IDP Snap Counts: Week Nine

Tom Kislingbury

Hi everyone.

Arizona Cardinals

There were no major changes for the Cards, but it was a very high-volume week. A total of seven players managed to play over 65 snaps each. They were: Deone Bucannon, Tyvon Branch, Tyrann Mathieu, Chandler Jones, Patrick Peterson, Tramon Williams and Karlos Dansby. The Cards like to put faith in their starters and leave them out there at most positions (although the defensive line is a hotchpotch) and clearly you can take advantage of that.

Budda Baker has been used sparingly (just 40 snaps in eight games) but now’s a good time to stash him for next season if you can.

Atlanta Falcons

There were no major changes this week. Vic Beasley managed to play 43 snaps which is a season-high for him. His average was 30 before this game. Hopefully you sold any shares of him in the summer. It was always nigh-on impossible for him to repeat his absurdly efficient 2016 season.

Baltimore Ravens

At outside LB, we saw some shifts this week. Terrell Suggs played just 38 snaps which was his lowest total of the season. At his age this was always going to happen at some point. Matt Judon (47) was the top volume man again.

Buffalo Bills

Ramon Humber is fit again and came instantly back into the team with 50 snaps. Correspondingly Matt Milano saw the field for just 10. I still like Milano and think he’s worth a stash but he’s not a high priority.

At safety Jordan Poyer also returned and played 67 snaps. Trae Easton was dropped to make way.

Carolina Panthers

For the second week in a row Shaq Thompson saw limited game time (39 snaps) whilst Thomas Davis played the whole game (60). It seemed earlier in the season that this had flipped but they sure like to keep us guessing.

At corner Daryl Worley had a dip and played just 19 snaps after he took a knock. Kevon Seymour stepped up with 44. He’s one to watch for cornerback streamers.

Chicago Bears

Bye week.

Cincinnati Bengals

Michael Johnson has been in and out of the team with injuries but played a decent amount this week with 56 snaps. Elsewhere on the line Andrew Billings played 48 snaps. Before this game he’d not seen 15 in a single game in 2017. It looks like a fleeting oddity but keep an eye on it. Someone has to miss out and Carl Lawson played just 17 snaps this week. He had 41 the week before. Lawson has flashed but this is Cincinnati. The staff don’t like to work rookies heavily if they can avoid it.

At safety Shawn Williams took a knock and played sparingly (32 snaps). Clayton Fejdelem saw 16 in relief.

Cleveland Browns

Bye week.

Dallas Cowboys

The DE situation is (as expected) a full-blown rotation. DeMarcus Lawrence has stood out but assuming he can’t maintain his ridiculous pace this is a good situation to sell. Lawrence is going for top five DE prices but 29 other DEs have played more snaps than him.

At safety Xavier Woods managed 24 snaps. He played 37 last week. I think he’s closing in on Jeff Heath who has a severe case of being ineffective. Woods played some slot early on in the season but has been a traditional safety recently.

Denver Broncos

Derek Wolfe played 54 snaps this week. He’s outpacing the rest of the linemen by 109 snaps. Aussie Adam Gotsis is the next man on the list and played just 36 this week.

With Todd Davis missing out Zaire Anderson has now played 57 snaps in the last two games. He’s an option only in very deep leagues.

On the edge Shane Ray has now seen over 50 snaps in each of the two games since his return. As a contrast Shaq Barrett has played 24 and 30 snaps in those games.

Detroit Lions

Hello Teez Tabor! The rookie saw the field for just the second time and played 11 snaps. I liked him a lot in the draft so I’m watching carefully.

Speaking of rookie LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin played nine snaps this week. He’s being given some time every week which is encouraging but he’s nowhere near startable yet.

Jacquies Smith walked into 29 snaps at DE but as I’ve shown previously the Lions DE rotation is a mess. Don’t be tempted by Smith.

Green Bay Packers

Rookie lineman Montravius Adams saw 18 snaps this week on the interior. He’s only played four snaps previously way back in week three.

Josh Jones saw 68 snaps. That’s the highest of his career. Correspondingly Jake Ryan played just 18.

Safety Morgan Burnett returned after injury to 43 snaps which is fairly encouraging. Kentrell Brice missed out entirely though. He’d averaged 48 snaps per game previously.

Houston Texans

A few minor changes this week for the Texans. Angelo Blackson came into 16 snaps at DE. Christin Covington missed out correspondingly. Ufomba Kamalu wasn’t in the game at OLB but Lamarr Houston (45) played more than last week. Corey Moore at safety returned and saw 15 snaps.

Speaking of safety the Texans are really annoying. They like to have two clear starters but also give 10-30 snaps to another couple of players. In six of their eight games in 2017 four players have played double-digit snaps at safety. It’s not new under Mike Vrabel either – it’s been the case for the last few years when Romeo Crennel was the man in charge. The two of them obviously share many defensive philosophies.

Indianapolis Colts

Vontae Davis didn’t play at corner*. In his absence Rashaan Melvin returned to the team and played all 71 snaps.

Henry Anderson continues to build momentum at DE and played 55 snaps this week*.

At safety Darius Butler played full-time free safety with 63 snaps. Mathias Fairley played 71 and had a good day. I really hope none of you had a knee jerk reaction and dropped him after last week.

*Editor’s note: Both Vontae Davis and Henry Anderson were placed on season-ending IR this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars

It was a very low volume day for all Jaguars. As a team they played 428 defensive snaps this week. Washington had 913. Only one other team (The Ravens) had under 600. So most Jags players had a bad day but don’t despair – they should be back to normal next week.

