DLF’s 2017 IDP Predictions: Fantasy Rookie of the Year

Eric Olinger

At this time of year there is absolutely no shortage of fantasy football articles, information, metrics and ADP but it always comes back to one question: “who are you drafting/avoiding?” We get a lot of those kinds of tweets and predictions are my favorite part of the preseason. If you have as many hits as you did misses you did great but nobody remembers the hits. Instead, you’ll be crucified for that one miss…and I love it. So I asked my DLF brethren to give me their IDP predictions for 2017. We’ll undoubtedly have some of those hits and misses so let’s get right to them. Today we’re focusing on the “IDP Rookie of the Year.”

Reuben Foster, LB SF

My brethren are probably all taking Lions rookie linebacker Jarrad Davis. It’s a safe bet. Wrong, but safe. It’s not like I’m going out on a limb with Foster either but I think the odds are higher that Foster nabs this one. – Doug Green

I’m just going to say Foster will play all 16 games and be a beast next to NaVorro Bowman.  The Malcolm Smith injury was a blessing for Foster and his owners as from week one on he’ll showcase how he became the steal of the 2017 NFL Draft and multiple teams will regret passing him up.  Foster has a top 12 ceiling as he’s going to eat in the bay. – Brandon “Bee” Salamat

Reuben Foster, LB SF

If you read my glowing review of “The Reuben Missile Crisis”, you could have inked him as my Defensive Rookie of the Year. See: Foster, Reuben. – Bob Brannon

Reuben Foster, LB SF

Not much of a shock here, but Foster could walk on as the highest producing linebacker in San Francisco. Yes, NaVorro Bowman is there and might be healthy, but I think his better days are behind him. – Adam Tzikas

Reuben Foster, LB SF

Foster is a great talent and maybe the best coverage LB in this year’s draft class. Make no mistake about it, coverage ability (and therefore opportunities to make plays) is what powers IDP linebackers.  He had a nightmare draft season but landed in a spot where he’ll be left on the field for as many snaps as he can handle.  I love him as an IDP prospect.. – Tom Kislingbury

Reuben Foster, LB SF

The injury to Malcolm Smith opens the door for Foster to provide both short-term and long-term production. Fresh off an extraordinary final season at Alabama that featured 115 tackles, two passes defended and five sacks, he lands in San Francisco and could end up being the face of the franchise and an anchor they’ve sorely needed ever since Patrick Willis retired. Foster slid all the way to pick #31  in the 2017 NFL Draft and the 49ers jumped at the chance to trade up and add him, stopping what was widely considered a very surprising slide in the NFL Draft. There are some off the field concerns that contributed to his slide. He failed his NFL Draft Combine drug test due to a diluted sample and was later sent home after getting into an altercation with a hospital employee. There were also some concerns over a shoulder injury that some feared was much more serious than previously believed. Foster has seemingly answered those questions thus far and looks ready to go this year. A hard hitter with playmaking ability and great range, this rookie looks like a scoring machine for a defense that promises to be on the field a lot early in his career. – Ken Kelly

Jabrill Peppers, S CLE

Let me be clear, as a San Francisco 49ers fan I am hoping and believing Reuben Foster walks away with this award but since everyone else picked him I’ll zig where they zag. Peppers brings an incredibly unique skill set to the NFL and lands with a defensive coordinator who knows how to maximize the pieces given to him. With Peppers offering touchdown potential on special teams and the occasional offensive gadget play, he could very easily end up in the upper half of DB1s as a rookie. – Eric Olinger

Reuben Foster ran away with this award as nobody outside of Jabrill Peppers even received a single vote. There are questions about Foster but he’s answered them so far. If he can reach his massive potential, the 49ers got themselves a top ten pick at a late first round price. There are other players like Jarrad Davis, Haason Redick and Jamal Adams who could have been considered as well. Who is your pick for IDP Rookie of the Year? Let us know in the comments below!
