DLF’s Weekly Impact Events

The NFL Draft and a large number of dynasty rookie drafts have wrapped up and we are nearing the long stretch of the off-season until training camps begin in late summer. This will be the time when many in your leagues “take a break,” which is just another advantage for you dynasty players. Here’s the top news from the past week in the NFL.

Marlon Brown, WR FA

The Baltimore Ravens waived/injured wide receiver Marlon Brown, who failed his physical. Brown was once viewed as a promising dynasty prospect after a surprising rookie season for the Ravens two years ago. Since then, Brown has been almost invisible despite a wide open depth chart due to injuries. I don’t expect Brown to catch on with another team and he obviously has no dynasty value.

Quinshad Davis, WR DET

The Lions have signed undrafted free agent Quinshad Davis, formerly of North Carolina. Davis was once a hot name in devy leagues and he flourished for the Tar Heels. Near the end of his junior season, he suffered an injury that derailed his career. The Lions were expected to add a wideout in the draft, but instead settled for signing the likes of Davis and former Baylor receiver Jay Lee. Davis is a longshot to stick with the team.

CJ Anderson, RB DEN

While it may seem as if Broncos’ running back CJ Anderson is on the outs in Denver, a local beat writer expects him to remain the team’s lead back. Most of the signs are not in Anderson’s favor. First, the team chose to tender him at the lowest possible level, which preceded the Miami Dolphins signing Anderson to a offer sheet. Of course, the Broncos ultimately matched the offer, locking Anderson in to a four-year deal with Denver. The Broncos later re-signed Ronnie Hillman and drafted Devontae Booker. All of this should tell us the team doesn’t trust Anderson to be their top back going forward.

Paul Perkins, RB NYG

Following the poor performance of the New York Giants running game in 2015, the addition of rookie Paul Perkins in last month’s draft seemed to be the perfect fit. Both Andre Williams and Rashad Jennings showed us their true colors in 2015 and free agent signing Shane Vereen was underused and disappointing. Surprisingly though, longtime Giants beat writer Ralph Vacchiano expects Perkins to play only a small role while Jennings is the workhorse back. This would be a hit to the dynasty players selecting Perkins in the first round of rookie drafts expecting instant production, but this could be enough to move him down a tier in rookie rankings.

Melvin Gordon, RB SD

Possibly the biggest news of the week is actually months old, but just surfaced this week. Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, who struggled as a rookie, underwent microfracture surgery on his knee back in January. Gordon will reportedly be ready for Chargers’ training camp, but this has to be a concern for a player who already gave us plenty of reasons to worry. With Gordon’s knee clearly an issue, we have even more reasons to buy veteran back Danny Woodhead, last season’s PPR RB3.

Julian Edelman, WR NE

Another player who recently went under the knife was Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who needed a second surgery on his foot. Edelman too is expected to be ready for training camp, but considering this surgery came as a result of a setback, or re-injury, there is reason for concern about Edelman’s future. His value takes a slight hit, but he was already being valued at a lower level than his production should demand.

DeSean Jackson, WR WAS

Following the selection of Josh Doctson in the first round, many were connecting the dots and assuming the Redskins could release one of their high profile veteran receivers, DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. The duo now is expected to stay, based on a beat writer’s report. There is still plenty of time and Doctson is viewed as one of the most NFL ready receivers in the class, so I still wouldn’t be surprised if Garcon is bounced from DC.

Duke Williams, WR LA

The Los Angeles Rams added yet another undrafted free agent receiver, signing former Auburn Tiger Duke Williams. Just over a year ago, Williams looked like a star in the making, but his off-field issues eventually got him booted from Auburn, both the football team and the school, and killed his draft stock. Considering all of the knocks against Williams, and now a very crowded depth chart with the Rams, I’m not willing to put him on my dynasty roster.
