Developing Assets: Week Six

Ryan McDowell

Whether you are a devy dynasty owner tracking your player or simply trying to stay ahead of your competition when prepping for 2019 rookie drafts, following the weekly world of college football can pay dividends for fantasy players.

Each week this season, I’ll focus on a trio of games throughout the day, along with some key future pros you might want to focus on as you watch.

Wake Up and Watch

Texas at Oklahoma (FOX, 12:00)

The annual battle at the Texas State Fair takes center stage early on this Saturday and both teams are surging. Things are finally clicking for the Longhorns. Freshman backup running back Keaontay Ingram is off to a good start and is a future pro. He’s rushed for over 200 yards on 34 carries and has been involved in the passing game as well, with ten catches already this season.

Another freshman, receiver Brennan Eagles, has received little playing time, but is a name to store away. He was one of the nation’s top recruits at the positions. Junior receiver Collin Johnson, a 6’6”, 230 pounder is an ideal WR1 prospect. He’s second on the team with 24 receptions for 350 yards.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has been fantastic this season and is one of the favorites for the Heisman trophy as the season nears the midway point. Along with Murray’s 1,460 passing yards, he also has rushed for 285 yards. Murray’s top target has been junior receiver Marquise Brown, who has been an underrated playmaker for the Sooners but is now starting to show up in the first round of some mock drafts.

The Sooners are stacked at every position. Even after losing running back Rodney Anderson for the season, sophomore Trey Sermon has stepped in and now leads the team in rushing. Sophomore receiver CeeDee Lamb is the other player to watch and will contend to be the top receiver drafted in fantasy drafts in 2020. He’s tied with Brown for the team lead with five touchdown receptions.

Other teams in early action include:

Alabama at Arkansas (ESPN, 12:00)

Maryland at Michigan (ABC, 12:00)

Kansas at West Virginia (ESPN2, 12:00)

Midday Marquee

Florida State at Miami (ABC, 3:30)

It has been a down year for the Seminoles, but they are back above .500 with a 3-2 record and records don’t matter much anyway in a rivalry game like this one. Despite Florida State’s poor start, they have some young players that all devy and dynasty owners should be watching closely.

Running back Cam Akers is getting a heavy workload and is still the top overall devy player according to many. My favorite receiver for the Noles is freshman Tamorrion Terry, who has gotten involved early. He’s got 11 receptions for 248 yards, serving as a big play threat for Florida State.

The Hurricanes are off to a 4-1 start and looking to continue their winning ways. No one stands out with gaudy numbers in this balanced offense but running back Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas are both players to keep an eye on, while receiver Jeff Thomas has established himself as the team’s top threat.

I also really like what I’ve seen from tight end Brevin Jordan though he’s just a freshman, so we have a long wait before he hits the league. The Canes are still without receiver Ahmmon Richards, who has gone from projected first-round dynasty rookie pick to likely staying in school another year due to injuries.

Other teams in mid-day action include:

LSU at Florida (CBS, 3:30)

Iowa State at Oklahoma State (ESPN2, 3:30)

Iowa at Minnesota (Big Ten Network, 3:30)

Arizona State at Colorado (PAC 12 Network, 4:00)

Primetime Play

Kentucky at Texas A&M (ESPN, 7:00)

This one is a just a little self-indulgent as my home team Kentucky Wildcats are one of the nation’s biggest surprises. The main reason for their 5-0 start is running back Benny Snell. The junior running back is essentially Kentucky’s entire offense, leading the nation with 115 carries. Snell is also top four in the country in rushing yards and touchdowns.

The Aggies have a strong NFL prospect in the backfield as well. Junior Trayveon Williams is on pace for career-best numbers, which is saying a lot of a player who entered the season with over 2,100 yards and 16 touchdowns through his first two years in the SEC.

Dual-threat quarterback Kellen Mond has been one of the huge stories around the SEC in the early going. Unfortunately, Mond will be without sophomore receiver Jhamon Ausbon, one of my personal favorites. Ausbon required surgery to repair a foot injury and is out indefinitely. I’ll be using this chance to go shopping for the talented receiver in all of my devy leagues.

Other teams with evening games include:

Vanderbilt at Georgia (SEC Network, 7:30)

Auburn at Mississippi State (ESPN2, 7:30)

Washington at UCLA (FOX, 7:30)

Utah at Stanford (ESPN, 10:30)
