Fantasy Stat Pack: End-of-Season Wrap-Up

Ryan McDowell

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed a series of tweets I share on a weekly basis regarding player and team defensive performances, all from a fantasy lens. I’m going to be sharing some of that same information with you here.

I use this each week as I am making my own lineup and waiver wire decisions and thought you might find this valuable as well.

Note: The scoring system used for this data is always PPR with four points for passing touchdowns.

All year to date fantasy ranks are based on total points.

Quarterbacks

Week Seventeen QB1s (top 12 scorers)

The madness that is a normal Week 17 didn’t greatly impact the quarterback position as many of the “regulars” filled the weekly top 12 scorers. It was a good week for rookie quarterbacks named Allen as the Bills’ Josh enjoyed the best game of his career, accounting for five touchdowns while Panthers Kyle, an undrafted free agent, drew the start and played well before suffering an injury.

Year to Date QB1s

Week 17 did bring a lot of shakeup for the season-long QB1 standings. In his must-win game, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck moved from QB7 to QB5 and Rams Jared Goff also moved up two spots, finishing as the QB7. Aaron Rodgers left his game early with a concussion and veteran Drew Brees sat out, costing both two spots each in the final 2018 ranks. Dak Prescott surprisingly played the entire game and jumped into the QB1 range as the QB10, replacing the injured Cam Newton.

QB1 Games this Season

  • 13 Patrick Mahomes
  • 12 Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan
  • 11 Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson
  • 10 Ben Roethlisberger
  • 9
  • 8 Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Philip Rivers

Most QB1 Games Allowed

  • 10 ATL, KC, TB
  • 9 NO
  • 8 CIN, NYJ, PHI, SF, WAS
  • 7 GB, JAX, MIA, NE
  • 6 BAL, CAR, CLE, DEN, HOU, LAR, NYG, OAK, PIT, SEA
  • 5 ARI, DET, IND, LAC, TEN
  • 4 CHI
  • 3 BUF, DAL, MIN

As expected, most teams that struggled to defend the quarterback position have now been eliminated with the exception of the high-scoring Chiefs and Saints. There is no clear team to target for those building fantasy teams for the playoffs. The Cowboys have allowed just three QB1 games all season and will be at home, making for a tough matchup for Seattle’s Russell Wilson.

Running Backs

Week Seventeen RB1s (top 12 scorers)

The running back position was potentially the most impacted by the week 17 chaos with many top players resting, resulting in backups cracking the top 12. Rookie Royce Freeman took advantage of the injury to Broncos starter Phillip Lindsay to post the first RB1 game of his career.

Year to Date RB1s

Playing the full game in the final week while others sat vaulted rookie Saquon Barkley to the top spot for the end of season rankings, though there were few changes otherwise. The injury to Lindsay pushed him out of the RB1 group, replaced by Chicago’s Tarik Cohen.

RB1 Games this Season

  • 12 Saquon Barkley, Todd Gurley
  • 11 Christian McCaffrey
  • 10 Alvin Kamara
  • 9 Melvin Gordon
  • 8 Ezekiel Elliott
  • 7 James Conner, James White, Joe Mixon
  • 6 Kenyan Drake

Most RB1 Games Allowed

  • 11 ARI, ATL
  • 10 CIN
  • 9 KC, MIA
  • 8 LAC, NYG, SEA
  • 7 BUF, CLE, IND, PHI
  • 6 DAL, DEN, DET, HOU, NYJ, TB
  • 5 CAR, CHI, GB, JAX, NO, OAK, SF
  • 4 BAL, LAR, MIN, NE, PIT, WAS
  • 3 TEN

Baltimore’s running backs (and we might include quarterback Lamar Jackson in this group) have the best matchup of this week’s playoff games, based on this data. The Chargers have allowed eight RB1 games on the season, setting up nicely for Jackson, Kenneth Dixon and Gus Edwards. The Seahawks have also given up eight RB1 games, which locks Cowboys back Ezekiel Elliott at the top of the ranks this week.

Meanwhile, the Chargers have a difficult matchup across the board but that will be headlined by Melvin Gordon as the Ravens have surrendered just four RB1 games all year.

Wide Receivers

Week Seventeen WR1s (top 12 scorers)

As he has done at other points in the year, second-year wideout Chris Godwin took advantage of the absence of veteran receiver DeSean Jackson and had a monster game, scoring twice and finishing as the overall WR1.

Year to Date WR1s

The final regular season WR1 group saw a major shakeup in week 17 as the majority of these players played a full game. DeAndre Hopkins moved from the WR4 to the WR1 for the season while Tyreek Hill (WR6-WR3), Julio Jones (WR7-WR4) and Stefon Diggs (WR12-WR10) also jumped up. Antonio Brown infamously missed the Steelers finale and fell from WR2 to WR5. Michael Thomas and Adam Thielen took slight hits in their final standing as well.

WR1 Games this Season

  • 10 Julio Jones
  • 9
  • 8 Davante Adams, Adam Thielen, DeAndre Hopkins, Antonio Brown, Mike Evans, Michael Thomas
  • 7 Tyreek Hill
  • 6 Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs
  • 5 Juju Smith-Schuster, Odell Beckham, Brandin Cooks

Most WR1 Games Allowed

  • 13 NO
  • 12 CAR
  • 11 TB
  • 10 GB, PHI
  • 9
  • 8 ARI, ATL, DET, LAR
  • 7 CIN, CLE, MIA, SEA, SF, TEN, WAS
  • 6 KC, NYJ, PIT
  • 5 BAL, CHI, DEN, NYG
  • 4 DAL, HOU, JAX, NE, OAK
  • 3 BUF, LAC
  • 2 MIN
  • 1 IND

The Eagles have allowed ten WR1 games this season, which could help the banged-up Allen Robinson start the playoffs the right way. The Colts have still allowed just one WR1 all season. Not surprisingly, that one was Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who hopes to sting them again this week.

Tight Ends

Week Seventeen TE1s (top 12 scorers)

After failing to score a touchdown in his career, Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin found the end zone three times. Sometimes, week 17 just doesn’t make sense. Giants tight end Evan Engram continued his strong performance with receiver Odell Beckham out of the lineup, finishing as the TE3.

Year to Date TE1s

No player moved up or down more than one spot and the top five tight ends for the season have essentially been locked in for weeks. Let’s hope for a better look from the tight end group in 2019.

TE1 Games this Season

  • 13 Travis Kelce
  • 12 George Kittle, Zach Ertz
  • 11 Eric Ebron
  • 10
  • 9
  • 8 Trey Burton
  • 7 Evan Engram, O.J. Howard

Most TE1 Games Allowed

  • 11 IND, KC, TB
  • 10 CLE
  • 9 HOU
  • 8 CAR, CIN, DAL, NE, PIT
  • 7 ATL, JAX, LAC, OAK
  • 6 BAL, CHI, DET, GB, LAR, MIA, WAS
  • 5 ARI, DEN, MIN, NYG
  • 4 SEA, SF
  • 3 BUF, NO, NYJ, TEN, PHI

The Colts have played amazing defense against wideouts but have struggled against opposing tight ends. That could allow for Texans Ryan Griffin and his rookie backups to put up a nice stat line this weekend. The Texans have also been hit for a high number of TE1 games, which is great news for veteran Eric Ebron.

The Eagles and Seahawks are among the toughest defenses for opposing tight ends. Cowboy Blake Jarwin and Bears Trey Burton could be in for a long game against these defenses.

Finally, here’s the full defensive chart you might’ve already seen on Twitter.
