dion Hamilton (32) did pick up snaps this week, with Cole Holcomb (45) and Jon Bostic (59) also failing to play anywhere near full-time. Don’t start any of them.

Good luck everyone!
