IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Tom Kislingbury

Hi everyone. Let’s get straight to it.

*Note: The Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks were all on a bye week.

Arizona Cardinals

Haason Reddick played 36 snaps at outside linebacker this week. In the two weeks since he moved outside he’s totalled 67 snaps compared to Chandler Jones playing 135 over the same period. On the other hand Deone Bucannon played 70 snaps and is back to full-time duty.

At corner Justin Bethel has been a full-time player for the whole season but the team have made noises about benching him. Be aware.

Atlanta Falcons

The only real change over the bye week was players getting healthy. At safety Ricardo Allen managed 67 snaps and Damontae Kazee was relegated back to the bench. Kazee didn’t play a single snap.

On the edge Vic Beasley returned to play 26 snaps and was largely ineffective.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens played deep into overtime, which makes snap counts look a bit odd. Don’t assume the big numbers from that game will be the new norm. For example Matt Judon played 70 snaps at OLB which caused his huge game. 70 snaps is not realistic at that position and very probably won’t happen again for him this season.

Even in a big week Kamalei Correa only played 7 snaps with Patrick Onwuasor on the field for 66. Hopefully you nabbed PO two weeks ago when he started to dominate this race.

Carolina Panthers

Kule Kuechly of course suffered a head injury. He seems OK now but it’s a worry going forwards. Kuechly played 30 snaps on the day with Shaq Thompson on 53 and Thomas Davis on 55. David Mayo interestingly stepped up with 32. He’d only played 11 snaps this season before this game.

Julius Peppers racked up another sack and continues to make me look stupid. I’ve been saying he can’t keep producing on such limited volume (he’s averaged 30 snaps a game over the season) but just maybe he can.

Chicago Bears

Danny Trevathan returned from suspension and walked back into 72 snaps. Christian Jones was the number two inside linebacker with just 56 snaps.

On the edge Leonard Floyd (72) continues to stay on the field with Pernell McPhee (37) and Sam Acho (36) sharing time.

Cleveland Browns

Myles Garrett stepped up in his second game with 33 snaps and another sack. The Browns had four ends play at least that many though and as is Gregg Williams preference this could be a nasty rotation. Hopefully Garrett can force his way to more time.

Jamie Collins returned from his concussion to play 54 snaps which was behind Christian Kirksey and Joe Schobert who both saw 66 snaps. Collins is used in the slot and on the edge as opposed to just a traditional LB role which worries me for his production going forwards. He will have more big-play days.

Denver Broncos

Tod Davis played 45 snaps this week compared to his season average of 27. That was a direct response to the Giants using far more heavy sets with their receiver issues. To illustrate the point third Broncos corner Bradley Roby only played 23 snaps compared to his average of 44 previously.

Will Parks is being side-lined a bit too (although the game script clearly didn’t help) and played only 10 snaps. It’s clear that Justin Simmons won that particular fight and has played 131 more defensive snaps across the season.

Detroit Lions

In the crazy game against the Saints we saw some strange numbers here too. Akeem Spence and A’Shawn Robinson both played over 50 snaps which was something neither had done this season before. Robinson had a huge day with a pick-six of course but that’s not going to happen again!

At linebacker Jarrad Davis played 71 snaps and Tahir Whitehead 67. Even Jalen Reeves-Maybin got some action with 27 snaps.

Tavon Wilson played 65 snaps at safety. He’s clearly out in front of Miles Killebrew and an excellent player with alarmingly low ownership.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers season is hanging in the balance after their nasty injury shocker. But enough about Morgan Burnett… The Packers put up some big numbers here as the Vikings were ahead for most of the game and grinding the clock.

Jake Ryan continues to play significant time at inside linebacker. He’s averaged 42 snaps over the last three weeks now. Josh Jones has averaged 40 over the same period.

The safeties getting significant time are Haha Clinton Dix (77 snaps this week) and Kentrell Brice (75).

Houston Texans

As we knew Brennan Scarlett has been pushed into a starting role and played 50 snaps last week at outside linebacker. Ufomba Kamalu also saw significant time. They’re both worth adding in very deep, big-play leagues.

