All the Single Players

Bobby Koch

You’re likely reading this after May 12th, 2018. That means at this point I’m married! However, before I got married I wanted to write down some thoughts I had. Oh, you were expecting thoughts about life? No, of course not. I’m going to write my last thoughts about fantasy football before I’m a married man.

Specifically, I’m going to focus on undervalued players according to May ADP that you should be committing to. Sure, you can keep chasing that young sexy thing (looking at you DeVante Parker, Dorial-Green Beckham, and similar others of the past) but at some point, don’t you want to settle down?

These are the players who – if you like them enough to put a ring on it – will put a championship ring on you. Let’s meet these fine fellows!

Marvin Jones, WR DET

Perhaps one of our most desirable players. Contestant number one, Marvin Jones step on down! We have seen a course correction with Marvin in recent months. In fact, he’s come all the way from being in the 100s in November to ADP of 59.67 now. So why am I still writing about him?

Well, according to the most recent ADP Jones is the 26th receiver off the board. He’s going behind the likes of Sammy Watkins and Cooper Kupp. I know there are many Sammy truthers still out there but let me show you why Jones should be going ahead of at least these two.

Since joining the Lions in 2016, Jones is one of 16 players to have achieved 2,000 receiving yards over the past two seasons. Among those listed, he’s tied for seventh in touchdowns and has the highest yards per reception. You may notice that he also has the lowest amount of receptions by far on this list and that does impact him in PPR formats. However, despite his low reception total of 61 last season, he still managed to finish as the WR11 in PPR formats.

One key thing I look for when I say players are being undervalued is if they have a track record have they shown consistent improvement? The answer with Marvin is clearly yes. Since 2013, if you don’t include his lost 2014 seasons, he’s managed new career highs in receiving yards every single season.

The volume he’s getting from Matthew Stafford isn’t going anywhere either. He’s the player Stafford looks to when he wants to take a deep shot and I’d gladly take the WR1A/1B on the Lions over someone like Watkins who may be the third option at best on a team turning to a second-year quarterback.

Quincy Enunwa, WR NYJ

Now I know what you may be thinking. Why would I ever want someone who plays their games for Gang Green? Just thinking about makes me feel dirty.

Well, let me reintroduce you to contestant number two, Quincy Enunwa. Sure, Enunwa may have just missed the entire 2017 season with a neck injury, but at least he isn’t in legal trouble like some other unattached fantasy players in his neighborhood. So, what does Quincy like besides Pina Coladas and singing in the rain?

Well, how about racking up receiving yards and scoring touchdowns? I know that his WR43 finish in 2016 wasn’t the most impressive. However, he’s currently being valued at WR73 after the likes of Zay Jones, Tre’Quan Smith, and Equanimeous St. Brown.

Just remember that Enunwa is still only 26 and has the size to be the prototypical WR1 type for Sam Darnold. He also already has an 800 receiving yard season under his belt in which he showed flashes with a few huge games. If you can get a WR1 or even WR2 that cheap in your drafts, they’re worth a few movie dinner dates.

Rishard Matthews, WR TEN

This next single player is ready to shake and bake defenders for you all day long. Rishard Matthews never quite impressed in his career until he teamed up with Marcus Mariota in 2016 and finished as the PPR WR20. It was wheels up for Matthews, and then the Titans went after a younger sexier model in Corey Davis.

Last season saw a downturn for Matthews as he finished with five fewer touchdowns than the previous year and 150 fewer receiving yards – though you do need to keep in mind that he missed two games with a hamstring injury. In fact, so did Davis and Mariota. Maybe they took one too many long walks on the beach as a team last season.

I have higher expectations for the Titans offense this year since Mike Mularkey was finally let go, and they’ve brought in Matt LaFleur to be their offensive coach. You may remember LaFleur as the OC for the explosive Rams offense last season.

I know many expect Corey Davis to be ‘the guy’ this season, and so do I. However, I’m fully confident that Marcus Mariota can support multiple high-end fantasy assets. At WR75 prices, you can do a lot worse than taking a chance on this soon to be 29-year-old.

Albert Wilson, WR MIA

You’d think I’d be telling you to stay away from Miami. With its reputation for partying, that seems more like the place to find a player to have fun with but not to commit, right? I wish I could tell you Dolphins that mate for life, but as Discovery Channel has informed me in detail, that’s not the case.

So why should you commit to having contestant number four, Albert Wilson, on your fantasy team? Well, you may or not have heard that this player named Jarvis Landry just left the team for the Browns. That’s a big deal because Landry has been the top man for the team since he was drafted in 2014.

You probably don’t want to hear that someone you’re about to commit to is slotty, but that’s exactly what Wilson is. He fills the same role that Landry did, and could easily be the benefactor of the 100+ targets left behind by Landry. I know some of you may be worried about Danny Amendola, but this is one of the cases where I think you should be “cradle robbing”. Wilson checks in as the WR88 after Mohamed Sanu and Terrelle Pryor. At this price, he’s well worth it.

Amara Darboh, WR SEA

Do you think Amara Darboh really loves Sleepless in Seattle? Who am I kidding? It’s a classic, who doesn’t.

You may want to rush to the top of the Empire State Building to meet Darboh yourself. I know there are currently reports that the Seahawks may sign Brandon Marshall, but at this point, Amara “Amore” Darboh could end up the WR2 for the Seahawks. Tyler “Heart” Lockett may stand in his way, but the one thing Darboh has going for him that other Seahawks pass catchers don’t is that he has size.

Please look at this chart courtesy of Scott Fish

Seattle is missing the most red zone targets from last year of any team. This means very good things for Darboh if he can get into the regular rotation. At WR104, he shouldn’t cost you more than a fourth-round rookie pick to find out if he can be the Meg Ryan to your fantasy team’s Tom Hanks.

Conclusion

I was looking for a good way to end this and Salvatore Stefanile provided the perfect inspiration as a wedding gift. Repeat after me: I, fantasy football player, take you (your favorite sleeper name goes here) to be my long-term fantasy asset until roster crunch, injury, or great trade offer do us part.

See you on the other side of making a much larger commitment,

Rek
