IDP Rookie Tracker: Week 1

Doug Green

Hey everyone, we’re back for the first in-season IDP Rookie Tracker. We had some good and some bad for our 15 youngsters. Let’s see how they did.

Myles Garrett: As I said last week, he’s expected to miss some time with an injury. The Browns took the loss but it was easy to see they were an improved team.

Jabrill Peppers: Like I said, the Browns defense looked good and Peppers was at the heart of that. He had four tackles, three punt returns for 11 yards and a kickoff return for 14. He also had a fumble recovery, but that was off his own muff. You’ll get a little bit of everything with Peppers.

Duke Riley: Riley played 49 snaps and had five tackles, three solos. Much like the rest of the Falcons defense, Riley was good, but not great. They really should have been better against a sputtering Bears offense, maybe Sunday night at home will get Riley and the Falcons juices flowing.

Jamal Adams: If you watched this game, you are a braver person than I am. On 75 snaps Adams had five tackles, four solos. He and fellow rookie Marcus Maye swap spots back and forth between free and strong safety, which will limit both men’s numbers.

Jayon Brown: Brown only saw 37 snaps, but had four tackles, with three solos. I thought Brown might see some more snaps, but his Week 1 usage seems more like he’ll be a sub guy early on this season.

Zach Cunningham:  Ok, so Week 1 wasn’t all Cunningham, but with Brian Cushing in concussion protocol and a short turnaround for a Thursday night game, odds are Cunningham is going to see significant snaps. This week he only got 21, but had four tackles, no solos, during that stint.

With Brian Cushing’s suspension, Cunningham will be the man to replace him. His snap counts go through the roof and I expect Cunningham to not give the job back.

Derek Barnett: Barnett played only 26 of a possible 63 snaps and recorded just two tackles. He got the same amount of snaps as Chris Long, but that was significantly less Brandon Graham (43) and Vinny Curry (37). It was kind of a slow start, but we’ll see if he does better this week against the Chiefs.

Jonathan Allen: The good news is Allen played the most snaps of any Washington defensive lineman with 42. The less good news is he only had four tackles, three solos. It’s clear that he’s going to be a key part of the front seven, now he just need to get the production to climb.

Reuben Foster: That was not the start everyone was hoping for. Foster sprained his ankle and therefore played just 11 snaps but recorded three tackles and almost had an interception in that time. Foster did try and put himself back in the game, but that didn’t happen. He’s expected to miss the next couple of weeks. Hopefully he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

Solomon Thomas: Thomas played 43 snaps, second most on the defensive line, but recorded just two tackles for his efforts. Defensive ends are a bit up and down in production, however he gets the porous Seattle offensive line this week, so perhaps Week 2 will be more to his liking.

Jarrad Davis: Everyone said Davis landed in a perfect spot for opportunity and he took full advantage in his first NFL game. Playing all 75 snaps, Davis turned in nine tackles, all solos, along with a fumble he recovered and returned 16 yards. He’s a solid plug and play LB2 at this point and should only improve.

Haason Reddick: Reddick played 41 of a possible 71 snaps which yielded eight tackles with six solos, good for second most on the team. With David Johnson going down, the defense will be asked to hold the scoring down. Reddick will need to pick up his pace to help compensate.

Budda Baker: Yeah, so my guy didn’t do so hot. He played only two snaps and his stat line is just someone hitting the 0 key over and over. Since we’re being optimistic with everyone else, no point stopping now. Baker should improve as the season goes on, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on his snap count.

Charles Harris: I have been following football since the late 80s when I was in junior high and have been writing about fantasy for the past five years. I’ve never had a player be hurricane-ed out before. That’s the case with Harris though. His Week 1 will take place Week 11. The Dolphins will finally get their season under way against the Chargers.

Taco Charlton: Last but not least is Charlton. What can I say about him? Um, he played? Charlton had the third-most snaps among defensive linemen (26), but didn’t record a single stat. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. This week Dallas travels to Denver for Charlton to get another chance.