As has become typical in Houston four separate safeties played over 20 snaps. Dre Hal (59), Marcus Gilchrist (56), Eddie Pleasant (29) and Kurtis Drummond (21). Pleasant has a history of playing nickel linebacker and is worth a speculative add.

Indianapolis Colts

No big changes here bar Nate Hairston coming back to play 23 snaps at corner. Rashaan Melvin (59) is still the one to own with Vontae Davis (69) as the best player in real life.

Jon Bostic (70 snaps) and Antonio Morrison (59) continue to dominate inside with neither being very good.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Very little has changed on this defense recently. Stability being one of the factors that makes them one of the better defenses in the league in 2017.

Dante Fowler (averaging 29 snaps on the season) continues to lag significantly after Yannick Ngakoue (52) and Calais Campbell (59).

Kansas City Chiefs

Dee Ford returned to fitness this week and managed 34 snaps in his first game back. Frank Zombo (30) was obviously restricted to make room. Justin Houston played 64 on the other side but was uncharacteristically bad.

Reggie Ragland was on the field for his biggest day as a Chief with 27 snaps. That was more to do with the Steelers running a load of heavy sets as they were clearly committed to running the ball. And to be fair they did a great job of it.

Los Angeles Chargers

Jatavis Brown was restricted by injury to just 20 snaps. Hayes Pullard was top dog in his absence with 54 snaps and Korey Toomer managed 34.

Los Angeles Rams

No significant changes here. With Maurice Alexander cut John Johnson (69) and Cody Davis (49) are full-time starters at safety.

Miami Dolphins

There were no big changes for the Dolphins this week. The DE rotation changed a little bit but nothing really significant.

The only change that was actually significant was Jordan Phillips returning at DT and hitting 21 snaps. Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor both lost about 10 snaps to make room.

Minnesota Vikings

The big change here was at linebacker. Ben Gedeon didn’t suit up on the day which made room for Emmanuel Lamur who played 38 snaps. It’s also noteworthy that Lamur seemed to be playing ahead of Anthony Barr on some sub packages. I don’t think that’s the new world order here but it’s definitely a situation to watch.

Andrew Sendejo also missed out at safety. Anthony Harris stepped in as the full time starter. That should be a short-term solution.

New England Patriots

With Stephon Gilmore hurt, there was a space at corner which was filled by Johnson Bademosi. Jonathan Jones stayed at his usual level of around 20 snaps. It seems the Pats think he’s a pure slot corner.

Deatrich Wise Jr. had a big day too in terms of volume. He played a career high of 59. He’d never hit 35 in a game before. Here’s hoping Cassius Marsh is on the downslope. He’s terrible.

New Orleans Saints

Craig Robertson had a big day and played 62 snaps. Obviously it was a high-volume week as a massive shootout but this is still significant. Even more so is AJ Klein playing 81 snaps but managing only 3 assists. It’s hugely impressive to be so far away from the action that many times. Klein is 33rd among LBs with 333 snaps but just 64th in solo tackles with 15. Sean Lee has 24 solos and he hasn’t played for the last three weeks.

New York Jets

Kony Ealy played just 36 snaps this week with Leonard Williams (55) and Muhammad Wilkerson (53) way ahead. Ealy is batting down passes at an astonishing rate this year. It’s still very odd to me that the Patriots cut him. For Cassius Marsh of all people!

At linebacker Demario Davis has currently played more snaps than any other linebacker in the NFL with 419. Darron Lee is in tenth spot with 389.

New York Giants

With Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie missing due to suspension/tantrum, Ross Cockrell played as the third linebacker. He managed 34 snaps behind Eli Apple and Janoris Jenkins who both saw 78 snaps.

Jason Pierre-Paul had a huge week fuelled by playing 68 snaps. JPP leads all DEs with 398 snaps. Aside from Trey Flowers (395) no other end has more than 343. That’s a full game’s worth of extra snaps over the competition and it’s still mid-October. Opposite JPP, Kerry Wynn (53) and Avery Moss (42) both saw significant playing time.