For what it’s worth Marcell Dareus played just 12 snaps at DT on his debut. Abry Jones played 20 and Malik Jackson 30.

Kansas City Chiefs

With Philip Gaines out many people (including myself) have pegged Kenneth Acker as a good streaming option at CB. Although he put up good numbers, Acker played just 47 snaps this week compared to 64 for Steven Nelson and 65 for Marcus Peters. That’s slightly concerning.

More concerning still was LB Derrick Johnson seeming hurt and being restricted to 53 snaps (against a season average of 66). Kevin Pierre-Louis played 39 snaps in relief.

Los Angeles Chargers

Bye week.

Los Angeles Rams

Bye week.

Miami Dolphins

Andre Branch was fit again this week and managed 36 snaps. As we’ve pointed out before this is a straight left/right job share with two men sharing each job.

With Nate Allen out for the season Michael Thomas played 45 snaps at safety. I have no interest in him.

Minnesota Vikings

Bye week.

New England Patriots

Bye week.

New Orleans Saints

Kenny Vaccaro took a knock in this game and only played 28 snaps. Chris Banjo came in for 9 snaps in relief.

New York Jets

Buster Skrine returned from injury at corner and played 75 snaps. Morris Claiborne did not see the field.

David Bass returned at OLB but played just 22 snaps. Jordan Jenkins saw 42 and is the only OLB worth owning on the team.

Superstar pass-batter Kony Ealy played just 12 snaps fewer than Muhammad Wilkerson (41 to 53). That’s the closest the gap has been all season.

New York Giants

Another week another Giants corner being disciplined. It’s almost as if the Giants players don’t respect Ben McAdoo and his ridiculous hair/moustache/tantrums. This week Janoris Jenkins missed out. In his stead Ross Cockrell played 56 snaps.

DE has been in a state of flux all season too. Kerry Wynn missed this game and Avery Moss played opposite Jason Pierre-Paul. Moss played 56 snaps and JPP 54.

Linebacker remains a massacre. I’m not going to go through all the numbers. Suffice to say Curtis Grant was the man to own. He’d played a total of 35 snaps before this week. You can’t rely on any of them.

Oakland Raiders

Rookie Obi Melifonwu made his long-awaited debut. He played just 7 snaps at safety, linebacker and corner. We’re still none the wiser exactly how he’ll be used but I’m betting it isn’t a full-time role.

Reggie Nelson returned from injury at safety too and played all 67 snaps. Shalom Luani was given two token snaps. He’ll always have week eight.

The LB situation does appear to have solidified though. NaVorro Bowman (67) played almost the whole game as did Cory James (58).

Philadelphia Eagles

No major changes here. One of the reasons the Eagles have one of the better defenses in the league is how consistent they’ve been. That and the utterly ferocious D line of course. Fletcher Cox played 39 incandescent snaps here and I though Brandon Graham (40) was excellent too.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Bye week.

Seattle Seahawks

Sheldon Richardson missed this game at DT. Naz Jones (31) and Garrison Smith (9) received minor boosts in his absence.

Frank Clark played a season-high 58 snaps at end which is encouraging. For him at least. Given his behaviour the rest of the world is not encouraged by his success at all.

Earl Thomas was out at free safety which opened up a full-time job for Bradley McDougald. He played 63 snaps compared to his season average of seven prior to this game.

San Francisco 49ers

Eric Reid alert! Jaquiski Tartt has gone to IR which opens up the path for Reid to return to strong safety. Both of his rivals for starting snaps in Jimmie Ward and Tartt have now broken their arms. Someone once threatened to break my arm at school. In double chemistry. I still have flashbacks.

Reuben Foster played 75 snaps at LB and had the sort of game we all hoped for from him coming out. He took a knock but I’m hoping he’s fine. He is such a tantalising player. Brock Coyle remains in the lineup and played 64 snaps this week. Baffling.

On the D line Leger Douzable is having a purple patch. He’s played 113 snaps in the last two games and lit the stat sheet up. He’s a great fill-in with Solomon Thomas and Arik Armstead both out.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Brent Grimes continues to miss out at cornerback. Robert McClain returned though and managed 60 snaps. Vernon Hargreaves only saw 27. As I pointed out three weeks ago his value has taken a big hit with his move to the slot. He played outside in week eight to cover the absence of Grimes and McClain but was in the slot again this week.

At safety there’s a three-way battle going on. Justin Evans continues to play full-time (50 snaps after missing a few snaps with a knock) predominantly deep, with TJ Ward (39 snaps) and Chris Conte (31) both getting time across.

Tennessee Titans

There were no real changes for the Titans after their bye week. Wes Woodyard continues to dominate at LB (75 snaps) with Avery Williamson (42) and Jayon Brown (33) splitting a job.

Washington Redskins

Montae Nicholson missed out this week at safety. D.J. Swearinger (83 snaps) continues to be the only option you want.

After a week of sharing the job Will Compton (82) beat out Martrell Spaight (2) for the second LB opposite job across from Zach brown (82).

Junior Galette played the most he has all season with 31 snaps. This was just a result of the exceptionally high snap-counts all round though. Preston Smith (62) and Ryan Kerrigan (56) are clearly in front of him.

I hope you have another great week and your IDP teams are dominating your leagues. Good luck everyone!
