Urban Cowboy

Tony Romo has been officially released by the Dallas Cowboys, paving the way for him to join CBS as an NFL analyst. Romo had been the subject of wild speculation all off-season as various teams were rumored to be interested in his services. In the end, it looks like Romo is serious about hanging up his cleats and moving on to the next stage in his life. The move has far reaching dynasty impact at the moment, so let’s run down the affected parties.

Tony Romo, QB FA

One of the greatest dynasty waiver wire pickups of all-time, Romo finishes (we assume) his career with 34,183 passing yards and 248 touchdowns over 12 seasons, all with Dallas. In some ways, it’s fitting as Romo is an iconic Dallas figure and seeing him on another team would be very strange.

In terms of strategy with Romo, it’s likely safe to let him go. Even if he did have a change of heart, we’re talking about an aging quarterback who has struggled to stay healthy, playing in just five games over the past two years. Landing in Houston or Denver would have been interesting for sure, though counting on him as your QB1 with his recent injury history would have been pretty dangerous.

If you have an extraordinarily deep roster, feel free to hang on to him through the off-season just in case he has a change of heart. However, he’s been paired with Jim Nantz on the “A-team” for CBS and there are no indications he’s going to change his mind. He seems to be at peace for now.

Dak Prescott, QB DAL

Prescott’s ADP has finally stabilized and he’s currently ranked as our QB9 in dynasty leagues. You could say this move helps Prescott, but the writing was clearly on the wall as he’s solidified himself as the quarterback of the present and future in Dallas. He’s a low-end QB1 and not an elite fantasy performer but he’s going to have lots of time to grow and there’s now no need for him to look over his shoulder. He’s a nice target for a young dynasty team to build around, though expecting elite numbers wouldn’t be advised. Take a look at his ADP chart below and you’ll see quite the rise over the past year. While this won’t bump him up much, it’s a pretty amazing start to a career.

Tom Savage, QB HOU

Savage is likely the biggest temporary winner of the Tony Romo retirement as Houston was the most likely landing spot for Romo had he wanted to continue his career. Before you get too comfortable thinking you have a nice little QB2 prospect, keep in mind the Texans are rumored to be very interested in quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes or Mitch Trubisky in the draft. If they take one in the first or second round, Savage will be simply keeping the seat warm. Anyone who owns Savage and is hoping for him to get a legitimate chance to win the job permanently will be on pins and needles during the draft – just expect to get poked.

Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, QBs DEN

If Savage is the biggest temporary winner, Siemian and Lynch are likely the biggest permanent winners. With Romo out of the picture (though it’s debatable just how much interest Denver ever had), it opens the door for a competition this off-season for the keys to the Denver offense. The smart money is likely on Siemian after he performed well, but the team won’t have a tremendous amount of patience with him if things go sour early.

Nobody plays forever and Romo has been a mainstay in dynasty leagues for a long, long time. His production on the field will be missed by many.
