Dynasty Stock Market: Team By Team Rankings

Ryan McDowell

Over the past couple of years, I periodically take part in a dynasty ranking exercise that is different than my typical ranking process.  This rankings exercise is two-fold. First, I rank each dynasty relevant player in comparison to other players on their own NFL teams. After that is complete, I then rank all teams based on total dynasty value. This began as a time filler when my son was in the hospital, but I actually found it was a very rewarding experience as a dynasty player and writer. It forced me to look at players differently than my normal positional rankings process. Also, it shed some light on some very good and not so good team situations. Many of these might be obvious, but actually going through this on a team-by-team basis made things clear.

As I mentioned, the process was basically to rank all players on their teams and then rank all 32 NFL teams. There was nothing scientific about this, but rather a “from the guy” approach to the activity. I decided it was time for another installment since it’s been a few months, but this time I wanted to try something different. Rather than relying my own opinion, I went to the data, our recently collected ADP data to be exact. Using the ADP data, I found the value of each NFL team’s top ranked quarterback, running back, two wide receivers, tight end and one “flex,” which was most often a second running back or third receiver. I then found the sum of these six players’ ADP and used that number to rank each team. Just like in golf, the lower score, the better.

Note: Any player who went undrafted was assigned an ADP of 241.

This is no surprise. This 49er team needs a major infusion of offensive talent. Running back Carlos Hyde is really the only player with any long-term dynasty value.

#31 Baltimore

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-18-33

The Ravens have some players with promise, like Kenneth Dixon and Breshad Perriman, but they have disappointed. Instead, veterans who most dynasty owners gave up on, Mike Wallace and Dennis Pitta, have helped carry this team in 2016.

#30 Los Angeles

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-19-01

The Rams have one of the top talents in the league in Todd Gurley, but he’s surrounded by average players and below average coaches.

#29 Buffalo

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-19-21

The Bills clearly have some major questions at the pass-catcher spots and that has to be high on their off-season to-do list. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor has had another strong year, but continues to be overlooked and undervalued in dynasty leagues.

#28 New York Jets

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-22-31

With veteran Eric Decker out for the season and Brandon Marshall struggling, young receiver Quincy Enunwa has been a nice find. While Matt Forte and Bilal Powell have played well, this team must add some youth.

#27 New York Giants

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-22-45

The Giants have a pair of valuable young receivers and while they continue to try and fix the running game, nothing has really been successful. This is one of many teams that could target a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft.

#26 Houston

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-23-04

The Texans are among the most frustrating teams in the league this season. Despite toting out one of the league’s best receivers in DeAndre Hopkins and running backs with Lamar Miller, the offense has been a major disappointment, largely due to the play of quarterback Brock Osweiler.

#25 Arizona

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-23-14

With several impact fantasy players, I was very surprised to see the Cardinals so low on this list. It seems that the trio of talented wide receivers, along with JJ Nelson, somewhat cancel each other out as dynasty owners aren’t sure how to rank these pass-catchers.

#24 Philadelphia

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-23-38

Despite an offense built around young players, which would typically greatly appeal to dynasty players, the Eagles come in somewhat low on the list. Receivers Jordan Matthews and Dorial Green-Beckham have both been valued as highly as the second round of startup drafts, but they’ve failed to establish themselves as fantasy difference makers.

#23 Minnesota

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-25-58

The Vikings started the season 5-0, but have hit a cold streak. Other than Stefon Diggs and the rejuvenated tight end Kyle Rudolph, none of these players have helped fantasy owners this season. Little-used rookie receiver Laquon Treadwell might be the top “buy low” target in dynasty leagues right now.

#22 Kansas City

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-26-13

This team has gone through many changes even since the season started with Spencer Ware looking like the back of the future and rookie Tyreek Hill earning a larger role each week. Veteran Jamaal Charles has missed most of the season with an injury and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is enduring one of the worst seasons of his career.

#21 Chicago

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-26-25

With wide receiver Alshon Jeffery disappointing Bears fans and dynasty owners, I’m surprised the Bears are not even lower on this list. Once he bails Chicago via free agency, they could be near the bottom.

#20 Cleveland

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-26-44

The Browns has been a train wreck on the field, but a breakout season from receiver Terrelle Pryor and the upside of rookie Corey Coleman has them near the middle of this list.

#19 Dallas

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-26-58

Aided by the top two candidates for Rookie of the Year, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys are looking much better in this exercise than they might’ve during the pre-season. I expect the Cowboys to add a receiver through the draft, making the offense even more dangerous.

