Dynasty Scouts Conference Review: Pac-12 and Around the Nation
Here at Dynasty Scouts, we’ll always do our best to keep you informed about the latest happenings in college football. We watch all of the games so you don’t have to. Here’s some of what we noticed this past weekend.
PAC-12
Premier Conference Performer
Davis Webb, QB, California (Senior) vs. Texas
23/40 passes, 396 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions, one rushing touchdown.
Davis Webb is playing some special football this season. Who knows, maybe by the time he is in the NFL, he will be starting for a team while Jared Goff is still waiting in the wings. Taking on the #11 Texas Longhorns was a significant test that Webb passed with flying colors.
He had to be perfect on every level and he nearly was. He didn’t throw an interception and was on target on 58 percent of his passes. He also tossed four touchdowns and rushed for one. California Golden Bears have now won-lost-won in their last three games, losing only to San Diego State.
Webb has thrown for 1359 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season with only three interceptions, adding two touchdowns on the ground.
The Cal Bears will now start division play as they face Arizona State on the road then #24 Utah at home.

Rising Players
Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA (Sophomore) vs. BYU
26/40 passes, 307 yards, two touchdowns, one interception
Josh Rosen connected on 65 percent of his passes, totalling 307 yards and two touchdowns. He led UCLA to their second straight victory since losing to Texas A&M by a touchdown.
Last week against BYU it was a combination of defense and poise by Rosen that helped the team come away with the victory on the road, 17-14. Rosen connected on his first touchdown with Cameron Griffin for six yards, and then his second came in the third quarter when he hit Darren Andrews for 33 yards. The score extended the lead to 17-7.
Rosen has struggled to start this sophomore season, but looks to turn it around. His game against Texas A&M was brutal as he only threw one touchdown in a combination of three interceptions, Overall, he has thrown just four touchdowns to go along with four interceptions and 917 yards.
Rosen will try to keep the momentum going when UCLA (2-1) face Stanford this week at home and then they get Arizona as well at home in week five.
Christian McCaffrey RB, Stanford (Junior) vs. USC
21 carries, 207 yards, two touchdowns; four catches, 73 yards, one touchdown.
Christian McCaffrey had week two off, so he arrived on game day rested which means bad news for the USC Trojans defense. It turned out that way as well. McCaffrey obliterated the Trojans with 207 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 21 carries. He also caught four passes for 73 yards and one touchdown. Coming just 27 yards shy of 300 total combined.
He scored his first touchdown when Ryan Burns hit McCaffrey on the wheel route and USC completely lost track of him, as he did the rest going 56 yards. His second was a one yard leap. In just two games, McCaffrey has 52 carries for 291 yards and three touchdowns. He also has 11 receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.
This week Stanford (2-0) will face UCLA on the road and then face #9 Washington in Seattle.
Chad Hansen WR, California (Junior) vs. Texas
12 catches, 196 yards, two touchdowns.
Chad Hansen helped guide the victory against Texas. Davis Webb looked for him constantly as he reeled in 12 catches for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Both his touchdowns led to the victory 17-14 in a must needed win.
Webb was on the receiving end of a 12-yard touchdown pass from Davis Webb that provided the winning points after the game had been tied 43-43 and also scored on a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. He is now on a three-game streak of ten or more receptions and leads the nation in total receptions (40). Hansen also leads the nation in receptions per game (13.3 rpg), receiving yards (546) and receiving yards per game (182.0 ypg) and tied for first with five TD catches.
The Cal Bears are going to need now to avoid a down week against Arizona on the road then at home against #24 Utah.
Falling Players
Darell Garretson, QB, Oregon State (Junior) vs. Idaho State
15/30 for 172 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception; eight carries, 46 yards, one touchdown.
Darell Garretson struggled against Idaho State even though they pulled out their first victory of the season. Garretson was only good on 50 percent of his passes and didn’t throw for a touchdown, but did manage an interception. He did more on his legs as he scored once and totaled 46 yards.
The defense is what made this game lopsided as they forced several turnovers and put pressure on the Idaho State offense all game. On the season Garretson has 400 yards and three touchdowns.
Oregon State (1-1) will now face Boise State and then on the road to Colorado.
Nate Starks, RB, UCLA (Junior) vs. BYU
15 carries, 39 yards, zero touchdowns; three catches, 16 yards.
Nate Starks didn’t do much to help the Bruins defeat the Cougars of BYU. His 39 yards on 15 carries averaged him just 2.6 yards per carry. Worse yet, was the fact that Starks nearly got half of those yards on one carry. His longest was 15 yards, which means the other 14 carries netted him just 24 yards (1.71 yards per carry).
