Devy Roundup: Week 13

Kyle Holden

The top-two ranked teams in the country rarely lose during the same week, but that is exactly what happened last weekend. Second-ranked Miami was stunned by Pittsburgh on Friday while sixth-ranked Auburn knocked off top-ranked Alabama on Saturday. Stanford also upset Notre Dame, pretty much knocking them out of playoff contention.

You can find the final results of each week 13 game here.

Top Performers

Performances ranked on a 5-star scale

5 stars – Quinton Flowers, QB USF (503 yards passing, 4 TDs, 1 INT, 102 yards rushing, 1 TD)

USF and UCF played a thrilling game last Saturday. Quinton Flowers played exceptionally in the loss, accumulating 600 total yards and five touchdowns.

5 stars – McKenzie Milton, QB UCF (373 yards passing, 4 TDs, 1 INT, 56 yards rushing, 1 TD)

McKenzie Milton was the winning quarterback in the USF/UCF game. Similar to Flowers, Milton accounted for over 400 total yards and five touchdowns. With the win, UCF completed a perfect regular season.

5 stars – Myles Gaskin, RB Washington (192 yards rushing, 4 TDs)

Myles Gaskin and the rest of the Washington Huskies dominated Washington State in this year’s Apple Cup. Gaskin could end up being a second-round value pick in next year’s Dynasty Rookie Drafts, depending on which team he lands with.

5 stars – Jordan Lasley, WR UCLA (12 recs, 227 yards, 1 TD)

Lasley has only played in eight games so far this year, but he has still caught 61 passes for 1,136 yards and eight touchdowns, including back-to-back 200-yard receiving games the past two weeks. He has emerged as quarterback Josh Rosen’s go-to target this season.

Honorable Mentions: Anthony Johnson (6 recs, 155 yards, 2 TDs), Rashaad Penny (203 yards rushing, 2 TDs), Akrum Wadley (159 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 1 rec, 8 yards), Mason Rudolph (438 yards passing, 2 TDs), Demario Richard (165 yards rushing, 2 TDs), Royce Freeman (122 yards rushing, 2 TDs, 2 recs, 20 yards)

Poor Performers

Performances ranked on a 5-star scale

2 stars – Kelvin Harmon, WR N.C. State (1 rec, 21 yards)

After putting together six consecutive games of at least 68 yards receiving, Kelvin Harmon put up a dud on Saturday. I expected more from North Carolina State’s stud wide receiver than just one reception against their North Carolina rival. However, he has had an impressive season and remains one of my favorite devy receivers.

2 stars – John Kelly, RB Tennessee (10 carries, 20 yards rushing, 1 TD, 1 rec, 5 yards)

John Kelly only mustered 20 yards rushing on his ten carries. However, he did have a touchdown to somewhat salvage his disappointing day. Although he has struggled recently, he could still end up being another under-the-radar value pick in next year’s dynasty rookie drafts.

Marquee Matchups

Below are some of the more intriguing Conference Championships on this upcoming week’s slate. You can check out the full Week 14 schedule here.

1.) Stanford @ USC – 12/1 @ 8 PM EST on ESPN/WatchESPN

This Pac-12 Championship features two of the top running back prospects in the 2018 Draft Class, Bryce Love and Ronald Jones. Both have been truly outstanding this year and will probably be key factors in which team wins the game on Saturday.

2.) TCU @ Oklahoma – 12/2 @ 12:30 PM EST on FOX

A win over TCU and Oklahoma is most likely into the playoffs. Baker Mayfield looks to put one final stamp on his spectacular regular season and his Heisman Trophy resume.

3.) Georgia @ Auburn – 12/2 @ 4 PM EST on CBS

Auburn dominated Georgia when the two played each other earlier this year. Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson looks to dominate the ground game once again while Georgia running backs Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, Elijah Holyfield, and D’Andre Swift look to get revenge in this SEC Championship.

4.) Miami @ Clemson – 12/2 @ 8 PM EST on ABC/WatchESPN

The U is officially back. They will play in their first-ever ACC championship since their addition to the conference in 2004. Their opponent, Clemson, looks to win the ACC Championship for the third straight year. Also, be sure to watch talented receivers Ahmmon Richards and Deon Cain.

5.) Ohio State @ Wisconsin – 12/2 @ 8 PM EST on FOX

If you have not watched much of Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor yet this year, do yourself a favor and tune into this Big-10 Championship. Taylor has displayed exceptional power, balance, and vision in his special freshman season. He can really make a name for himself if Wisconsin can find a way to win this game and make the playoffs.

Other News/Notes

Clemson, Auburn, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin are currently the top-four teams that would make the college football playoffs if they began today. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, and Ohio State are the next four on the outside looking in for now.

With Conference Championships coming up this week, there is still time for some teams to sneak into the playoff picture. For instance, Georgia, Miami, and Ohio State could very well make the playoffs if they win their Conference Championship over Auburn, Clemson, and Wisconsin respectively.

Alabama is currently on the outside looking in, something college football fans are not used to. They might need an Oklahoma loss to have a chance of making the playoffs.

It has been a fun journey throughout the 2017 College Football Season. There were many great performances and numerous breakout players who made a name for themselves this season. I hope you enjoyed this Devy Roundup series as much as I did and were able to use it to become more familiar with some Devy players than you were to start the season. As always, thanks for reading.
