NFL Draft Aftermath: IDP Winners and Losers from the AFC South

Adam Tzikas

The NFL draft has been and gone, but we’re beginning to get a better idea of how the incoming rookies will affect the veterans in your dynasty leagues. Here, we cover the IDP winners and losers from the AFC South.

Indianapolis Colts

Winner: Sean Spence, LB

The 27-year-old walks on to the team as the main inside linebacker. He did only sign a one year deal, but they have little talent at the position. He should see a very high number of snaps, and the production that comes with snap volume. The Colts did also add Anthony Walker in the fourth round to add to the competition for the other inside spot.

Losers: Defensive Line

While Johnathan Hankins was added in free agency, he needs to continue with the flashes he’s seen in the past, and do it all alone. Jabaal Sheard was another addition but does almost nothing to improve this defensive line that looks absolutely terrible on paper. I do really like Henry Anderson, but he’s done nothing to show that he can stay on the field. The stars would need to align for this to be an above average bunch.

Houston Texans

Winner: Jadeveon Clowney, DE/OLB

The Texans did not add anything at the defensive end or outside linebacker position, showing they have the utmost confidence in Clowney moving forward. Finally (hopefully) healthy and finally (hopefully) working with a healthy J.J. Watt, the former first overall pick should see massive production. Currently positioned as an outside backer on MFL, but an end elsewhere, he could be swapping before we know it.

Losers: Secondary

After losing A.J. Bouye in free agency, the Texans almost add nothing in the draft to address their complete lack of a secondary. I do like Kevin Johnson as a corner, but the questions start rolling in for the literal cast of characters at the other corner and safety positions. This includes a fifth and seventh rounder, then a massive group of undrafted free agents. Maybe I’m just an equally bitter Eagles fan, but Texan fans better hope their defensive line gets to quarterbacks before the damage is done.

Tennessee Titans

Winner: Adoree’ Jackson, CB

A huge need for the Titans, Jackson was a slam dunk pick in the first round, He’s is a very talented corner that can play all over the field. He also will contribute in the return game and could see a few snaps on offense. If your league gives points for returns he could be a total steal in your rookie draft. He should see the field early and often and will have staying power.

Losers: None

This was a quiet IDP draft for the Titans, they focused on offense. They have a strong unit going forward when you look into it. It might be lite on paper, but if things go right, they could have a top unit.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Winner: Barry Church, S

Church was an extremely vital part of the Cowboys defense before moving on to join the Jags. He walks on as the starting strong safety and had zero additions in the draft to worry him at all. He should be locked in to all the snaps here and when healthy, has the talent to be a major contributor.

Loser: Dante Fowler, DE

The former first rounder already felt the pressure with free agency addition Calais Campbell and “playing much, much better than ever expected” Yannick Ngakoue breathing down his neck. Now add the addition of Dawaune Smoot at the top of the third round and Fowler seems to be losing the confidence of his coaches. Smoot profiles as more of a situational pass rusher in the short term, but can develop into a starter.
