IDP Snap Counts: Week Ten

Tom Kislingbury

Hi everyone.

I hope you’re still putting the work in. It can be dispiriting at this time of year and we haven’t seen many major changes, but difference-makers are still out there. You can still maximise your advantage over your leaguemates going into the playoffs.

Arizona Cardinals

Budda Baker fans rejoice! The rookie finally got a chance to play with Tyvon Branch out and made the most of his 44 snaps with nine tackles. I don’t think that sort of stat line is close to what we should expect going forward and the whole situation feels a bit like that of Josh Jones. Budda can be a good player but he’s unlikely to instantly be a superstar.

Atlanta Falcons

Adrian Clayborn eh? I’m sure many of you either benched him or have dropped him already this season. I certainly have. Don’t beat yourself up about it. That crazy six-sack week was not predictable, it won’t happen again and you weren’t silly for missing out. Clayborn only played 42 snaps this week. His average volume for the ast five weeks is just 37 snaps. It was a Black Swan event. Just put it down to the football gods and move on.

Baltimore Ravens

Kamalei Correa got one snap again this week. His past five weeks have seen him play one, seven, two, seven and one snap. If you don’t like him don’t play him but what’s he supposed to do on one snap?

Aside from that there were no major changes and this team is pretty stable.

Buffalo Bills

LB Ramon Humber is back full time now. He played 69 snaps this week. But encouragingly Matt Milano played 14. Although he’s not startable he did enough during his time on the field to carve out a role for himself and the coaches have given him a spot.

Jerry Hughes took a knock this week and missed time at DE. In his absence the Bills basically split snaps between Eddie Yarbrough (46) and Ryan Davis (39). Shaq Lawson got his normal volume of 44 snaps. I thought Shaq looked slow and ponderous by the way. I was super excited by him coming in to the season but he’s been a big disappointment.

Carolina Panthers

[am4show have=’g1;’ guest_error=’sub_message’ user_error=’sub_message’ ]

Corner has been a problem for the Panthers ever since they let Josh Norman walk out the door. James Bradberry has been the one reliable starter this year (521 total snaps) with Captain Munnerlyn in the slot. But Kevan Seymour has been taking playing time away from Daryl Worley and this week out-snapped him 44 to 19.

At DE Mario Adison continues to be the number one option. Over the past two weeks, he’s played 91 snaps. The next highest volume is Julius peppers with just 54. Over the last four games Addison has 3.5 sacks and Peppers just 1.0. Peppers was crazy efficient earlier in the year but it was never going to last.

Chicago Bears

Danny Trevathan was a late inactive this week. In his absence Christian Jones stepped into the top LB role with 66 snaps. Nick Kwiatkowski also returned from injury with 35.

Those weights are important. All season long the Bears have had one every-down inside linebacker and another who’s used more sparingly. Kwiatkowski had a very good statistical week but the number two LB has only been a top 24 LB in three of the Bears’ nine games this season. I expect Trevathan to be fit again this week and him to be the only option I want to start going forward.

Cincinnati Bengals

Corner is a mess this year for the Bengals with five (!) players getting weekly snaps. Week ten was the third week in a row that all five of those players played at least 27 snaps. The order in which I’m interested in them is:

  1. Dre Kirkpatrick
  2. Darqueze Dennard
  3. William Jackson III
  4. Josh Shaw
  5. Adam Jones

With Vontaze Burfict ejected from the game, Vincent Rey stepped in to play 73 snaps. Nick Vigil played an absurd 90 snaps. He’s had 170 snaps in the last two weeks alone now and 312 in the last four games.

Cleveland Browns

Jamie Collins is out for the season after he injured his knee. This is a huge shame but in reality he’s not had a good year. In NFL or IDP terms. I was high on him in the off-season because I thought he’d be one of Gregg Williams’ pair of every-down LBs. But he wasn’t. He was a weapon that was moved all around the defense whilst Christian Kirksey and Joe Schobert manned the main spots. Some people are expecting James Burgess to step up but I can’t really see it.

