Dynasty Waiver Wire: Week 14

Jeff Haverlack

Welcome to our weekly in-season coverage of waiver wire considerations for this week!

We won’t be forcing waiver wire advice or suggestions.  Instead, expect to see a wide-ranging number of players each week, based solely on increasing snaps, injury or any combination of events that suggest a player’s status could change in the future.  You can expect we will be providing a bit of justification for the addition as well as just how deep the particular player is.  We are only highlighting those players that we believe deserve some level of attention, not merely players who happen to see targets or log a carry. As is always the case in fantasy, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Without further delay, let’s get to your weekly waiver wire additions:

Dwayne Allen, TE NE

After the brutal and purposeful late-hit provided by Rob Gronkowski in Sunday’s game, you can expect the league to act swiftly in suspending Gronkowski for week 14.  By the time you are reading this, word will have likely already come down. Allen has only tallied five receptions in 2017 but he’ll be pressed into duty should the hammer fall on Gronk as expected.  Allen will be a low-end TE2 in a good match-up but only projects as an emergency play for this upcoming week, with little upside following.  Add him if you find yourself in the playoffs without Gronkowski and have no other intriguing options.

Tion Green, RB DET

Another name for the great beyond.  The 6’0/220 lbs. rookie was pressed into action on Sunday with Ameer Abdullah unable to play.  Green tallied just over half of the running back carries and rushed 11 times for 51 yards and a touchdown.  He didn’t record any targets in the passing attack.  Green, out of Cincinnati, wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine but has had a cult following.  He received action in the preseason including a very nice short pass out of the backfield which he converted into a 73 yard touchdown.  He’s a one-cut style of back without much lateral agility in his game, but that style has a place in the Detroit offense lacking in that department.  Look for Green to get more touches in the remaining games.

Interested parties can check out a short Green highlight tape here:

Braxton Miller, WR HOU

Miller was a favorite of mine in 2016 but has yet to really put it together within a depth chart needing help.  He’s finally starting to show and could be worthy of an addition if you have a roster spot to burn.  He’s generated 10 targets over the past two weeks, converting nine of them for 114 yards.  He’s benefiting from the extra attention generated by DeAndre Hopkins on the outside.  That attention should continue but the return of Will Fuller makes for a murky situation at best.

Johnny Holton, WR OAK

I’ve been holding off on Holton until I saw more and this is the week I saw it.  Capitalizing on the absence of both Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, Holton saw seven targets, eclipsing his total on the season.  Holton only brought in three of those receptions but did manage 39 yards and a touchdown.  The return of the primary receivers will send Holton back to four-wide sets but he’s made a claim for the WR3, challenging the butter-fingered Seth Roberts.  He’s a deep stash only at this point but at 6’1″, he’s got decent size on a depth chart needing it.

Nick Vannett, TE SEA

Inside word seems to suggest that the Hawks may let contract-year Jimmy Graham walk in free agency.  Should that occur, Vannett has done enough to immediately step into the starting role.  The second year player continues to make plays in an offense that features Russell Wilson’s legs and escapability far more than it does standard progressions.  Vannett has shown the ability to be productive and is similarly sized to Graham.  He’s a stash and hold until next year while we wait to hear about Seattle’s plan for Graham’s contract.

See you next week!
