Sunday Morning Huddle: Week 17

Ken Kelly

Let’s face it, there’s an enormous amount of information out there on Sunday mornings. We’re not going to waste your time by repeating the news and notes about who’s in or out this week, since that’s really not what you visit us for. We’re also not going to do another article on starts or sits this week – we already have the personalized lineup advice for you on the premium content. Again, there are 100 places you can go for that, so there’s no reason to repeat ourselves or others.

The Sunday Morning Huddle typically goes through each game and states what we’re looking to see from a dynasty perspective. However, week 17 brings us a very unique set of games, as usual. With most leagues done for the year, the interest in every game is somewhat limited. However, we’re not just going to punt this week!  Instead, we’re going to something different and focus more in-depth on three players who have a lot riding on today’s games and merit close attention.

Jimmy Garoppolo, QB SF

Wow.

Since being inserted into the starting lineup in week 13, Jimmy G has been a top ten fantasy quarterback and even better in reality. On the season, he’s posted 1,268 passing yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions in just four games (and one late series). Beyond that, the 49ers have won each game he’s started and simply look like a different team with him at the helm. There’s now no doubt he’s going to stay in San Francisco for the long term either via an extension this off-season or through the franchise tag and an extension next off-season. The trade with New England looks like a coup for the 49ers as they’ve added the player they needed the most – a franchise quarterback. It’s just THAT easy, Cleveland!

Garoppolo comes off a game against the previously indestructible Jaguars defense where he posted 242 passing yards and scored three total touchdowns to play a Rams team today that will be resting many of their starters. Another solid start (even against mostly backups) would likely cement his status as a top ten dynasty quarterback going into next season. It’s been a quick ascension and one patient dynasty owners of Garoppolo have been waiting for.

Keelan Cole, WR JAX

The Jaguars seemingly are going to go all out and win today. If that’s the case, Keelan Cole is squarely in the spotlight for me. Simply put, this undrafted free agent rookie has been unbelievable over the past month with double digit fantasy points in each of his last four games, three touchdowns in the last month and 294 receiving yards in his last two contests. Simply put, he’s been unstoppable.

Cole is likely giving the Jaguars front office some serious pause as to what they do this off-season. Allen Robinson is coming off a torn ACL and finds himself a free agent. The up and down Marqise Lee is going to be a free agent as well. With Allen Hurns coming off two disappointing seasons, it’s fair to wonder if the Jaguars receiving corps moving forward is going to belong to Cole and Dede Westbrook. Another solid game from Cole could very likely change the direction Jacksonville decides to go in the off-season.

With all the hype around Corey Davis, Mike Williams and John Ross this Summer, Cole has emerged as the player who could be the crown jewel receiver from this class. I’d say he’s the likely steal of rookie drafts but as an undrafted free agent, it’s probably he wasn’t even drafted in your dynasty league. This has clearly been one of dynasty’s biggest stories of the year and Cole looks like this year’s waiver wire wonder.

Derrick Henry, RB TEN

Patient dynasty owners have waited two years for Derrick Henry to finally take the helm in Tennessee. Instead, they’ve had to see him get backup carries to an aging DeMarco Murray. With Murray out today, Henry is going to have the backfield all to himself. This is a golden opportunity for Henry to establish himself as the RB1 going into next season. The Titans could easily move on from Murray this off-season and Henry could make that decision an easy one.

Over his two-year career, Henry has posted just 1,183 rushing yards and ten touchdowns but has averaged a healthy 4.6 yards per carry and has had moments of brilliance on just 258 career carries. Tennessee is still in the hunt for a playoff berth and Henry has a big game today. He has looked like the better back for most of the year and a dominant performance today should signal the Henry era in Music City.

These three players could have the most riding on today’s game.  Enjoy week 17 and good luck if you’re finishing up your playoffs!