I think the defense will get a bit more interesting with a couple of players moving around more to compensate for Collins. The holy grail would be Jabril Peppers being asked to do more than simply play deep safety.

Dallas Cowboys

Sean Lee got hurt during this game and only managed eight snaps. Anthony Hitchens stepped up in his absence to play 62 snaps. Jaylon Smith also played 50 snaps which was his highest figure since week four. He only played 17 snaps in each of the last two games.

With Lee expected to be out a few weeks Hitchens is a sneaky add if available.

At safety Xavier Woods continues to impress as he plays more. He had 32 snaps this week compared to Jeff Heath’s 45. Woods is clearly on the rise.

Denver Broncos

Rookie DE Zach Kerr played a career-high 30 snaps this week. He’d only played 37 for the season before this week. Correspondingly Derek Wolfe and Adam Gotsis both lost playing time. This may well have been a desperation move as the Broncos were shellacked at home by the Patriots. Don’t make any rash decisions based on this week.

Detroit Lions

It was a high-volume week for the Lions as a whole (coming straight after a very low volume week) so plenty of players saw increases.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin took a knock and missed out at LB which saw Nick Bellore step into 29 snaps. Neither of them are on the IDP radar.

Ziggy Ansah missed out this week… hang on why do you care? Surely you sold him weeks ago when I first started telling you he was only a rotational part and wouldn’t be any good?

Green Bay Packers

Ahmad Brooks returned to fitness this week with 27 snaps. He’d been missing since week five. Interestingly neither Clay Matthews (52) nor Nick Perry lost playing time (48). Morgan Burnett did miss the week so this is a great example of how flexible the Packers are. We call Josh Jones and Morgan Burnett safeties but they spend a lot of time as LBs and in the slot. It’s proving very tough to predict how they’ll line up week to week so you need to accept you’ll have some dud weeks.

Houston Texans

LB Zach Cunningham only played 27 snaps this week due to injury. In his absence Jelani Jenkins saw 31 and Brian Peters played 15. Jenkins is an interesting name if Cunningham misses out again this week.

Indianapolis Colts

With Henry Anderson out for the season, both Margus Hunt (51) and Jonathan Hankins (53) added significant playing time. In deep leagues they’re both on the radar now.

Matthias Farley (66), Jon Bostic (66) and Antonio Morrison (39) have been solid starters all season but with Clayton Geathers activated from IR this week you should be wary. Geathers will have a role and either Farley or Morrison is likely to suffer.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Last week was an amazingly low-volume game for the Jags but everyone was back up to normal levels this week. Most of the players saw individual stats return to something more normal (with a nod of commiseration to Yannick Ngakoue owners).

Marcell Dareus was still a fairly minor part of the defensive plan. He saw 26 snaps which was 36% of the total. Last week he played 12 snaps which was 31%. I normally hate to deal in percentages but it’s useful here.

Kansas City Chiefs

Bye week.

Los Angeles Chargers

After many weeks of low usage, Jatavis Brown led the team in snaps at LB with 53. That’s not amazing given some players played over 80 but it’s certainly a positive step. Denzel Perryman returned from injury to play 46 snaps which was also very positive – even with Hayes Pullard out injured. Kyle Emmanuel was next up with 40.

Adrian Phillips continues to have an intriguing sub-role playing 42 snaps. He’s still predominantly lining up in the box.

Los Angeles Rams

Robert Quinn was inactive for this game. It was the first game he’s missed all season and he was averaging 40 snaps per game until now. In his absence rookie Ejuan Price made his debut and played 21 snaps. I loved Price’s tape but he seemed (and still seems) too small to play on the edge in the NFL.

At corner Kayvon Webster continues to start across from Trumaine Johnson. Webster led the team with 70 snaps this week.

Miami Dolphins

Andre Branch returned at DE with 36 snaps. Charles Harris commensurately lost volume on the week and played just 28.

At safety Reshad Jones led the way with 63 snaps. Michael Thomas played 45. But TJ McDonald should return this week which is a big red flag for me.