#18 Jacksonville

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-27-15

With Blake Bortles, TJ Yeldon and Allen Hurns looking like breakout stars a year ago, the Jags would’ve been a top ten team easily. Instead, all three have lost dynasty value as they’ve disappointed this year.

#17 Tampa Bay

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-27-28

The combination of Jameis Winston and Mike Evans gives the Tampa Bay Bucs a good starting point, but they have little of value beyond that, thanks to Doug Martin’s injury-plagued season. Charles Sims and Vincent Jackson, who went undrafted, have been disappointments this year.

#16 Miami

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-27-46

Miami has run hot and cold all season and have cracked the top half of teams in this ranking after running back Jay Ajayi moved from RB48 to RB8 in one month. Although receivers DeVante Parker and Jarvis Landry have not lived up to expectations, they both remain very valuable, based on our latest data.

#15 Denver

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-37-41

They might be the reigning Super Bowl champions, but that clearly doesn’t equate to dynasty value. You can make an argument all of these players are losing dynasty value based on the first half of the season.

#14 New England

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-38-03

Future Hall of Famer Tom Brady has shown over and over that he doesn’t have to be surrounded by superstars to win games and this is another example of that. Other than superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski, the rest of this crew is largely just spare parts other NFL teams gave up on.

#13 Tennessee

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-38-14

The Titans are one of the hottest teams in the league and dynasty owners are desperate to get their hands on quarterback Marcus Mariota. He is certain to be much higher in our next installment of dynasty ADP. Also of note here is that despite another huge season from veteran DeMarco Murray, dynasty owners prefer rookie Derrick Henry by more than a full round.

#12 Carolina

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-38-26

With a top five player at both quarterback and tight end, the Panthers are just outside the top ten team. Second-year receiver Devin Funchess is seeing his value fade during another underwhelming year.

#11 Washington

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-38-41

This ranking for Washington is not what it appears. Since our ADP data was collected, running back Matt Jones has been benched and has almost no value. Also, one of the team’s top valued players is rookie receiver Josh Doctson who has barely even played.

#10 Oakland

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-40-49

The Raiders kick off the top ten, thanks to the rapid value gain of quarterback Derek Carr, along with another strong season from Michael Crabtree and the rise to the elite tier for second-year man Amari Cooper.

#9 Indianapolis

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-41-01

The Colts sport one of the top quarterbacks in the game and a pair of play-making receivers. Veteran running back Frank Gore just continues to produce, but the team will have to find a replacement very soon. Receiver Phillip Dorsett is looking like a bust.

#8 Green Bay

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-41-16

In the past when working through this activity, the Packers have been a mainstay in the top three, but fading play values has the entire team struggling. Aaron Rodgers is still a high end quarterback, but injured running back Eddie Lacy might be done in Green Bay and Randall Cobb has clearly lost a step. Davante Adams and his bounceback season is a bright spot and despite what the ADP says, he might be the most valuable Packer in dynasty leagues.

#7 Detroit

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-41-27

The Lions lost all-everything wide receiver Calvin Johnson after his early retirement, but their individual players have maintained value very well. Running back Theo Riddick is proving last season was no fluke and pass-catchers Golden Tate and Eric Ebron have been a hot streak in the past month.

#6 Pittsburgh

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-41-43

Not that long ago, wide receiver Martavis Bryant was quickly moving toward the top 20 of dynasty drafts, and then he was suspended for the entire 2016 season. Even with this, he has still been a top 100 valued player, but his ADP has hurt the Steelers in comparison to others. Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown continue to be elite options at their respective positions.

#5 San Diego

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-44-01

The Chargers key players have changed quite a bit since last year. Second year running back Melvin Gordon is enjoying a breakout year as is receiver Tyrell Williams. Rookie tight end Hunter Henry is one of the rare first-year producers at his position.

#4 Atlanta

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-44-16

The Falcons have gained a ton of value as a team with running back Tevin Coleman putting up some major games in between injuries and the team upgrading their WR2 spot with former Bengal Mohamed Sanu.

#3 Cincinnati

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-44-36

Aided by high end options at wide receiver and tight end, the Bengals dynasty value has exceeded the on-field success this season. Running back duo Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill have cancelled out each other and have nearly matching ADPs.

#2 Seattle

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-44-53

The Seahawks are the only team to have all six of their players drafted within the top 100, despite no player going in the top 40. Just as they did last season, Seattle seems to really be heating up as the season passes the halfway point.

#1 New Orleans

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-11-45-02

Already flush with valuable dynasty players, the Saints found another top 30 player in the NFL Draft as Michael Thomas has been a quick riser. His fellow wide receiver Willie Snead has also been gaining value, though Coby Fleener has flopped.
