Fire Extinguisher: Redskins sign Terrelle Pryor

Ken Kelly

The Washington Redskins have been referred to by multiple outlets as a “dumpster fire” over the past few days after firing their General Manager (and being accused of dishonesty in regards to why), losing their top two receivers to free agency and having their newly designated franchise quarterback request a trade.  They started rebounding today by signing former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Terrelle Pryor to a very reasonable one-year, $8 million contract. The addition of Pryor starts the rebuilding process for an offense that was downright unstoppable at times last year.  Let’s analyze the fallout in regards to the players impacted by this signing.

Terrelle Pryor, WR WAS

By most accounts, Pryor wanted to stay in Cleveland.  However, the Browns signing of Kenny Britt forced his hand and he ended up settling for this one-year “prove it” contract with the Redskins, much like Alshon Jeffery did with the Eagles.  In his first full-time year as a receiver, Pryor posted 77 catches for 1,007 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Considering the inept quarterback play in Cleveland, those stats were more than respectable.  In turn, his ADP in dynasty leagues steadily rose throughout the year, as indicated by our new ADP player comparison tool below:

Pryor should form a nice duo with Josh Doctson to help replace the losses of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.  With Kirk Cousins seemingly staying on board for at least one more season and playing on his own one-year deal as he searches for an elusive multi-year contract, Pryor will have a chance at a breakout season in a pass happy offense where he’s one of the primary options. Expect his ADP to rise a little more with today’s news.  He’s now in another contract season and will have millions of reasons to work hard and perform on the field.  Pryor is betting on himself and should have a great opportunity to improve on his numbers this season – just keep in mind he turns 28 in June.

Kirk Cousins, QB WAS

This is some welcome good news for Cousins as his offense was being stripped by the hour this week.  He should have plenty to work with all over the field with Doctson, Pryor, Jamison Crowder and Jordan Reed.  The Redskins likely need to add one or two more pieces (Cordarrelle Patterson was visiting today) and continue to bolster their running game but this was a solid addition for Washington and Cousins.

Josh Doctson, WR WAS

The losses of Garcon and Jackson clearly open the door for a second year leap from Doctson.  He’ll need to quickly get healthy but he has the talent to be a difference maker.  Having Pryor across the way should help keep defenses honest. This is a huge season for Doctson’s dynasty value.

Jordan Reed, TE WAS

Reed is a tremendous talent and will be the first option in the passing offense. The worry with him has everything to do with his health and nothing to do with any additions or subtractions to the offense.  He just needs to stay healthy and avoid another concussion.

Redskins Receivers

If there are losers in this deal, it’s likely the depth players for Washington.  Ryan Grant is a different kind of player, so his role won’t change too much. However, players like Vernon Davis and Niles Paul will undoubtedly lose targets to the big-bodied Pryor.
