Weekly Twitter Observations

Kevin OBrien

In this series of Twitter Observations, we will focus on some of the interesting tweets you may have missed. Twitter can be overwhelming with the amount of information that streams live, but it also proves to be one of the fastest and easiest ways to communicate. In 140 characters or less you can learn something about a player you may have never thought of from trends, stats or analysis. Let’s review some of the best tweets I’ve captured this week.

News

Josh Weinfuss, ESPN NFL Nation

This story was eye-opening for me. John Brown playing last year with a cyst on his spine is incredible. The impact it had on Brown should not be minimized, in the article it says that he couldn’t eat or lift weights. If Brown can recover and resume playing at his 2014-2015 of 100+ targets, he just might be what the Cardinals need most as Larry Fitzgerald nears retirement.

In DLF May mocks, his ADP was 97 overall, compared to May 2016’s ADP of 54 overall. That is a steep discount for a receiver who may return to his form prior to having a cyst on his spine.

Stats

John Paulsen, 4for4

Mike Wallace is definitely a player I have dismissed too easily in the past. Just looking at last season, Wallace finished as the WR22 in PPR with 116 targets, 72 receptions for 1,017 yards with four touchdowns. The problem with Wallace is that he isn’t the most exciting player, scoring below ten PPR points in about half of his games, making him a frustrating start.

However, in dynasty drafts he can be had in the 13th round and provide a few game-winning weeks. So without getting too excited about Wallace’s target volume and potential top 24 seasons, there’s also his favorable cost. Wallace can be had rounds later than a very similar wide receiver in Pierre Garcon, who is going in the 11th round of dynasty startups.

Mike Beers, RotoViz

Mike Beers has produced these charts for years and they never disappoint. This gives a great visual of how Devonta Freeman fared compared to Jordan Howard last season. Howard had an impressive floor with 40% of his games producing between 10 to 15 points in PPR. However, Freeman scored above 20 points in PPR in 35% of his games, versus Howard’s 27%.  Be sure to check out all of Mike’s charts using the hashtag #chartsonchartsoncharts

Ryan McDowell, DLF

I really enjoy these comparisons after a major inflection point, here being the NFL Draft. Sometimes it’s due to rookie themselves landing in optimal landing spots; however other veteran wide receivers benefit from their team simply not drafting a wide receiver, such as the Ravens. Breshad Perriman and Wallace saw bumps in value as it was expected they would draft a top wide receiver.

Fantasy News

Scott Fish and Curtis Patrick, DLF

Scott Fish does so much to give back, and this year you can help support with this T-shirt drive organized by Curtis Patrick.

Giana Pacinelli, Two QB and Huffington Post

I wanted to share this article by Giana Pacinelli on Yahoo Fantasy’s Liz Loza. The headline is ‘Women in Fantasy Sports: Liz Loza’ and as a father of three girls, I love elevating and putting a spotlight on girls who made a special connection to sports as a child and grow up holding that connection into their adulthood.

If that wasn’t enough, I loved the story behind how Loza’s love for sports had a specific connection to her grandfather. We focus on fantasy football as a hobby; however, for so many of us, we have made connections through sports where otherwise they would not have been made. Check out the article, which is really well written by Giana.

With so much information on Twitter, there are so many great minds contributing great discussion, articles, and bits of data, truly a hot bed of fantasy goodness. I will be doing my best to capture the highlights of the week and mining it out in one place for you.
