Breaking Down 2QB Dynasty ADP

Ryan McDowell

I might be a bit biased, but I feel that dynasty average draft position (ADP) data is one of the most valuable tools a dynasty player can have. Unfortunately, the number of tools available for players preferring 2QB or super-flex leagues is limited. It is for that reason I recently chose to conduct a series of four mock drafts to gauge the dynasty value of players in this growing league format as the 2017 season draws to a close.

In case you’re not familiar with the idea of a super-flex or 2QB league, they simply offer participants the option of starting an additional quarterback in their weekly lineup. While this might seem like a simple and straightforward adjustment, it is one that rocks the foundation of the league, including how owners build and manage their teams. In some ways, it is as simple as saying “quarterbacks are worth a lot more,” but in other ways, the changes are much more complex.

Personally, I tend to treat quarterbacks in this format as I do wide receivers in a typical league. I want as many top end quarterbacks as I can get and they usually make up the majority of my cornerstone draft picks when building a team.

Next, I’ll go round-by-round, sharing the end of season 2QB ADP we’ve formed with some brief thoughts for the first few rounds.

In the opening round, we see an even distribution between the top three positions. As I mentioned, I build my 2QB teams around the quarterback position and would rarely consider any other player over a first round signal caller.

I’m actually slightly surprised to see both Odell Beckham and DeAndre Hopkins ahead of the top quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. This possibly happened due to the sudden depth in the top quarterback tier. Having multiple options, including several young players, might actually slightly ding the value of the top of the tier players.

Through two rounds, we still see a near equal balance between the positions while the top tight ends are among the victims of increased quarterback value. Included in this round is one of the most difficult players to value right now in this 2QB format, injured Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. He clearly has major upside, but he’s a player I’d avoid at this cost.

Three rounds in and the wide receiver depth is beginning to show as the top quarterbacks and running backs are nearly gone. This tells me I can spend my first pick or two on quarterbacks and still be left with very reliable options at the receiver spot.

Even after hitting a new tier of quarterbacks, the position still made up half of the fourth round as owners wasted no time in adding their second quarterback within the first four picks. Looking at some specific players, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo stands out as he continues to gain value. I wouldn’t be surprised if he climbs into the second round of 2QB leagues very soon.

In the fifth round, we see the depth of the receivers really begin to overshadow the third tiers and beyond of other positions. One of the two quarterbacks coming off the board here is rookie Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs. It is widely assumed that veteran Alex Smith will be gone from Kansas City and Mahomes value will continue to climb. At QB18, he might look like a steal in the near future.