Starks played the first game of the season as he missed the prior two. Hopefully, he can get it going against #7 Stanford then Arizona at home.
JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, USC (Junior) vs. Stanford
Four catches, 59 yards, zero touchdowns
JuJu Smith-Schuster, what is going on? You have not appeared in two of the three games you have played this season. In week one, Smith-Schuster only caught one pass against Alabama. He then responded well against a weaker team Utah State as he put up a 7-56-2 stat line. Last week, Stanford shut him down again for just four catches and 59 yards.
Smith-Schuster has 11 receptions 99 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
USC (1-2) will now take on #24 Utah then Arizona State both at home.
Freshman Spotlight
J.J. Taylor, RB, Arizona vs. Hawaii
18 carries, 168 yards, one touchdown
The freshman went all kinds of wild over Hawaii for 168 yards and one touchdown. Taylor scored his touchdown when he started right took the handoff to the left and up the sideline as he blew past all Hawaii defenders on his way to a 61-yard score. He finished with 9.3 yards per carry average.
Taylor got the carries when Nick Wilson left the field with an undisclosed injury, and no word yet if Taylor will have to get ready to suit up for the large role again. Another question is, can Taylor handle the type of load to be a full-time back. He stands at just 5-6 and weighs 170 pounds.
Arizona (2-1) will face #9 Washington at home then UCLA on the road.
Nation
Premier Conference Performer
Cooper Rush QB, Central Michigan (Senior) vs. UNLV
20/33 passing, 352 yards, six touchdowns, zero interceptions; three carries, 36 yards.
Cooper Rush didn’t face the same defensive issues as he did last week against Oklahoma State and it showed. Rush finished the day with six touchdowns and 388 combined yards from scrimmage to lay the hammer on UNLV 44-21. Rush connected on touchdowns (30, 13, 29, 26, 31, 42) Mark Chapman and Corey Willis each caught two while Childress and Krill filled in with one.
The game didn’t take off for Central Michigan until the second half. After a 28-21 lead going into the break, the Chippewas shut out the Rebels the rest of the game. Now Central Michigan will take their 3-0 record and face Virginia on the road and then Western Michigan at home.
On the season Cooper Rush has thrown for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Rising Players
Thomas Woodson QB, Akron. (Junior) vs. Marshall
21/32 passing, 379 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions; one rushing touchdown.
Thomas Woodson was on target all game as the Akron Zips beat Marshall Thundering Herd 65-38. Marshall jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, but it turned around for the Zips in the second as they rallied for 34 points to take a 41-21 lead at the half. Akron finished the game outscoring Marshall 24-14.
Woodson wasn’t bothered by anything Marshall threw his way as he didn’t throw an interception, and had a 66 percent completion rate. His five total touchdowns and 379 yards also proved the defense by the Thundering Herd was non-existent. The Akron Zips will now take their 2-1 record and face Appalachian State at home, and then on the road to face Kent State.
Woodson has 894 yards with ten touchdowns and two interceptions on the season.
Donel Pumphrey RB, San Diego State. (Senior) vs. Northern Illinois
23 carries, 220 yards, three touchdowns; one catch.
The San Diego State Aztecs let Donel Pumphrey do whichever he wanted, or maybe it was the Northern Illinois defense that allowed it. Either way, Pumphrey is now coming off three strong performances. Last week against Cal he had 281 yards and three touchdowns. He now has two straight weeks with over 200-yards rushing.
Pumphrey is putting his name on the map with these performances and drawing comparisons to Marshall Faulk as they both went to San Diego State, can catch, and have similar size. Pumphrey’s first touchdown went for 46-yards, his second was for 35-yards, then he busted loose for a 79-yard score.
San Diego State (3-0) will now travel to take on South Alabama and then take on UNLV at home. On the season Donel Pumphrey has 599 yards on 73 carries and seven touchdowns.
I’Tavius Mathers RB, Middle Tennessee (Senior) vs. Bowling Green
27 carries, 153 yards, three touchdowns; four catches, 103 yards, one touchdown
I’Tavius Mathers took matters into his hands and dominated Bowling Green with his running prowess. On 27 carries he gained 153 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also lent his talents to the passing game as he hauled in four receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown. In sum, Mathers totaled 258 yards and four touchdowns.
On his first touchdown Mathers started left right to take the handcuff then burst up the sidelines for 53-yards. His two other rushing touchdowns came within side the five-yard line, but his receiving touchdown went for 78-yards. Mathers went on to win Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week.
