DLF’s Weekly Impact Events

We’re early in the season and every fantasy team is still in contention, but things move fast in the NFL. Here’s what you need to know for week four of the 2016 season.

Hunter Henry, TE SD

The Chargers rookie tight end Hunter Henry has been somewhat quietly contributing with veteran Antonio Gates out of action and on Thursday Night Football in prime time, the former Arkansas Razorback loudly announced his presence as a dynasty commodity. Henry led the Chargers with 83 yards on six catches and caught the first touchdown of the game as San Diego defeated division rival Denver. Henry looked even more dominant than his statline would lead you to believe. He’s now scored in three straight games and is not letting the typical slow start for rookie tight ends bog him down. If this keeps up, it will be hard to keep Henry out of the top five tight ends in dynasty rankings.

Eric Decker, WR NYJ

After battling a shoulder injury for the past couple of weeks, the Jets have placed veteran wide receiver Eric Decker on the injured reserve list. He’ll undergo season-ending surgery and is expected to need up to eight months to recover. Decker is perpetually underrated and he’ll be 30 years old before he plays another down, so his value should only decline from here. He makes a nice buy and stash for dynasty teams expecting to compete in 2017.

Jordan Reed, TE WAS

In some surprise news early this week, we learned that Redskins tight end Jordan Reed had suffered a concussion. This is a surprise since he showed no signs of a head injury in last week’s game, but certainly not surprising based on Reed’s lengthy and unfortunate history of head injuries. Depending on the severity of this latest blow to the head, Reed could miss multiple weeks as he recovers and some have even suggested he should consider retirement. For now, I’m keeping Reed at his lofty rank among my second tier of tight ends, but realizing the bottom could fall out at any time due to these injuries.

Alshon Jeffery, WR CHI

The struggle is real for Bears wideout Alshon Jeffery and according the quarterback Brian Hoyer, it may not be changing anytime soon. When asked about Jeffery’s smaller than expected role this season, Hoyer explained that he had no intentions of forcing the ball to the team’s star receiver. Jeffery is just not getting the looks, only leading the team in targets in one game this season. His dynasty value remains fairly steady, considering the lack of production and there is a strong chance Jeffery is suiting up for a new team come 2017.

Jordan Cameron, TE MIA

Another tight end dealing with a severe concussion is Miami’s Jordan Cameron, who has already missed a pair of games and is not expected to suit up this weekend. According to Dolphins beat reporters, Cameron is considering his future in football after suffering his fourth head injury in recent seasons. Cameron was not playing well before the injury and is no longer worthy of a roster spot in dynasty leagues.

Karlos Williams, RB PIT

After completing his four-game suspension, running back Karlos Williams signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. There were earlier reports that Williams would be re-signing with the Buffalo Bills, but they ultimately cancelled his visit with the team. Williams has very little dynasty value but could conceivably be the backup next season if veteran DeAngelo Williams retires or moves on.

Colin Kaepernick, QB SF

The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Colin Kaepernick have agreed to a restructured contract which has paved the way for Kaepernick to replace struggling Blaine Gabbert as the starter. The previous deal was guaranteed for injury only so the coaching staff reportedly was hesitant to use him. For now, Kap will have a chance to regain some of the dynasty value that disappeared when he lost the job this past off-season.

Justin Forsett, RB DET

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran running back Justin Forsett, who was recently let go by the Baltimore Ravens. With Ameer Abdullah done for the year and rookie power back Dwayne Washington banged up, the Lions were desperate for some depth. Forsett is expected to play behind both Washington and Theo Riddick, which both are healthy.

Charles Sims, RB TB

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed running back Charles Sims on the injured reserve list, likely ending his season. When starter Doug Martin went down early in the season with an ankle injury, the expectation was that Sims could be a major factor for fantasy teams, but he never really got going. Sims lost quite a bit of value, not only because of this season-ending injury, but because of his average play on the field when he got a chance at the spotlight. The Bucs will roll with Jacquizz Rodgers until Martin is fully healthy.