Oakland Raiders

Linebacker was as car crash this week. Cory James played just 7 snaps. It seems he was hurt but it’s been very quiet on that front in terms of information. Marquel Lee missed the game as well which left Nicholas Morrow (62) and Xavier Woodson-Lustrer (40) stepped in. No wonder they signed broken down NaVorro Bowman.

There was a big change at corner this week with David Amerson returning to fitness. He managed all 64 snaps whilst Sean Smith missed out entirely.

Eddie Vanderdoes took a knock at DT which meant he only saw 21 snaps, down from his season average of 35.

Philadelphia Eagles

This was a high-volume game with the defense on the field for over 80 snaps. As a result a lot of players were a bit inflated. Brandon Graham played 62 snaps for example (he averaged 43 per week before this) and as much as I love him that’s not sustainable.

Fletcher Cox returned from injury and saw a huge 65 snaps against the Panthers’ RB-heavy formations. Timmy Jernigan saw just 25 snaps as a result.

Nigel Bradham was the top dog at linebacker with a stunning 78 snaps. Mychal Kendricks played 55 and Jordan Hicks an injury-hit 34.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Vince Williams made a couple of headline plays when he dominated Kareem Hunt but surprisingly only played 26 snaps. Given the gamescript this makes sense as the Chiefs were chasing the game. Six separate Steelers defensive backs played over 20 snaps correspondingly although interestingly not JJ Wilcox who played a single snap. He only saw six last week and appears to be purely a backup.

San Francisco 49ers

Eric Reid made his long-awaited return but saw just ten snaps. I still like Reid but Jaquiski Tartt (73 snaps this week) has played well enough to not be discarded.

With NaVorro Bowman out, Brock Coyle saw the start at inside linebacker. He played 74 snaps with Ray-Ray Armstrong on 61. Reuben Foster should be fit this week or next which will make Coyle pretty useless.

On the line Arik Armstead got hurt and only played 22 snaps. He’s since been placed on IR. Elvis Dumervil and Aaron Lynch will pick up the vacated snaps.

At corner Ahkello Witherspoon saw significant snaps (34) for the first time. He’ll battle K’Waun Williams for more time going forwards.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

This team is really bad. It’s such a shame because Pirates are cool.

Vernon Hargreaves continues to play every snap (63) at corner but is awful.

DE Noah Spence played just 32 snaps. You know my views on him by now. Robert Ayers (47) and William Gholston (43) were the top duo.

At linebacker Lavonte David returned to fitness and saw 61 snaps. Kendell Beckwith played 65 and Adarius Glanton fell back to just 21 snaps. Kwon Alexander should be fit again this week or next which will confine Beckwith to minimal snaps again.

At safety there is some hope. Justin Evans has led the team over the last two weeks. He played 57 snaps this week (albeit mostly deep) with Chris Conte (37) and TJ Ward (36) rotating in and out.

Tennessee Titans

Derrick Morgan played just 28 snaps which was worrying against his season average of 54. Since the game, it’s appeared he’s battling an injury. Definitely one to watch.

The inside linebacker situation has settled down a bit with Wesley Woodyard the only full-time starter and Jayon Brown taking snaps from Avery Williamson.

Washington Redskins

Montae Nicholson played 63 snaps at safety and appears to have won the battle opposite DJ Swearinger. I’m still avoiding both of them if I can.

At linebacker Mason Foster stepped up to 72 snaps with Martrell Speight out. Zach Brown remains the player to own of course.

Bashaud Breeland played just 39 snaps and appears to be hurt. Fabian Moreau filled in when he was hurt.

I’ve talked about defensive linemen here before. No Washington lineman has played more than 170 snaps so far (Matt Ionnidis). 104 different players have more volume than that. Don’t roster any of them.

That’s it from me. I hope you have another great week and your IDP teams are dominating your leagues. I’d love to hear about how you’re getting on.

Good luck everyone!