Middle Tennessee will now take on Louisiana Tech and then North Texas on the road.
Keevan Lucas, WR, Tulsa (Senior) vs. North Carolina A&T
Four catches, 117 yards, three touchdowns.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane had a 58-0 lead before North Carolina A&T could put up their first score. The game ended in a 58-21 victory, and Keevan Lucas put in a big role on the victory. Lucas caught four balls for 117 yards and three touchdowns.
On his first touchdown Dane Evans spotted him on the right side near the numbers on a great pass and catch for 51 yards and a touchdown. His next touchdown was for 13 yds as Evans spotted Lucas at the back of the end zone and connected with him as Lucas climbed the ladder and came down with the catch. He finished off his solid game with a 52-yard touchdown.
Against North Carolina A&T became Keevan Lucas’ first game with a touchdown, so he made up for the last two games and now has three. He also has 16 receptions and 284 yards to go along with it.
Now Tulsa (2-1) will take on Fresno State in Fresno and then at home against SMU.
Zay Jones, WR, Eastern Carolina (Senior) vs. South Carolina
22 catches, 190 yards, zero touchdowns.
Zay Jones caught 22 passes for 190 yards but did not score a touchdown? Very interesting. It seemed as Senior quarterback Philip Nelson leaned on him quite a bit. Nelson threw many dump off’s to the wide receiver as his long was just 15-yards. The touchdown that Eastern Carolina did score in the 20-15 defeat was a throw by Nelson to Devin Anderson.
The 22 catches set a school record and were one away from setting the Football Sub-Division record, but the team didn’t come away with the victory. On the season, Jones has 39 receptions for 443 yards and one touchdown.
Next up for the Eastern Carolina Pirates (2-1) will be at Virginia Tech then home against UCF.
Falling Players
Johnny Stanton QB UNLVÂ (Junior) vs. Central Michigan
15/41 passes, 151 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions; eight rushes, 19 yards.
Johnny Stanton had a strong test that he needed to pass against the Central Michigan Chippewas but failed to do so for their second straight loss. Cooper Rush was dominating on his way to six touchdown passes which buried the UNLV Rebels in a deep hole.
Stanton did lead the Rebels did have a 21-14 lead more than halfway through the second quarter when the junior quarterback hit Darren Woods Jr. for a 13-yard touchdown.  It was a great pass to the left pylon where Woods just had to fall in the end zone for the score. Stanton didn’t help himself with two interceptions however.
Stanton is having a poor season being the UNLV quarterback. He has only thrown for 534 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. He has shown his ability to run with the ball as he has rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown.
UNLV (1-2) will now take on Idaho and then Fresno State for back-to-back home games and try to get back to their winning ways after losing two straight.
D’Angelo Brewer, RB, Tulsa (Junior) vs. North Carolina A&T
14 rushes. 60 yards, zero touchdowns.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane was victorious over North Carolina A&T 58-21, so how is that D’Angelo Brewer just rushed for 60-yards on 14 carries and contributed nothing to the scoreboard? Even worse, he had a run of 26 yards, meaning the other 13 carries netted him just 34 yards for 2.61 yards per catch
Those numbers are similar to what he put up against Ohio State a far more superior team two weeks ago, and not the stat line he should have as he did against San Jose State in week one. Against the Spartans he rushed for 164 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns.
On the season he has 282 yards on 51 carries and three touchdowns
He will try to get back to his week one number’s as Tulsa (2-1) faces Fresno State on the road and then SMU at home.
Isaiah Johnson WR, Houston (Sophomore) vs. Cincinnati
One catch, 32 yards, zero touchdowns
Greg Ward throws for 326 yards and Johnson only garners 32 yards on one catch. The sophomore needs to develop more and isn’t performing the way many thought he would. On the season, he has three receptions 92 yards and zero touchdowns.
Houston Cougars (3-0) will now play Texas State on the road and then at home versus Connecticut.
Freshman Spotlight
Brandon Mcllwain QB, South Carolina vs. Eastern Carolina
16/28 passing, for 195 yards, zero touchdowns, zero interceptions; nine carries, 34 yards, two touchdowns.
Brandon Mcllwain played the short game upon facing the Eastern Carolina Pirates and came away with the victory. He was on point with 57 percent of his attempts and finished with 195 yards. Most of his damage came with his feet however as ran for 34 yards and two touchdowns, making the difference in the game.
Next up for the South Carolina Gamecocks (2-1) will be on the road to Kentucky then home against #10 Texas A&M.