Minnesota Vikings

Everson Griffen was a late scratch. In his absence Brian Robison (65) and Dnaielle Hunter (70) both played more than usual but it was also a high-volume week.

Andrew Sendejo impressed at safety with a big game but played just 55 snaps compared to Harrison Smith’s 75.

New England Patriots

Kyle Van Noy as expected played the majority of the game on the edge in Dont’a Hightower’s role. Elandon Roberts (38) and David Harris (30) shared van Noy’s role in the middle. Neither are startable until they win the job outright which may not happen.

DE Cassius Marsh missed this game and the Patriots played really well. After calling for him to be benched all year I am not surprised.

New Orleans Saints

LB AJ Klein got hurt early in this one and missed most of the game. He only played nine snaps. Craig Robertson managed 35 and Manti Te’o played 40. Please don’t chase after Te’o. He’s not the answer.

Kenny Vaccaro couldn’t overcome his injury and missed this game. Rafael Bush played 21 snaps in his absence with Marcus Williams (36) and Vonn Bell (37) playing the most,

New York Jets

There were no major changes for the Jets this week. It’s pretty shocking how steady they’ve been really. Darron Lee and Demario Davis have played almost every snap at LB and are first and third in LB snaps, Leonard Williams leads the league in snaps for DEs, Buster Skrine is third amongst CBs and Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are first and second for safeties. Yes – the Jets haven’t had their bye week yet but that’s still amazingly consistent to have six key players out there the whole time for ten games.

New York Giants

Janoris Jenkins returned at corner this week to 61 snaps. Ross Cockrell lost out to make way for him.

At DE Olivier Vernon also returned. He managed 54 snaps which was the same as Jason Pierre-Paul.

At the silliest position group in the league Jonathan Casillas led the team this week with 58 snaps. He’d missed the previous three games. Curtis Grant (who led the team last week) played just 7 snaps.

Oakland Raiders

Bye week.

Philadelphia Eagles

Bye week.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Stephon Tuitt returned at DE this week. Hopefully he’ll stay fit this time and we won’t have to watch any more Tyson Alualu.

At corner Joe Haden took a bump and played just 10 snaps. Coty Sensebaugh stepped in to 48 snaps in his stead.

Seattle Seahawks

With Earl Thomas missing out again Bradley McDougald again started and played 80 snaps. Rookie Delano Hill also played ten snaps for his biggest game so far.

DE is a bit of a mess. Michael Bennett (68) continues to stay on the field with Dwight Freeney (41) next as Frank Clark (30) got hurt. Branden Jackson (25) and Dion Jordan (33) also played a role.

San Francisco 49ers

Adrian Colbert (66) played safety next to Eric Reid (66) but broke a bone in his hand and will miss time. This whole position group has been a bombshell in 2017.

At LB Brock Coyle (60) continues to play a lot opposite Reuben Foster (66). Coyle is a good flier if you’ve had injuries.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Justin Evans continues to be the only full-time safety in Tampa. He managed 69 snaps this week ahead of Chris Conte (38) and TJ Ward (31).

Brent Grimes returned at CB to play 69 snaps across from Ryan Smith (68). Vernon Hargreaves played just 28 snaps in the slot before he got hurt and Javien Elliott stepped in (20). I’m still seeing loads of people with Hargreaves on their roster. Trade him for whatever you can. He’s not going to get good again.

Tennessee Titans

There was a big drop in team volume this week for the Titans so many players suffered. Although numbers dropped across the board players’ ratios stayed pretty steady with no major changes. Keep faith in your Titans. They’ll be back next week.

Washington Redskins

In week nine DeAngelo Hall played 81 snaps. This week he managed just 21 with DeShazor Everett playing 38. DJ Swearinger (61) is still the only safety in Washington you should trust.

At LB Will Compton (32) got hurt and will miss the season. Martrell Spaight (29) should get playing time going forwards as the last man standing.

Bashaud Breeland to a full-time job at corner and managed 60 snaps. Quinton Dunbar missed out entirely.

I hope you have another great week and your IDP teams are dominating your leagues. Good luck everyone!
