The DLF Mailbag

Welcome back to the DLF Mailbag! Let’s get to your questions.

1. I currently have Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Baker Mayfield. Roster limit is three quarterbacks and I have Winston coming off his suspension. I’m shopping Mayfield and Winston. I think I’d rather keep Mayfield, but what can I reasonably expect to get for either?

Ken,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but in a ten-team non-ppr league where you only start one quarterback, I just don’t think you’re going to get much trade value for either of those two. In your league, only the top ten quarterbacks are being started each week and neither Winston or Mayfield qualify. There are about 25 quarterbacks right now that you can feel comfortable starting so in a ten-team league where you only start one, they just aren’t that valuable. I think your absolute best return in terms of rookie pick value is a mid-second round pick for both players.

You’re probably not going to like this much but I think I would try to capitalize on all the Patrick Mahomes hype and see if you can move him for a starter at running back or wide receiver and then plan on starting Wilson most weeks with Mayfield and Jameis getting in there when they have better matchups.

Mahomes is awesome and could very well be the QB1 overall right now but in leagues that only start one, I’d much rather cash that value in for a player at a more important position. I’d start poking around to see if you can get another owner in your league to swap an elite or even a second tier running back or wide receiver. You won’t be too far off of Mahomes’ production by streaming the three you have left based on matchups. If you don’t want to do that – and I get it – then I’d sell two of your other three for whatever you can get.

One last thing. If you and everyone else in the league like having positional roster limits, that’s cool, but I think it’s one of the worst settings you can have in a league. Fantasy GMs should be allowed to build their team how they see fit which is impossible with position limits. If you aren’t a fan of being told how many of a certain position you can have, I’d suggest bringing it up to your commissioner so that it can be voted on.

2. I have two second round picks in 2019 and a first, second, and third in both 2020 and 2021. Le’Veon Bell is on the trade block with a seven-year contract at $44 per year in a $400 salary cap league. After the 2018 season, Bell has three years left before he must be released or franchised.

I currently have Devonta Freeman, Peyton Barber, C.J. Anderson, Corey Grant, Lataviuus Murray, Chris Warren, and Marcus Murphy on my roster. The team with Bell wants two firsts and position player. I really want Bell, but I just don’t know if I should give up that much for him. What should I do?

Steve,

It’s tough to give specific advice without knowing more information like if you’re a contender or what your cap situation is so I’ll just advise based solely on the value of the trade. First up, you want him and that means something. If you want to make this deal and you are ok with the price, then do it. That’s all that matters.

In terms of the contract value, three-plus seasons at 11% of your cap is pretty nice for a player who can put up the points Bell can. That’s, of course, assuming you believe Bell won’t miss a beat once he gets back on the field whether it’s for the Steelers or some other team. I recently purchased Bell for one 2019 first, one 2019 second, and two 2019 thirds but I don’t think you can get that price anymore with the news he intends to report to the team in a couple weeks and unfortunately, you don’t have a 2019 first. I typically reduce the value of picks two years out by one round and picks two years out by two rounds. That means your 2020 first is really worth a 2019 second and your 2020 first is worth a 2019 third.

With those values in mind, I think if you can get Bell for your two future firsts and a player then you profit in the short term. It’s hard to know what player to offer along with the picks since I only know your running backs but based on that list I’d be more than ok giving up anyone other than Devonta Freeman.

Go get your boy if you want him.
